Topic: Does college students participation in risky driving behavior difer
according to gender and the type of institution they attend?
Introduction
-Previous research has examined risky driving behaviors in African American students at
HBCUs, other research has examined risky driving behaviors at predominately hite institutions,
but there doesn!t appear to be any students that combine the to"
-#here are multiple studies that examine one ethnic group,usually of Caucasian descent, this
makes the results difficult to generali$e to the larger population, including African American
students"
-Conducting a study that compares students at HBCUs and P%&s , makes the results relevant to
African American students and allos for comparison beteen the groups to detect a possible
difference"
-As ell as examining the relationship beteen students at HBCUs and P%& s,gender should
also be analy$ed, to detect differences beteen the genders"
-#he goal is to generali$e this information to students at other P%&s and HBCUs"

Methods
Sample

the Atlanta University Center ill be surveyed"
- #he population e ill be examining is college students , both black and hite" *ur
sample includes students from the AUC ho are representative of black college students and
students from georgia tech ho are representative of hite college students"
- #he stratified random sampling method ill be used "#he sample ill include +,,

from the AUC, -, ill be male and -, ill be female"
- Participants ill be found from college campuses in the AUC as ell as )eorgia #ech"
- Participants ill respond to a flier thats asks for participation in a student involving risky
driving behaviors" (olloing their response, information ill be collected from the participant
to ensure that they .ualify" #here ill only be -, males and females selected from )eorgia tech
and the same from the AUC"
- &nclusion criteria for )eorgia tech include being a currently enrolled student and being
caucasian " &nclusion criteria for students in the AUC include being a currently enrolled student
and being African American" /tudents ill be beteen the ages of +0-12 "Anyone ho does
not fit the above criteria ould be excluded"
Measures
- #here are to independent variables in this study" #he first &3 is gender, the levels are
male and female"
- #he second &3 is the type of institution attended , the levels are Historically Black
College and Predominately %hite institution"
- #he 43 is risky driving behaviors" &n this study risky driving behaviors are defined as +"

- A .uestionnaire ill be used as the measure for all variables in this study" #he

indicate that they participate in risky driving behaviors more often ill have a higher score than

the completion of the survey"
