Analysis

Chapter- 2
2. Macro and Micro Analysis
2.1 DELPHI -TVS position in India:
Delphi-TVS (DTVS) which started operations by setting up its first unit in 1990 to make diesel
fuel injection system has been registering consistent growth for over 20 years. The stiff
competition in the initial years was successfully overcome with timely improvement in technology
and product quality. The company has now three manufacturing facilities. While the Mannur and
Uttarkhand plants are dedicated for manufacture of the Rotary-FIE system, the Oragadam plant
specialises in Common Rail System.
The company today is an acknowledged supplier of fuel injection system for both cars and
commercial vehicles. Addressing the DTVS Founders Day at Mannur, Mr. J.S. Chopra, its
President, referred to how the Founder, T. V. SundaramIyengar, who started business a 100 years
ago in 1911, was driven by vision, passion, commitment and values.
These virtues contributed to a large extent in making the TVS Group grow to more than 54
companies with a turnover in excess of Rs. 30,000 crores. In the current environment of changing
emission norms, growing competition and customers launching new models with shorter lead
times, the Tech Centre provided a closer customer interaction and support.Industry majors like
Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland, Mahindra & Mahindra, TAFE and Escorts are busy expanding their
operations, many multinational automobile manufacturers have set up plants in India and more are
planning to do so.
The Indian automotive industry has acquired global characteristics, and the OE customers will
expect global performance in all respects from Tier 1 suppliers. The total production volume,
including passenger vehicles, SCV/LCV and heavy commercial vehicles, is expected to touch
three million this year.ACMA and SIAM forecast a volume of 7 million by 2015 and 10 million
by 2020. The tractor volumes, presently at half a million per year, is expected to double by 2020.
6
There has been a significant increase in the level of participation and quality of presentation in
both the SGA and Suggestions Scheme, as well reflected in Delphi-TVS winning the CII Kaizen
Award, ACMA Kaizen Award and the Poka-Yoke Outstanding Award. Mr. T.K. Balaji, Managing
Director, Delphi-TVS, in his address, complimented the excellent role of the company workers in
its accelerated growth over the years.
2.2 DELPHI TVS Position at Global Area:
Delphi-TVS is a joint venture between the US-based Delphi Corp. (NYSEPH) and the TVS Group.
Delphi, with global sales of US $ 26 billion, is the world leader in automotive systems technology.
The TVS group, with a turnover in excess of Rs 8,500 crore, is the country's largest supplier of
automotive components and systems.
Delphi-TVS is the largest supplier of rotary fuel injection systems in the country catering to the
needs of cars, multi-utility vehicles and tractor segments. The company was the first to introduce
electronically-controlled rotary pumps to meet the stringent BS III emission standard for cars in
India.
To meet the emerging emission standards of the future, it is committed to introduce contemporary
Common Rail technology solutions to the growing Indian automotive industry. It is currently
developing these solutions for a leading vehicle manufacturer for a wide range of engines and is
in discussions with other customers.
According to Balaji, "Supply of Common Rail systems to engines made in India is expected this
year, marking a significant milestone in the development of Delphi-TVS". Delphi-TVS is
proposing to expand its engineering capabilities by setting up a new state-of-the art technical centre
at its existing facility in Mannur, some 30 km from here.

7

The Common Rail technology offers the user enhanced driving experience even while meeting the
increasingly stringent future emission standards. The plant at Mannur, Chennai, will focus on
meeting the needs of the Indian market and will also supply to Delphi's global customers.
The proposed centre will complement the current engineering facilities and focus on developing
new products and applications to meet future emission norms in the fast-evolving scenario.
Delphi-TVS has several significant customers in the auto industry. Leading the customer list is
Tata Motors to whom Delphi-TVS supplies rotary fuel injection systems fitted on all theIndica,
Indigo and Marina models.
Besides Tata Motors, the other customers include Maruti Udyog and Hindustan Motors. Delphi-
TVS products are also exported to Ford, in England, and the French manufacturer, Peugeot, for
fitment in the diesel engines used in cars made in India. Besides cars, Delphi-TVS supplies to
multi-utility vehicle customers such as Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Motors.Delphi-TVS also
supplies rotary pumps to leading tractor manufacturers in India and to Perkins, UK.
