Maths Story and Maths Vocabulary: CIRCLE
A circle is a type of line. Imagine a straight line segment that is bent around until its
ends join. Then arrange that loop until it is exactly circular - that is, all points along that line
are the same distance from a center point.
There is a difference between a circle and a disk. A circle is a line, and so, for
example, has no area - just as a line has no area. A disk however is a round portion of a plane
which has a circular outline. If you draw a circle on paper and cut it out, the round piece is a
disk.
Maths vocabulary on a circle
Center A point inside the circle. All points on the circle are equidistant (same
distance) from the center point.
Radius The radius is the distance from the center to any point on the circle. It is half
the diameter.
Diameter The distance across the circle. The length of any chord passing through the
center. It is twice the radius.
Circumference The circumference is the distance around the circle.
Area Strictly speaking a circle is a line, and so has no area. What is usually meant is
the area of the region enclosed by the circle.
Chord A line segment linking any two points on a circle.
Tangent A line passing a circle and touching it at just one point.
Secant A line that intersects a circle at two points.

Length of circumference
The ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter is (pi), an irrational constant
approximately equal to 3.141592654. Thus the length of the circumference C is related to the
radius r and diameter d by:

Area enclosed

Area enclosed by a circle = area of the shaded square
As proved by Archimedes, the area enclosed by a circle is equal to that of a triangle whose
base has the length of the circle's circumference and whose height equals the circle's radius,
[7]

which comes to multiplied by the radius squared:

Examples of Maths Problem Story

1. Amy took a test that had 20 questions. The total grade was computed by awarding 10
points for each correct answer and deducting 5 points for each incorrect answer. Amy
answered all 20 questions and received a score of 125. How many wrong answers did she
have?
Solution: (to see the answer, change text font below with black)
She had five wrong answers. If Amy had answered all 20 questions correctly, she would
have scored 200. Since she only scored 125, she must have lost 75 points. Since each
incorrect answer results in a total loss of 15 points (10 for not getting it correct and 5 for
answering incorrectly) she must have missed 5 questions. 5 x 15 = 75, 200 - 75 = 125.

2. A large truck is crossing a bridge 1 mile long. The bridge can only hold 14000 lbs, which
is the exact weight of the truck. The truck makes it half way across the bridge and stops.
A bird lands on the truck. Does the bridge collapse? Give a reason.
Solution: (to see the answer, change text font below with black)
No it does not collapse. Because it has driven a half mile - you would subtract the gas
used from the total weight of the truck.

3. Find a simple method of solving:
6751X + 3249Y = 26751
3249X + 6751Y = 23249
Solution: (to see the answer, change text font below with black)
Add the equation to give : 10000X + 10000Y = 50000
Divide by 10000 to give : X + Y = 5
Subtract to give : 3502X - 3502Y = 3502
Divide by 3502 to give : X - Y = 1
Therefore : X = 3 and Y = 2

4. Lisa gave Megan as many dollars as Megan started out with. Megan then gave Lisa back
as much as Lisa had left. Lisa then gave Megan as back as many dollars as Megan had
left, which left Lisa broke and gave Megan a total of $80.00. How much did Lisa and
Megan have at the beginning of their exchange?
Solution: (to see the answer, change text font below with black)
Suppose x = Lisas money and y = Megans money. Then:
x y
x-y 2y (Lisa gave Megan as many dollars as Megan started out with)
2(x-y) 2y-(x-y) (Megan then gave Lisa back as much as Lisa had left)
2x-2y 3y-x
2x-2y-(3y-x) 2(3y-x) (Lisa gave Megan as back as many dollars as Megan had left)
3x-5y 6y-2x
(Lisa broke) (Lisa gave Megan a total of $80.00)
3x-5y = 0 6y-2x = 80
x =

y 6y-2(

y) = 80 (Substitute x)
x =

y y = 30
x =

(30)
x = 50 So, Lisa had $50 and Megan had $30.

5. You have a 12 liters jug full of water. You have two empty 8 liters and 5 liters jug. Now
can you divide the water into two equal parts using these jugs?
Solution: (to see the answer, change text font below with black)
12l 8l 5l
12 0 0
4 8 0
0 8 4
8 0 4
8 4 0
3 4 5
3 8 1
11 0 1

6. Dany bought a total of 20 game cards some of which cost $0.25 each and some of which
cost $0.15 each. If Dany spent $4.2 to buy these cards, how many cards of each type did
he buy? 6
Solution: (to see the answer, change text font below with black)
i. Let X be the number of cards that
cost $0.25 each and Y the number
of cards that cost $0.15 each. The
total number of cards is 20. Hence
X + Y = 20
ii. If X is the number of cards at
$0.25, then the X cards cost
0.25 X
iii. If Y is the number of cards at
$0.15, then the Y cards cost
0.15 Y
iv. The total cost of the X cards and
the the Y cards is known to be $4.2
and also given by
0.25 X + 0.15 Y = 4.2
v. We now need to solve the system
of equations

X + Y = 20
0.25 X + 0.15 Y = 4.2
vi. The first equation gives Y = 20 - X.
Substitute y by 20 - x in the second
equation and solve
0.25 X + 0.15 (20 - X) = 4.2
X(0.25 - 0.15) + 3 = 4.2
0.1 X = 1.2
X = 12
Y = 20 - 12 = 8

7. Initially the rectangular prism on the left was full of water. Then water was poured in the
right cylindrical container so that the heights of water in both containers are equal. Find
the height h of water in both containers! (round your answer to the nearest tenth of a cm).

Solution: (to see the answer, change text font below with black)
The volume of water in the rectangular prism in the left is given by
2 4 10 = 80 cm
3

The volume of water in the middle rectangular prism in given by
2 4 h = 8 h

The volume of water in cylinder on the right is given by
Pi (1)
2
h = Pi h , Pi = 3.14

Since all water in the container on the left is poured in both containers on the right, then
80 cm
3
= 8 h + Pi h

Solve to find h
h = 80 / (8 + Pi)
h = 7.2 cm (rounded to the nearest tenth of a cm)

8. At 11:00 a.m., John started driving along a highway at constant speed of 50 miles per
hour. A quarter of an hour later, Jimmy started driving along the same highway in the
same direction as John at the constant speed of 65 miles per hour. At what time will
Jimmy catch up with John?
Solution: (to see the answer, change text font below with black)
Let t be the number of hours, from 11:00 am, when Jimmy catches up with John. The
time that Jimmy will have to drive to catch up with John is t - 1/4: he starts a quarter of
an hour late. When Jimmy catches up with John, they would have traveled the same
distance. Hence
50 t = 65 (t - 1/4)

Solve for t
50t = 65t - 65/4
t = 65/60 = 1.083 hours = 1hour and 5 minutes

Jim will catch up with John at 11:00 am + 1 hour , 5 minutes = 12:05 pm
