Pi Patel: He is main character of the story.

He was named after a pool called the Piscine


Molitar and studied zoology and religion at the University of Toronto. Pi follows 3 religions:
Christianity, Islam, and Hinduism.
Ravi Patel: Ravi is the older brother of Pi. Ravi is described as athletic and popular by Pi. Pi is
often teased by Ravi.
Gita Patel: She is Pi and Ravis mother. She loves books and encourages Pi to read. She was
raised Hindu.
Santosh Patel: Pi and Ravis father. Santosh owns a zoo in Pondicherry where his family lives
in. He is Hindu but isnt religious.
Francis Adirubasmy (Mamaji): He is an elderly man that taught Pi to swim and even
influenced Pis parents to name him after a swimming pool. Pi often called him Mamaji which
means respect uncle.
Satish Kumar (Biology teacher): Mr. Kumar was Pis biology teacher. He influenced Pi to
study zoology. Pi describes him as an oddly shaped man with a triangular body.
Satish Kumar (Baker): Mr. Kumar is a sufi who introduces Pi to Islam. He influenced Pi to
study religion.
Father Martin: Father Martin is a priest whom Pi met in Munnar. He introduces Pi to
Christianity.
Richard Parker: He is a Bengal tiger who shares the lifeboat with Pi when the Tsimtsum sinks.
His name is Richard Parker due to paperwork error between the hunter and him. He kills the
hyena on the lifeboat and saves Pi from the cannibal on the ship. He is also Pis alter ego.
Orange Juice: An orangutan that boards the boat by floating on an island of bananas held
together by a net. Orange Juice is later killed by the hyena. Orange Juice is the alter ego of Pis
mom.
Hyena: An ugly, violet animal that shares the life boat with Orange Juice, the zebra, Richard
Parker, and Pi. The hyena kills the zebra and Orange Juice on the boat but is later killed by
Richard Parker. The hyena is the alter ego of the cook.
Zebra: The zebra shares the lifeboat with Pi, Orange Juice, the hyena, and Richard Parker. The
zebra has a broken leg due to jumping into the lifeboat. The zebra is the alter ego of the sailor.
Author: The person who meets the older Pi and narrates his point of view when meeting Pi.
Okamoto: The official from the Maritime Department of the Japanese Ministry of Transport. He
travels to Tomatlan, Mexico to interview Pi about the sinking of the Tsimtsum.
Chiba: He is Okamotos assistant who helps interview Pi.
The Frenchman: The Frenchman is a castaway who Pi talks to when Pi is on the boat blind. He
tries to kill and eat Pi instead of befriending Pi. Richard Parker saves Pi by killing the
Frenchman.
