Skills Lesson: Language analysis

Examples of vocabulary/chunks to be pre-taught (in a sentence):

When I was looking for a job, I went to the employment agency.

I need an assistant to help me with the work.

The recruitment manager is going to help Jean Luc find an assistant.

Did you have a nanny when you were little?

Are you good with computers? So are you suitable to be an I.T manager?

Meaning:

*Employment agency is an agency that finds employers or employees for those who are looking for them.

*A recruitment manager is responsible for recruiting new people.

*An assistant is someone who helps a manager with some tasks.

* Something that is suitable is something appropriate for a particular person.

Pronunciation (stress / intonation / weak forms):

Employment agency

recruitment manager

assistant

suitable

Form:
Employment Agency (compound noun)
Recruitment manager (compound noun)
Assistant (noun)
Suitable (adjective)
How will you convey meaning?

I will convey meaning through pictures. If students are unable to guess the meaning I will provide
situations to help them guess.

(employment agency)
When you graduate and have a degree, how do you find a job? Who can help you find the job?

(recruitment manager)
In every agency or company, there is someone responsible for hiring new people. How do we call that
person?

I cant speak Geman. But there is a vacancy in Bourguiba School for a teacher of German. Do you think I
should apply? (suitable)

Does he find work for people who are looking for jobs?(yes)
Does he choose the best candidate for the job?(yes)

When youre suitable for something, are you able to do it? (yes)
Will you be good at it? (normally, yes)

Boardwork plan

1.

Projection of pictures to elicit/ pre-teach vocab

Writing the new words words ( eliciting form and pronunciation)

Anticipated problems / solutions (linguistic):

Problem: Students might not know the meaning of ski resort, remote, child minder, running the reception. But I
cant overload them with vocabulary in the pre-teaching stage.

Solution: I will first test how much they know and if they can guess meaning from the context and then C.C.Q. in
the later feedback stages

Problem: Some students might be reluctant to speak. Also, others might dominate in the group.
Solution: I have tried to set the task in a way as to leave everyone the opportunity to participate in the discussion.

Problem: One group might finish the controlled speaking earlier than the rest and start diverging from the focus of
the activity.
Solution: Ask the group to prepare what theyre going to say in front of the class

Anticipated problems / solutions (organisational and individual):

Problem: Number of students might not be suitable with the seating arrangement I have devised for the speaking
task.
Solution: Ask weak students to do the task together instead of individually and take turns when speaking.

Problem: Reading task might take longer than planned.

Solution: Let the students work in groups to accelerate the pace. Also, it would be a good idea to try and stick to
the allotted time for each activity.

attended about jobs.
Set context through pictures of vacancies,
recruiting. Ask students questions to activate
previous knowledge and engage them in the
topic of the lesson.

Do you know what vacancies mean? Do they
want more workers? Can you apply? Will you be
accepted for sure? Which candidate will they
choose?
Can you tell me the order of these pictures?

Prepare students for the reading task: Students

agency. Then they read the captions about Jean
Luc and Marion to facilitate the reading task.
Students are then asked to read the first two
paragraphs to answer question two, part b.
Check answers in pairs then whole class
feedback.

Students are then asked to read the rest of the
text and in pairs complete the table with
information about the job. Whole class
feedback.

Error correction

Introduce target language necessary for this
stage of the speaking task.

Groups choose a team-name and a team-
leader. The team leader manages the
discussion in the group and has the final
decision on who, the group thinks, is the
best candidate and second best candidate
for the job.

Each team leader hangs their chosen
candidate on the board and tells the class
why they chose this particular candidate.
