Issue III At this point, I must confess that Im already at a loss for words. I dont know what an editorial is. An elaborate google search taught me that I should either be criticiz- ing something or promoting it. However, I dont think two perfect days of NH65 call for the former or need the latter. As I exhausted the midnight lamp and my laptop battery, still clueless, I was inspired by Nucleya to fol- low the three-word advise were all too familiar with- fol- low your dreams (What did you think?!).While writing an editorial is hardly my lifes ambition, Nucleyas interview urged me to finish what I began. So, I thought decided to write about what stood out for me in the fest- the peo- ple. People here, to your right, your left, in front of you and behind you. Have you ever wondered what each persons story is? (Whoa. That escalated quickly?) Im getting there. See, this is exactly what I find beautiful about fests or any prolonged social gathering for that matter. Its really surprising how we meet these random people, judge them, have no idea of who they are, but some of them will probably do something we will re- member for a long time. Theres probably that one guy who is really cute, or that one girl who danced like there was no tomorrow or in my case that one guy who botched an event so badly, it was beyond funny. And over these few days, we are going to see the same fac- es, we wont know their names, we wont know their
lives but we already kind of know them. We just might have impacted someones life without even realizing it. But thats what is beautiful about a fest. It is at these large social interactions that we can truly be ourselves, judge and be judged. To get to know peo- ple, to talk to them, sometimes knowing that it wont matter because you mostly might not ever talk to them is a beautiful feeling. Its the time when every- ones miseries just have to take a step back, and peo- ple smile for no better reason than the need to be happy. Some might argue that these smiles are chem- ically induced, notable among them Flippin Kumar with his show-cause notices and security checks. But as pop culture insists, were young, and wild and free. And to me that is a cause of celebration. Throw that phone away, dont take a selfie. Or do take it and re- mind yourself that sometimes, the wish to sport all 32 teeth is enough to find that ten-second happiness. Pause, look around and remember why you smiled. Dont forget that for a long time.
Sai Kaushal Thankfully the second day didnt begin as early as the previous one although everything I was thankful for vanished when I realized that the day 2 is JLo compared to Day 1s Nicki Minaj. With all the teams having finally arrived and settled in, there was more of a buzz and fervor than before. It was clearly seen in the immense amount of par- ticipants received in the first few events, the academic events such as JAM, Taboo, Spell Bee, Parliamentary Debates. With the lunch break being god sent, people took to relax before they prepped for the evenings events. As the sun looked to set on the horizon, the fervent aura was on a rise. It was time to start the all the dance events for the day. Two to tango, the impromptu duet event, kicked off with the RGNULs girls putting up a worthy opening performance. However, it really was the UILS lads who stole the show with their electrical energy. Really,it has to be given to them to be able to get such an audience response. After the performances by another RGNUL and UILS team came the most awaited duet dance. On the stage were Divpriya and Mimansa from NLUJ and boy oh boy didnt they set the stage on fire? They made the crowd go crazy, irrespec- tive of which college you are from, you just had to whistle and ask for that performance to be repeated. After the after-waves of that sizzling performance had died down, it was time to begin with the group dance competitions. Just when people thought that the two all girls teams from RGNUL and Amity were stealing the show, RMLNLU stepped in to show that real dance didnt need to have fast beats, or even only Hindi songs. They were the only crew to dance to slow songs and a Telugu song, so hats off to them! This even was over- whelmingly concluded by UILS, and to pick out one song of what they did would be unfair for they burst with energy throughout their perfor-
mance and did justice to every song. Now there was just one event that would separate the audiences acquaintance with Nu- cleya, Battle of the Bands. It was RGNUL who opened this event too with a beautiful rendering of Coldplays classic, yellow. What followed was a performance by HNLU, and five points to them for performing a song they composed and another ten for trying to involve the audience in their performances. With the band from VIPS College finishing the event neatly, it was time. The night was young and Nucleya had arrived. Two phrases you always want to hear together. The energy in the crowd was probably the most noticeable. Even Nucleya never stopped mentioning the amount he loved us because we showed him the same love from the mi- nute he was on stage till the show was over a few hours later. The show obviously ended, but the party didnt. People still shouting Phrases from his songs and the show finally died out a few hours after the show ended. And what a show it was! The only let down for Nucleya was probably that the whole of Jodhpur wasnt here but seriously? f*** that s**t
DAY TWO AT A GLANCE Heres an exclusive chat we had with a man who needs no introduction, Udyan Sagar, popularly known by his stage name, Nucleya. Q: So, the question thats on everybodys mind, why Nu- cleya? A: Nucleya was actually my Email password a long time back and I didnt really know what else to come up with and Nucleya sounded perfectly alright, or not. But I honestly believe that noth- ing is in a name and that the kind of music you make is so much more important. Snopp doggy dog isnt the most appealing name but his music is still sick. Q: What before Nucleya? A: Before Nucleya I was in a band called BandishProjekt for a decade which I cofounded but I didnt want to stay there anymore because staying in a band means constraints, on the kind of mu- sic you do, who you do it for and I didnt like that. So I decided Id rather explore my options and do something different with music on my own. Q: What inspired you to take up Dubstep in India? A: Thats a common misconception about me. I have played dub- step for a year and a half but I am in no way a dubstep artist. My main interest lies in Heavy bass music which is the actual genre and dubstep is probably just a sub-genre, one thought Im not too interested in anyways. And yeah, I did it because it was some- thing that appealed to me and wasnt something everyone al-
ready did. Q: What comments do you have for the Indian Dubstep Scene? A: Yeah, contrary to popular belief India isnt too far behind on that front. There are nice scenes everywhere but I personally dont like what the bass music and dubstep are turning into now. I liked the early versions of the 90s when music didnt sound like someone was trying to kill you or two aliens were having sex. Q: What inspires you most? When do you feel most creative? A: Just anytime of the day. When Im in the toilet (obviously?) or in the shower or when Im just playing with my son. You never know when a tune or an idea might just hit you so I always keep my phone with me at all times so that I can record whatever I have thought of. Q: What would you like to say to the upcoming artists and musi- cians in India? A: Be true to yourself. Dont try doing something everyone has al- ready tried and tested and never settle for something that you think you dont deserve. Take the road less travelled and make your own path. Make a name for yourself in a field no one has and if you try hard enough, for long enough, success will come knocking.
