Basi cal l y, the sound source of a pi ezoel ectri c sound
component i s a pi ezoel ectri c di aphragm. A pi ezoel ectri c
di aphragm consi sts of a pi ezoel ectri c cerami c pl ate
whi ch has el ectrodes on both si des and a metal pl ate
(brass or stai nl ess steel , etc.).
A pi ezoel ectri c cerami c pl ate i s attached to a metal pl ate
wi th adhesi ves. Fi g. 2 shows the osci l l ati ng system of a
pi ezoel ectri c di aphragm.
Appl yi ng D.C. vol tage between el ectrodes of a
pi ezoel ectri c di aphragm causes mechani cal di storti on
due to the pi ezoel ectri c effect. For a mi sshaped
pi ezoel ectri c el ement, the di storti on of the pi ezoel ectri c
el ement expands i n a radi al di recti on. And the
pi ezoel ectri c di aphragm bends toward the di recti on
shown i n Fi g.2 (a). The metal pl ate bonded to the
pi ezoel ectri c el ement does not expand. Conversel y,
when the pi ezoel ectri c el ement shri nks, the pi ezoel ectri c
di aphragm bends i n the di recti on shown i n Fi g.2 (b).
Thus, when AC vol tage i s appl i ed across el ectrodes, the
bendi ng shown i n Fi g.2 (a) and Fi g.2 (b) i s repeated as
shown i n Fi g.2 (c), produci ng sound waves i n the ai r.

A l ead wi re i s needed to appl y vol tage to the
pi ezoel ectri c di aphragm. When usi ng a sol deri ng i ron,
the opti mum temperature for sol deri ng a l ead wi re to a
metal pl ate i s 300C for a few seconds and the same
temperature for the cerami c el ectrode for 0.5 second or
l ess. The l ead wi re shoul d be as fi ne as possi bl e, as i t
works as a l oad restri cti ng osci l l ati on of the pi ezoel ectri c
di aphragm (Exampl e: AWG32).
2. Design Procedures
I n general , man's audi bl e frequency range i s about 20
Hz to 20kHz. Frequency ranges of 2kHz to 4kHz are
most easi l y heard. For thi s reason, most pi ezoel ectri c
sound components are used i n thi s frequency range, and
the resonant frequency (f0) i s general l y sel ected i n the
same range too. As shown i n Fi g. 3, the resonant
frequency depends on methods used to support the
pi ezoel ectri c di aphragm. I f pi ezoel ectri c di aphragms are
of the same shape, thei r val ues wi l l become smal l er i n
the order of (a), (b) and (c). I n general , the pi ezoel ectri c
di aphragm i s i nstal l ed i n a cavi ty to produce hi gh sound
pressure (Fi g. 4). The resonant frequency (fcav) of the
cavi ty i n Fi g. 4 i s obtai ned from Formul a (1)
(Hel mhol tz's Formul a). Si nce the pi ezoel ectri c
di aphragm and cavi ty have proper resonant frequenci es,
(f0) and (fcav) respecti vel y, sound pressure i n speci fi c
frequenci es can be i ncreased and a speci fi c bandwi dth
can be provi ded by control l i ng both posi ti ons.

Notice (Handling) In Using Self Drive Method
1) When the pi ezoel ectri c buzzer i s set to produce
i ntermi ttent sounds, sound may be heard
conti nuousl y even when the sel f dri ve ci rcui t i s
turned ON /OFF at the "X" poi nt shown i n Fi g. 9.
Thi s i s because of the fai l ure of turni ng off the
feedback vol tage.
2) Bui l d a ci rcui t of the pi ezoel ectri c sounder exactl y as
per the recommended ci rcui t shown i n the catal og. hfe
of the transi stor and ci rcui t constants are desi gned to
ensure stabl e osci l l ati on of the pi ezoel ectri c sounder.
3) Desi gn swi tchi ng whi ch ensures di rect power
swi tchi ng.
4) The sel f dri ve ci rcui t i s al ready contai ned i n the
pi ezoel ectri c buzzer. So there i s no need to prepare
another ci rcui t to dri ve the pi ezoel ectri c buzzer.
5) Rated vol tage (3.0 to 20Vdc) must be mai ntai ned.
Products whi ch can operate wi th vol tage hi gher than
20Vdc are al so avai l abl e.
6) Do not pl ace resi stors i n seri es wi th the power source,
as thi s may cause abnormal osci l l ati on. I f a resi stor i s
essenti al to adjust sound pressure, pl ace a capaci tor
(about 1F) i n paral l el wi th the pi ezo buzzer.
7) Do not cl ose the sound emmi tti ng hol e on the front

4. To Raise Up Sound Pressure Level (S.P.L.)
I t i s probabl e that the S.P.L. of Pi ezoel ectri c sound
components i s l arger as the i nput vol tage i s l arger
bacause Pi ezoel ectri c sound components are dri ven by
vol tage. The rel ati onshi p between S.P.L. and the i nput
vol tage i s basi cal l y shown i n the fol l owi ng fomul a:
S.P.L. after i ncreased i nput vol tage(dB)=
previ ous S.P.L.+20Log(V2/V1)
V1: previ ous i nput vol tage
V2: i ncreased i nput vol tage
Therefore, S.P.L. i s theoreti cal l y getti ng 6dB l arger as
the i nput vol tage i s twi ce l arger.
Fi g. 10 represents S.P.L. - frequency characteri sti cs for
PKLCS1212E4001-R1 i n whi ch the i nput vol tage i s
vari ed. We can see that S.P.L. i s approxi matel y getti ng
6dB l arger as the i nput vol tage i s twi ce l arger.
