Simboli, Kulturni predeo, Istorija, Promena, Resimbolizacija.
kada vremenom izgube znaenje? Kako politika utie na formiranje kulturnog predela?
U dva najvea grada Srbije, Beogradu I Novom Sadu, bavili smo se njihovim najveim simbolima: Petrovaradinskom tvravom,
Spomenikom palim borcima na Kosmaju, Avalskim tornjem i spomenikom Neznanom junaku. Na ovom mitingu istraivan je
smisao simbola u pejzau i uraena valorizacija najzanimljivijih u Beogradu i Novom Sadu kako bi ih vratili u korienje. Razma-
Kroz radionice i instalacije

Symbols. Cultural Landscapes. History. Change. Resymbolize.
On the ELASA 2012 minemeeting in Serbia, 37 participants, together with organizers and volunteers from Belgrade and Novi
Sad worked on the topic Reymbolizing. What are symbols in a landscape and what do they represent? What happens when
they become out of time? How does politics infuence creating a cultural landscape?
Two biggest cities in Serbia: Belgrade and Novi Sad, and their greatest symbols: Petrovaradin fort, Iron star monument on Kos-
maj, Avala tower and monument of Unknown hero on Avala. In the mini meeting, the interventions that would be appropriate
in these landscapes, were researched in order to be able to answer the expectations of new users. Through workshops and
installations that will be a contemporary view of genius loci, we tried to REcreate the symbols of today.

LOKACIJE: KOSMAJ / AVALA
sticanje prvih utisaka o monumentalnim spomenicima u
ovom predelu, njihovom znaenju i znaaju kroz vreme.
Pravljenjem prvih fotografja i crtanjem prvih skica se
postupno dolazilo i do razumevanja potrebe revalorizaci-
je i revitalizacije simbolike ovih i slinih prostornih celina.
LOCATIONS: KOSMAJ / AVALA
Site seeing of Avala and its two monuments- to the Un-
known Hero and Avala tower, was the starting point of
participants introduction to the topic of meeting and
getting their frst impressions of monuments in the area,
their meaning and value through time. Through making
the frst photos and sketches of these monument sites,
participants realized the reasons for revaluation and re-
vitalization of the symbols and surrounding landscapes.

What is a symbol in the landscape, where is its origin and can
it be redefned, were some of the questions we asked ourselves
at the ELASA mini-meeting in Serbia. The title Resymbolising
gave us a interesting base point from which we regarded sym-
bols in the landscape.
Symbols, we found out, are strongly rooted in time and place
by certain sociological processes. They are like monuments of a
certain condition of the society that made them. But beside that
social side, the meaning, they also have a physical form. The
question is, can we change the meaning without changing the
physical form and vice versa?
We came to a conclusion that society needs symbols to remind
itself of the past or present they stand for. But sometimes the
past layer of society is gone and all that remains of a symbol is
its physical form, a monument. In such case we can reinvent the
meaning of a monument to match it with the current sociological
situation. We can do that also by changing its form or surround-
ings. But sometimes we can also leave the monuments as they
are, reminding us of a underlying social layer that we might have
forgotten. We might even let some monuments slowly crumble
and disappear.
As landscape architect we can infuence the physical for of sym-
bols, which in turn can infuence their meaning. In this way we
play an important role as mediator between past, present and
future values in our surrounding - a knowledge that can enrich
our society.

LOKACIJE: SOPOT / KOSMAJ / AVALA
izovale lini doivljaj simbolike spomenika u datim prede-
lima. Diskusija koja se razvila tokom prezentacije maketa
je bez ikakve sumnje pokazala uspeh odrane radionice.

The frst workshop was organized in the Culture Center of
Sopot municipality. The workshop was a real challenge
for participants who had to synthesize and materialize
all their thoughts and impressions of Avala and Kosmaj
monumental landscapes and their symbolism. The result
was individually made models, which represented con-
ceptualization of personal experience of symbolism of
monuments in surrounding area. The discussion during
the presentations of models without any doubt indicated
the success of workshop.

LOKACIJE: KOSMAJ - RUEVINE MANASTIRA KASTALJANA
I SPOMENIK PALIM BORCIMA
posrednoj blizini Spomenika palim borcima i u okviru ruevina
manastira Kasteljan. Uesnici su realizovali svoje idejne kon-
cepte u vidu privremenih intervencija - instalacija u prostoru.
tim defnisao - resimbolizaciju.
LOCATIONS: KOSMAJ - RUINS OF MONASTERY KASTALJAN
AND THE MONUMENT TO KOSMAJ PARTISAN DIVISION
The workshops in protected natural area of Kosmaj included
real interventions in the vicinity of the monument to Kosmaj
partisan division and to the ruins of Monastery Kastaljan. Par-
ticipants realized their ideas and concepts through temporary
interventions - installations in space. Therefore, it appears fea-
sible to ofer appropriate actualization of this symbolism, or
according to the ELASA team belief resymbolizing.

gatile ponudu sadraja u okviru tvrave. Radne grupe
prezentujui ih u vidu runo izraenih postera.
LOCATION: PETROVARADIN FORTHRESS
The last workshop had a topic - revitalization of Petro-
varadin Fortress, one of the most important spatial and
historical sites in Novi Sad with symbolic meaning. The
participants were divided into small groups with the aim
of designing innovative suggestions, wich will enrich the
contents of fortress in a proper way. At the end of work-
