This information is supplied to inform potential applicants about admission and scholarship allocation that is specific to
Melbourne School of Engineering (MSE) and answers many frequently asked questions. It is also a guide to the way MSE
assesses transcripts from many other local and international institutions, and for applicants to make a better informed
assessment of their chances of being awarded a scholarship.

Successful applicants for admission and scholarships will typically:
have strong support from their supervisor
be placed in the top 5% of their graduating class
have evidence of research potential by having completed a research project as part of their final year of their
Bachelors or Master degree
have a qualification from a University with a well recognised research profile (see below)

In 2012 MSE received over 400 applications for candidature, and made over 300 offers for candidature. Of these 300
offers, 40% were offered scholarships.

Research candidates who are not awarded a scholarship may be able to negotiate a studentship with their supervisor,
however it is recommended negotiation commences before an application for research candidature is submitted.

HOW DO OTHER INSTITUTIONS SCORING SYSTEMS COMPARE WITH UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE
SCORING?

MSE uses the Melbourne Scholarships Assessment Guidelines as the method for standardising assessment of
applications for candidature and scholarships. The School calculates a score for each application mainly using academic
performance as indicated by transcripts; however publications, professional experience and the research profile of your
last institution of study are also taken into consideration and may increase your final score slightly.

HOW ARE TRANSCRIPTS SCORED?
Scores are calculated on the FINAL TWO YEARS of relevant study as indicated below:

the subjects are technical,
otherwise the results from
individual technical subjects will be
combined to calculate GPA.

qualification is ungraded,

required for assessment by
