Case Analysis
Controls to Keep Employees from Temptation

1. Statement of the Problem
The problem is Simon Worldwide Inc.s improper control of the
distribution of the winning game pieces which led to money fraud by Mr,
Jacobson who is the head of security and the one whom the winning game
pieces were entrusted to.

2. Facts of the Case
The problem arose because of the following factors:
Mc Donalds Corporation hired Simon Worldwide Inc.to run their
product promotions through rare game winning pieces that can be
valued at $1 million each.
Simon Worldwide Inc. handled the printing and distribution of all
game pieces, placing the winning ones in the hands of its head of
security, Jerome P. Jacobson, a 58-yr-old former police officer.
Mr. Jacobson was supposed to make certain that the winning pieces
entered the distribution system in a random and fair way but it turned
out that he diverted those pieces to friends and acquaintances.

3. Alternative Courses of Action
After the arrest of Mr. Jacobson and seven others, Simon Worldwide
Inc. could either:
1. Reform their way of controlling such promotions by not placing a
person in an awkward position of physically controlling winning
tickets, instead, let a computer program generate the winning
tickets and randomly shuffles them among the others.
2. Take responsibility of their employees action and rerun such
promotions, shouldering all the agreed expenses so that their
companys name will not be totally in bad shape and at the same
time to prove to McDonalds that they can still be trusted because
they have taken appropriate action of the fraud that happened.
3. Let Mr. Jacobson take responsibility and own all the fault of the
crime and come out clean by making the company look like a
victim also of the said fraud.

4. Recommendation
If I am the manager of the Simon Worldwide Inc., I honestly dont
know what to do. I would like to choose the second course of action which is
to take responsibility of the employees action and rerun such promotions, but
I doubt if the company will allow losing millions of expenses just to reinforce
the companys image. So, I will chose the third course of action which is to let
Mr. Jacobson take responsibility and let him own all the fault of the crime and
come out clean by making the company look like a victim also of the said
fraud. But if I am the owner of Simon Worldwide Inc., I will really chose the
second course of action.

Case Analysis II
Saber Union Insurance

1. Statement of the Problem
The problem in the Saber Union Insurances Case is the time
management of communication which rose to the misunderstanding of the
manager (Ralph Ramos) and his valued employee (Angela Zanoni).

2. Facts of the Case
Since Angela started telecommuting and was unaware of a change in
the organization system, she missed an important deadline.
The manager and Angela decided to meet and discuss about the issue
but Angela again stresses that because shes working from home, she
isnt given the same consideration as other employees.
Since Angela felt that she is not being treated fairly, she intentionally
missed another deadline and is job hunting so she can readily resign
anytime.

3. Alternative Course of Action
Since the telecommunication issue becomes heated, Ralph tries to
diffuse the situation. He can either try to find a solution to their dilemma by
making Angela feel that she is a valued employee and Ralph will contact her
daily from home via telephone, or, if both of them are dissatisfied of the
courses of action, they will revisit the possibility of Angelas resignation.

4. Recommendation
In this case, the issue is resolved through the managers way of
diffusing the tension. He privately expresses his views and made Angela feel
needed and valued by listening to her. He established clear goals and
expectations which are agreed by both parties, thus, saving both the
organization and the valued employee.
If I were the manager, I know that I am partly to be blamed for the
telecommuting issue but having tried to resolve the issue by discussing it with
the other party doesnt give her the right to intentionally miss a deadline and
endanger the organization. I would have forced her to resign because of her
attitude in dealing this kind of situation at work. But on second thought,
considering how Ralph tried harder to keep Angela in her position only means
that she is a gem in the organization whose talents are very much needed, so I
think I would be forced to do the same thing for the sake of the organization
and maybe try to polish my patience in dealing with other peoples attitudes.
