THE RIGHT TRIANGLE

At the end of the lesson the students should be able to:
1. Identify the parts of the right triangle.
2. State the properties of the right triangle.
3. Solve problems involving right triangle.

PROPERTIES OF THE RIGHT TRIANGLE:

a. The sum of the interior angle of a right triangle is 180. A + B + C = 180.
b. The sum of any two sides is greater than the third side. a + b > c ; b + c > a ; a + c > b.
c. The longest side of a right triangle is the hypotenuse.
d. The two acute angles are complementary. A + B = 90.
e. The sum of the squares of the two sides is equal to the square of the hypotenuse.

EXAMPLE 1

Given a right triangle ABC with a=5in and b=12in. Find the length of the hypotenuse c.

Find c:

Solution: To find the length of the hypotenuse c, we will use the Pythagorean Theorem.
Thus,

EXAMPLE 2

(Given an acute angle and the adjacent side:) Given A = 2908, b = 35, find B, a and c.

Solution:

Solve angle B:
Since one of the properties of right triangle is two acute angles are complementary, then
A + B = 90.

B = 90 - A
= 90 - (2908)
B = 6052
