Explain with definition and examples what is Quantity Surveryors?
Definition : A quantity surveyor manages all costs relating to building and civil
engineering projects, from the initial calculations to the final figures. Quantity Surveyor
is responsible for ensuring that the project cost does not exceed the provisions of the
budget set by the employer or client. The Quantity Surveyor will be involved with a
project from the very beginning of a project until the final account. Therefore the
accurate and objective information about the project is essential to ensure that the cost
of which is estimated by the Quantity Surveyors are in the areas of budget expenses.
When an expertise and the information is inaccurate, then the estimated costs to be
incurred by the Quantity Surveyor will over cost the exactly financial planning. This may
happened because there have been mistakes and errors either intentionally or
unintentionally.
Explanation : A quantity surveyor may work for either the client or the contractor,
working in an office or on site. They are involved in a project from the start, preparing
estimates and costs of the work. When the project is in progress, quantity surveyors
keep track of any variations to the contract that may affect costs and create reports to
show profitability. Surveyors seek to minimise the costs of a project and enhance value
for money, while still achieving the required standards and quality. Many of these are
specified by statutory building regulations, which the surveyor needs to understand and
adhere to.
EXAMPLE OF THE ROLE OF QUANTITY SURVERYORS:
1) Provide a feasibility study
-To ensure that the project is compatible with the planned location, it is the responsibility
of Quantity Surveyors to prepare a feasibility study for the project to be held
accountable. With this possibility the employer or client (client / owner) will know the
benefits or loss estimate by the feasibility study of Quantity Surveryors. Any waste
material that is not needed can also be avoided if the right quantity of research carried
out in detail so as to reduce the cost of building materials whenever possible with
material used as minimum as it can.

2) Calculate the change in work
-If there is a change of work during the construction process so the Quantity Surveyor's
role is to review the works involved. By calculating the change in the work involved, the
Quantity Surveyor will be able to know the actual cost of works is whether it increases
or decreases the cost of the original.
3) Prepare the Tender Documents
- To choose a contractor who is qualified for a particular project, then the tender will be
open to interested contractors. Among the things that will be done at this stage is like
preparing bills of quantities based on drawings from consultants of Architects and
Engineers. Accuracy in the preparation of bills of quantities is important in order to avoid
the problems that arise when the cost of construction process begins. The Quantity
Surveyor is required to state the closing date for the tender in question.
4) Prepare the Contract Documents
- Once a client makes the decision of selecting the right contractors, then the Quantity
Surveyor will prepare the contract documents complete with all documents, forms of
contract, specification and many more.
