A Message From Tom

I hope this message finds everyone enjoying
the long weekend. As you can see by looking
at our calendar of events, this week is full of
great SBA events. I particularly want to take a
second to write about the Town Hall and Fall
Ball.
Our first Town Hall will be held on Tuesday
from 5:00 7:00pm in the First Floor Function
Room. The SBA Student Concerns Committee
has done a fantastic job of bringing together
various deans and administrators of the law
school. This is your opportunity to raise any
and all issues or concerns that you have with
the law school. From an SBA point-of-view,
issues raised by the student body at the Town
Hall will be the ones that we can focus on
addressing. Thus, if you want to see
something addressed, make sure your voice is
heard.
In regard to Fall Ball, which will begin Friday
at 8:00pm at the W, I simply want to reiterate
the importance of this event going well. Not
only do we owe it to our Social Committee,
who has done an outstanding job planning the
event, but we also owe it to ourselves as a law
school community. How we behave at official
law school events directly affects our standing
and reputation within and without the legal
community. Accordingly, lets all work
together to make sure that Friday night is

! The first Town Hall meeting of the year will take place on Tuesday from 5-7pm in the first
floor function room. This meeting will be a place for students to ask the deans and
administrators any law school related questions. Food and drinks will be served.
! BBA event on Wednesday: Getting hired as a prosecutor or public defender
o Interested as being hired as an ADA, AAG, AUSA, or public defender? Hear from the
BBAs experienced panel about the hiring process, what the offices are looking for,
strategies for getting hired, and how candidates can prepare themselves professionally
and financially.

! OFFICE HOURS with Tom: Tuesday @ 12:00-1:00pm & Thursday @ 6:30 7:30pm
! SBA External Affairs Committee will be tabling on Thursday from 10am-3pm for breast cancer
awareness. The purpose of this table is to donate at least one dollar to breast cancer awareness.
Each person who donates gets to dedicate their donation or may write a personal story about
how breast cancer affects them by writing on a sheet, which will be displayed later on.
! FALL BALL is on Friday at 8pm at the W Hotel

! The SBA is looking for interested 1Ls to join the Appropriations Committee. The
Appropriations Committee works with student clubs and organizations to review budget
requests and is instrumental in allotting funds for activities and events held at the law school.
Meetings are held on the second Monday of the month. Email Suzanne Graziano at
sgraziano@suffolk.edu if you are interested.
! This is the last week to submit your SBA logo entry! The winner will receive a $50 Boston

Tip of the week
Get Organized!
The fall semester is about
halfway through,
midterms are coming up,
and the information is
piling up. Now is a great
time to do your best to get
all of your notes, papers,
etc., organized. One way
to do this is to start
outlining. While you are
outlining you will also be
able to see if there is a part
of the course you may be
struggling with and you
can ask your professor
about it now rather than at
the end of the semester.

We are very pleased with the outcome of how SBA Executive
Committee funding is being invested this year. Thanks to a
massive team effort of all SBA members, we were able to invest

Callie Grossman, a 2L and a graduate of Florida State University, is the SBA
Chief of Operations. As Chief of Operations, Callies primary responsibilities
are to serve as the SBAs official record keeper and as chair of the elections
committee.

Did you have an internship/job over the summer and if so what did you most enjoy
about it?
This past summer I was a judicial intern at the Suffolk County Juvenile Court to
the Honorable Stephen M. Limon. I assisted Judge Limon, along with other
Juvenile Judges in drafting decisions and researching applicable law. Each day
we had the opportunity to sit in the courtroom, and listen to motions or trials.
The judges allowed us to participate in side bar conversations and spoke to us
about how they came to their decisions after they decided. It was an incredible
experience and each day I never knew what I would see in court.

What are you most looking forward to this school year, both personally and in your SBA role?
Personally, this year I'm looking forward to narrowing down my list of what field of law Im
most interested in.
As for the SBA, I am looking forward to working closely with the BOG and the Executive Board to
make SULS the best school it can be.

Any tips for the new 1Ls?
Do you. Its as simple as that.

Callies Favorites:

Favorite place to study: On campus I love studying on the 5
th
floor. The view of the city takes my
breath away every time.
Off Campus I cheat on Suffolk and channel my inner Elle Woods and study at Harvard

Favorite study break: I go to the gym to relieve stress. After I do that, I am able to return to my
work with a better attitude, high energy and a clear mind.

Favorite part of Suffolk Law: I am able to make personal connections with so many students. I
came from an undergrad of 40,000 students. It was nearly impossible to be able to make the
connections that I have made at Suffolk. Each student at Suffolk Law has an incredible story and I
am so grateful to have met such interesting people.

Favorite coffee shop near school: Starbucks near Government Center

Favorite movie: Bridesmaids. Gets me every time - I can literally quote the movie from start to
finish.

Callie Grossman | SBA Chief of Operations


Neil Lindquist, a 2L and a graduate of Boston College, is the SBA Chief of Staff. As Chief of Staff,
Neils primary responsibilities are to manage the section reps and assist the president and vice
president to ensure that the SBA runs smoothly.

Do you currently have an internship/job and if so what do you most enjoy about it?
I'm currently interning for an immigration/criminal firm. It's been a great opportunity to help
families and individuals who haven't been provided the same opportunities as people born in the
United States.

