A REVIVAL
In every part of the land, light was given 1.
upon the second angels message, and the cry
melted the hearts of thousands. It went from
city to city, and from village to village, until
the waiting people of God were fully aroused.
In many churches the message was not permit-
ted to be given, and a large company who had
the living testimony left these fallen churches.
A mighty work was accomplished by the mid-
night cry. Te message was heart-searching,
leading the believers to seek a living experience
for themselves. Tey knew that they could not
lean upon one another. . . .
A spirit of solemn and earnest prayer was
everywhere felt by the saints. A holy solemnity
was resting upon them. Angels were watching
with the deepest interest the eect of the mes-
sage, and were elevating those who received
it, and drawing them from earthly things to
obtain large supplies from salvations fountain.
Gods people were then accepted of Him. Je-
sus looked upon them with pleasure, for His
image was reected in them. Tey had made
a full sacrice, an entire consecration, and ex-
pected to be changed to immortality. But they
were destined again to be sadly disappointed.

THE CATALYST OF PROPHECY
In the year 1840 another remarkable 18.
fulllment of prophecy excited widespread in-
terest. two years before, Josiah Litch, one of
the leading ministers preaching the second ad-
vent, published an exposition of Revelation 9,
predicting the fall of the Ottoman Empire. Ac-
cording to his calculations, this power was to
be overthrown in A.D. 1840, sometime in the
month of August; and only a few days previ-
ous to its accomplishment he wrote: Allowing
the rst period, 150 years, to have been exactly
fullled before Deacozes ascended the throne
by permission of the Turks, and that the 391
years, fteen days, commenced at the close of
the rst period, it will end on the 11th of Au-
gust, 1840, when the Ottoman power in Con-
stantinople may be expected to be broken. And
this, I believe, will be found to be the case.
At the very time specied, Turkey, through
her ambassadors, accepted the protection of the
allied powers of Europe, and thus placed her-
self under the control of Christian nations. Te
event exactly fullled the prediction. When it
became known, multitudes were convinced of
the correctness of the principles of prophetic
interpretation adopted by Miller and his as-
sociates, and a wonderful impetus was given
to the advent movement. Men of learning and
position united with Miller, both in preaching
and in publishing his views, and from 1840
to 1844 the work rapidly extended. Te Great
Controversy, 334335.
THE WISE
As we near the close of this worlds histo- 19.
ry, the prophecies recorded by Daniel demand
our special attention, as they relate to the very
time in which we are living. With them should
be linked the teachings of the last book of the
New Testament Scriptures. Satan has led many
to believe that the prophetic portions of the
writings of Daniel and of John the revelator
cannot be understood. But the promise is plain
that special blessing will accompany the study
of these prophecies. Te wise shall understand
(verse 10), was spoken of the visions of Daniel
that were to be unsealed in the latter days; and
of the revelation that Christ gave to His ser-

9, predizendo a queda do Imprio Otomano.
osto; e poucos dias apenas antes do seu cum-
primento escreveu: Admitindo que o primeiro
perodo, 150 anos, se cumpriu exatamente an-
ts. O acontecimento cumpriu exatamente a
predio.
rapidamente. O Grande Conito, 334-335.
AS SBIAS
Ao nos aproximarmos do m da histria 19.

iel demandam a nossa especial ateno, visto
relacionarem-se com o prprio tempo em que
estamos vivendo. Com elas devem-se ligar os
ensinos do ltimo livro das Escrituras do Novo
Testamento.

another have occupied their allotted time and
place, unconsciously witnessing to the truth of
which they themselves knew not the meaning,
speaks to us. To every nation and to every in-
dividual of today God has assigned a place in

all which is yet to come will be fullled in its
order. Education, 178.

prophecy in the United States have presented
this testimony to the world. In the events now
taking place is seen a rapid advance toward
the fulllment of the prediction. With Protes-

authority for Sunday-keeping, and the same
lack of scriptural evidence, as with the papist
leaders who fabricated miracles to supply the

In short, that contemporary map of 142.
shame would be the graphic expression of the
atrocity we have come to describe so blandly
as the division of the world into North and
South, which is to say, in plainer terms, the
division of nations, and of populations within
nations, into rich and poor. . . .
It is just such a map of shame that Pope
John Paul does hold up to the world in his
moral assessment of the geopolitical arrange-
ments that are setting up our future for us. ...
On the modern map of world shame that
is the subject of so much of John Pauls atten-
tion, North and South do not gure as precise
geographical terms. Instead, they are global
frontiers where wealth and poverty divide not
only nations, but societies within nations. ...
Whether it is applied in the connes of the
United States, or in the world at large, John
Pauls moral assessment of North and South is
