Chess: Man Vs Machine

This project is about chess programs along with touching upon how they work, their
potential, and uses. Chess programs are the programs that play chess against the human another
computer, and the computer is just a computer that runs the program. The game of chess is a
strategy board game that is a good fun mental exercise. long with that it is a good game that
will help you to understand peoples thinking processes, thus allowing for better understanding of
fellow human beings.
Chess is a strategy board game comprising of two players one playing, white pieces the
other playing black. The !oard consists of twenty six s"uares of alternating black and white, and
it has thirty two pieces with sixteen on each side. These sides ha#e a king and "ueen, two rooks,
bishops, and knights, and eight pawns each. The pawns and the knights are the only pieces that
can mo#e first turn. The reason for this is a pawn is out front and knights are the only pieces that
can jump another, which brings me to piece mo#ement. Chess is an interesting game and one of
the reasons for this is that unlike checkers each piece has a different set of mo#es that it can
preform. $or example the pawns and the knights are the only pieces that can mo#e first tern. The
reason for this is a pawn is out front and knights are the only pieces that can jump another, which
brings me to piece mo#ement. pawn can mo#e two spaces first mo#e but after that only one
space, and they can only attack diagonally, bishops can mo#e any number in a diagonal direction
where rooks are the opposite and can mo#e any number forward, backward, or side to side. The
"ueen is a combination of the rook and bishop where it can mo#e in any of the directions that
they can and any number in those directions, and lastly but most importantly the king who can
mo#e any of the directions of the king but only one space. %ow you are probably thinking what
is the point of the pawns and king, well the king is the key piece who if captured or put in check
mate the game is won by the other player. nd the pawn besides being a grunt will if brought to
the other side of the board become any piece other than a king.
Chess programs are good for people who enjoy chess, want to get better at it, or
both. This is because you can play chess with it any time, and set it to any le#el of difficulty that
will challenge you or just gi#e you a relaxing game. &ifferent programs ha#e different purposes,
but most commercial chess engines are meant to change a human opponent depending on there
le#el.
There are many chess programs out there. These programs all ha#e different goals, but
they share one goal in common. That goal is to play chess against humans and'or other programs.
Chess programs ha#e lists of all legal mo#es in there databases, from which they draw
information and than execute it in the way which it calculates as best. (t plays multiple mo#es
ahead on both its and its opponents mo#es in a way that can be #isuali)ed as a tree. s it searches
it will do a mo#e at a time till the time runs out or it finds a good solution of possible mo#es.
This is called a search algorithm, and it is what allows the computer to best choose its mo#es for
what mo#es a person might use .
Chess computers ha#e become master chess players, and some examples of chess
computers are &eep Thought and &eep !lue. it has e#en been thought that they will e#entually
become undefeatable at chess, this is because with a strong enough computer and program it can
theoretically make the perfect mo#es. These supper computers that are built for the sole purpose
of chess may be the future of competiti#e chess.
Computer chess is just that only you are not competing agent a human opponent, but
instead you are facing off against a computer program designed to win through mathematical
e"uations and constant recalculations. Thus it could be possible for a powerful enough computer
with an extremely well written program could always win against any human opponent any
amount of times. (n the future chess could become a computer only sport.