What did you do in the time between graduating undergrad and entering law school?
I'm an avid backpacker. I've been to over 30 countries on 4 continents. So between my undergrad
and law school I trekked from Costa Rica to Cusco, Peru. One of the best traveling experiences of
my life was being fortunate enough to spend my birthday at Machu Picchu.

What are you most looking forward to this school year, both personally and in your SBA role?
I'm very excited to be a part of the SBA's new professional focus. It's been my pleasure so far to
work with all the members of the SBA. Our goal of moving forward and providing the student
body with as much opportunity to advance themselves into the legal community has really begun
to take shape, and I'm thrilled to see what the year has in store.

The best tip I have for a 1L is to find a good balance of work and recreation. After six hours of
reading Constitutional Law, you deserve a study break to help recharge!

Neils Favorites:

Favorite place to study: I study the best in the library during the evening. I love the reading room
on the 5th floor.

Favorite study break: My study breaks usually have a strong caffeinated focus.

Favorite part of Suffolk Law: The Summer Abroad program in Lund, Sweden has been my
favorite part of Suffolk Law thus far. Getting the opportunity to study international law with
Swedish students and seeing the contrast between our legal systems was an enlightening
educational experience. Before the semester started I was able to fly to Europe a little bit early
with some other students. We made our way from the Radisson in Brussels to Amsterdam and
onto Sweden. It was a great chance to get to know some of my classmates outside the classroom.

Favorite coffee shop near school: Being from Seattle, I love Starbucks. Grande Pike Place roast.

Favorite movie: I love action movies. I can watch Terminator 2: Judgment Day anytime.

Neil Lindquist | SBA Chief of Staff


Kelley Sweetser, a 2L and a graduate of UMASS Amherst, is the SBA Treasurer.
As Treasurer, Kelleys primary responsibility is to be the SBAs chief financial
officer.

Do you currently have an internship/job and if so what do you most enjoy about it?
This summer I was an intern at Denner Criminal Defense Group in Boston and
am actually interning there currently as well. I have learned so much while
interning there and the experience is amazing.

What did you do in the time between graduating undergrad and entering law school?
I worked at Fidelity Investments for two years. I was a trader and worked at
both the New Hampshire campus and Boston headquarters.

What are you most looking forward to this school year, both personally and in your SBA
role?
I am looking forward to taking classes that are more specific to my interests and
getting to intern through the academic year. As far as SBA, I am really looking forward to working
with a great group of my peers to help enhance many of the great qualities Suffolk possesses.

My biggest tip is to do some sort of activity for your self a few times a week. Whether it be
grabbing coffee with friends, going to yoga, or enjoying the city, I think it is so important take a
break.

Kelleys Favorites:

Favorite place to study: My favorite place to study is at the library in the cubes. It really puts me in
the zone and allows me to concentrate on my work and block out everything else.

Favorite study break: My favorite study break is to grab lunch in the Caf with my friends. It is a
great way to catch up with my friends and it takes my mind off my studies for a bit.

Favorite part of Suffolk Law: My favorite part of Suffolk law is the community. All the students,
faculty, and employees are all so incredibly supportive and caring. The environment at Suffolk is
so positive it really helps students to thrive and make the most of their time here.

Favorite coffee shop near school: My favorite coffee shop would be Dunks, hands down.

Favorite movie: My favorite movies would be Office Space, Ferris Buellers Day Off, and
Caddyshack; basically any classic comedy.

Alan Pierce --- Class of 1974

Alan Pierce, a Suffolk Law class of 1974 graduate, is currently a founding attorney at
his workers compensation law firm. Interview conducted by Eunice Aikins-Afful, co-
director of the Alumni Affairs Committee.

What is your current position and where?
I am founding attorney at Pierce, Pierce & Napolitano 27 Congress St. Salem, Ma.
01970; a workers compensation law firm representing injured workers and their
families.

Where did you attend undergraduate?
UMass (Amherst), class of 1969.

What journals/activities/concentrations did you participate in at Suffolk Law?
Because I was an evening school student with a full time job and a family I could not participate nor were
there many opportunities.

What do you consider the best part of your job?
Helping clients through the sudden and unexpected consequences of an on the job injury which impacts
their health and comfort and financial health of the client and his/her family; especially in situations where
the insurance company contests all or part of a claim.

What type of attorney did you want to be upon entering Suffolk Law?
Since I was a workers compensation claims representative for a large insurance company and enjoyed the
challenges of this field of law, my goal was to continue as an attorney concentrating in the field.

What was your favorite class while at Suffolk?
Contracts with Professor John F.X. OBrien- the subject matter was dry but Prof OBrien was memorable.

Who was your favorite professor?
Tie- Professor OBrien and Davis Sargent.

What is your greatest professional achievement?
In 2007 I was inducted in the inaugural class of Fellows in the newly established College of Workers
Compensation Lawyers of the American Bar Association.

Who is your favorite Supreme Court Justice, living or deceased?
Earl Warren.

Any interview tips?
Be on time, neat, know the position you are applying for and ask appropriate questions. Direct, short
answers- good eye contact and the million dollar smile when appropriate.

One piece of advice?
In times of tough decisions- especially with job opportunities/changes- go with your gut.
