MUSIC VIDEO ANALYSIS SHEET

Textual Analysis

Now that you have chosen a genre and song, you will need to produce at least three
individual detailed analyses of similar products for you main task.

Analyse 1 (more you do, more marks) music videos of your choice in relation to
cinematography, sound, mise-en-scene, editing and conventions (remember Goodwins.
Genre and technical).
Task 1 -
Use the grid below to analyse your chosen music video. Remember you need to analyse how shot
types, camerawork, Mise en Scene, editing, intertextuality and representation are used to make
the video appeal to the target audience. Dont describe what you see, analyse how its being
presented to you.
Take screenshots from the video to illustrate your analysis and use a website like www.lyrics.com
to find the lyrics. Write the lyric that matches the screenshot below it. If its a musical break then
describe it, for example, Drum solo and guitar feedback. In the section called Shot type and
movement describe what the frame is and if the camera is still or moving then analyse the effect
of this. In the box labelled analysis you need to look at everything you see in the screenshot and
talk about why its there and how it appeals to an audience. For the box marked Edits you should
note what sort of edit or transition is used. Theres an example below.
MUSIC VIDEO ANALYSIS Rolo Tomassi Party Wounds
Remember Dont just describe. You need to analyse the effect it has too. Always try and link it
back to how it appeals to audience.

Music Video Textual Analysis Paloma Faith- Can't rely on you

1 Shot type and camera movement
Mid shot
No camera movement
Analysis

This part of the video is representing how
the artist cannot rely on any man, pervious
to this other men have betrayed her and now
her driver is abandoning her as well. Paloma
is shown to be the focus of the audience's
attention due to her red dress and red hair,
this contrasts against the dark lighting, and
male characters clothing. This MS is used so
that the audience can see both the narrative
and how the character is reacting, as you
can see her facial expression.

2 Shot type and camera movement
Long shot, high angle, no movement
Analysis

This shot is a good representation of the
song as it represents that the man in red is
playing games (chess) with more than one
woman. The man is a bright colour
compared to the woman in beige robes as it
shows that he is in charge and further up the
hierarchy. The women are all wearing the
same thing to show that they are all in the
same position and all under the man's
control.

Shot type and camera movement Analysis
Close up, Handheld cam

This shot show that she is hiding/spying on
someone due to her dark clothing blending
in with the setting. The lyrics also suggest
that she has perhaps seen something she
wishes she hadn't whilst in this situation.
The close-up allows the audience to connect
with the artist emotional as they can clearly
seen the emotion on her face and in her eyes
that she has been hurt by someone.

Music/lyrics
"my melted heart went right down the
drain"

Analysis

This shot represents the trauma and upset
that the artist is experiencing realising that
her partner has possibly been cheating or
going behind her back, previously her
decides that she is the one 'out of the chess
game' symbolising that he does not care
about her and this is the aftermath. The mid
shot allows the audience to see that the other
girls in the game are still supporting her as
they understand the situation.

Music/lyrics
