Time: 3 hours MODEL EXAM I Maximum: 100 marks

Answer ALL questions

Part A ( 10X2=20 marks)

1. Covert the following numbers into decimal:

(a). [11010]2 (b). [334]8

2. Write a C program to find the relative volatility using vapour pressure data.

3. Write the significance of ‘F’ value in ANOVA?

4. Define string constants.

5. Convert 10100 to octal, decimal and hexadecimal number.

6. Give any two applications of spreadsheet.

7. What is meant by spreadsheet?

8. What is data retrieval?

9. What is an interface?

10. What is the principle of method of least squares in data analysis?

Part B (5X16=80 marks)

11. (a). (i). Write a C program which calculates the sum of the elements in an array

with N Elements.

(ii). Write a C Program to find the area under the curve y=f(x) between x=a and

x=b.

OR

11. (b). Explain the usage of various commands in C programs.

12. (a). Using the method of least squares fit a straight line for the following data relating
the enthalpy of methane at 1 atmosphere pressure with temperature.

Data:

Enthalpy:Btu/lb 630 650 824 851 875 1050 1110 1200

Temperature -200 -100 0 100 200 300 400 500

12.(b). A mercury manometer can be converted to an electrical pressure transducer by

running a fine resistance wire through it. The resistance of the wire is proportional to the
difference in the mercury levels, ∆h. Since voltage drop is proportional to resistance
(Ohm’s law), a voltmeter can be used to measure ∆h. The following data were recorded:

Voltage drop (mV) ∆h(cm) Voltage drop (mV) ∆h (cm)

1 0 125 19

5 0 156 22.5

11 1.1 174 25

22 2.4 176 28.1

43 4.1 207 31.6

53 6.6 228 34.8

65 9.4 260 37.8

99 13.9 277 43.6

115 16.7 307 46.3

Find a formula for the calibration curve using the method of least squares.
13.(a).Determine the co-efficient of regression for the following data:

x 1 2 5 7 9 10 11 14 18

y 8 7 5 3 10 9 7 11 19

Also find the lines of regression.

OR

13. (b).The following are the results of a competitive examination:

Age of candidates No. of candidates appeared Successful candidates

18-20 100 25

20-22 80 24

22-24 76 28

24-26 80 32

26-28 50 25

28-30 45 27

30-32 56 50

32-34 78 76

Find the co-efficient of correlation and rank correlation co-efficient between and the
results of candidates.

14. (a).

OR

14. (b). The freezing points of aqueous solutions of sodium chloride are given below:
Concentration of NaCl (weight %) 0 10 20

Freezing point (oC) 0 -6.54 -16.45

15. (a). The analysis of a cracked gas sample from a Petroleum industry is given below
on volume basis:

Methane (CH4) - 45%, Ethane (C2H6)-10%, Ethylene (C2H4)-25%, Propane (C3H8)-7%,

Propylene (C3H6)- 8% and n, Butane (C4H10)- 5%. Using spreadsheet find the mass
percentage of the gases and the average molecular weights of the mixture thereby find
the specific gravity of the gas mixture.

OR

15. (b). Develop a spreadsheet for a second-order reaction 2A→2R whose rate constant
is 1 mol sec. The initial concentration of A is 1M. Calculate the half-life and plot the graph
between concentration and time..
