Superposition (Fourier Transform II)

Circuits II

Within the Superposition lab we had to build a RCL circuit which has a variable capacitance. The
variable capacitor is to fine tune the circuit so that the output will allow only the main harmonic that
makes up the input frequency. By turning the frequency up or down will allow some of the harmonics to
pass through the filter. When changing the frequency, the capacitance also needs to be tuned. If the
circuit is not in tune you will see the harmonics that make up the input frequency.

For step 1, we had a square wave as an input while the output

displayed a sine wave. All tuned values produced a clean sine
wave. When the circuit was out of tune, the output displayed a
sine wav with a cut edge. The cut edge is where the frequency
is changing to a different cycles per second.
For step 2, we had a triangle wave as an input while the output
ejected from it was of a sine wave. The output was also out of
phase with the input. When changing the capacitance or
frequency will result in the output as well changing frequency.
The amplitude on the output as well changed.

For step 3, we had a sine wave as an input while the output

ejected from it was still a sine wave. The output was also out of
phase with the input. When changing the capacitance or
frequency will result in the output as well changing frequency.
The amplitude on the output as well changed.

When both the input is a 1 KHz square wave and when the capacitor has a value of 1.01 uF, the output
will then have a 5 KHz sine wave. To get an output of 3 KHz you would need to tune the capacitor to
2.81 uF as long as the input frequency is still set to 1 KHz.
