Project Goal
To learn how the leadership qualities of Jewish historical
figures can shape the development of religions and society.
Students will research a leader to discover the qualities and
experiences that made that person successful. Students will
apply what they have learned to major chapter concepts and
the essential questions.

Step 1: Introduce Project
Tell students that they each will research a historical Jewish
leader and present their findings about their chosen leader to
the class in a 3-minute presentation.
Activate Background Knowledge Have a class discussion
about the qualities possessed by effective and memorable
leaders. Encourage students to consider leaders they have
learned about in history classes, in modern culture, and in their
personal lives. As students brainstorm as a class, create and
display a list of leadership qualities on the board or projector.
Possible leadership qualities:

Intelligence
Physical Strength
Willingness to take risks
Compassion for others, especially the less fortunate
Persistence
Trust
Adherence to beliefs and values when faced with challenges
Step 2: Plan the Research
1. Choose a leader
Have students choose one of the following leaders to
research, or assign one leader to each student so that all
leaders are included in the presentations.

2. Discuss the Project Plan
Distribute Worksheet 1 to each student and review the
steps on the worksheet with the students.
Read Worksheet 2 to the students and discuss the
graphic organizer with them.
Review bibliographies and read worksheet 3 with the
students.
Discuss ideas for the presentations, such as using
visuals, wearing costumes, using technology to deliver
the presentation, using technology to enhance the
presentation.
3. Discuss Exhibit Assessment
Distribute Worksheet 4 to each student and review the rubric
with the students. In this project, the presentations will be
graded based on the quality of the presentation, the quality
of the research and content, and proper use of sources.
4. Approve Presentation Plans
Briefly meet with each student to monitor his or her
research progress. Provide guidance as necessary.
Step 3: Plan the Presentations
Students will use their completed worksheets to choose the
information to be included in their presentations. They will
develop outlines and notes for their presentations and
rehearse to confirm that presentation time is 3 minutes or
less. Students may practice with a partner to gain feedback
and then revise their presentations as necessary. In order to
improve their performances, encourage students to review the
rubric as they plan.
Step 4: Deliver the Presentations
Students will deliver presentations individually, so time needed
for this step will vary based on the number of students in
each class. Consider making presentation times longer or
shorter based on class size.
Step 5: Wrap Up
Lead a class discussion guided by the Essential Questions for
this chapter. Ask students how the leaders they discovered
through this project changed the world for the better. Write
any key points for students to remember on the board.

Advice this leader might give to aspiring leaders. (This section
requires students to analyze leaders' lives and values.)
4. Find and organize visuals for your presentation.
5. Choose any props or create a costume in which to deliver your
presentation.
6. Plan your presentation.
7. Practice your presentation. Remember to time your
presentation.
8. Deliver the presentation, either live or previously recorded
version.
9. Complete your Rubric Assessment.
