This information is supplied to inform potential applicants about admission and scholarship allocation that is specific to Melbourne School of Engineering (MSE) and answers many frequently asked questions. It is also a guide to the way MSE assesses transcripts from many other local and international institutions, and for applicants to make a better informed assessment of their chances of being awarded a scholarship.
Successful applicants for admission and scholarships will typically: have strong support from their supervisor be placed in the top 5% of their graduating class have evidence of research potential by having completed a research project as part of their final year of their Bachelors or Master degree have a qualification from a University with a well recognised research profile (see below)
In 2012 MSE received over 400 applications for candidature, and made over 300 offers for candidature. Of these 300 offers, 40% were offered scholarships.
Research candidates who are not awarded a scholarship may be able to negotiate a studentship with their supervisor, however it is recommended negotiation commences before an application for research candidature is submitted.
HOW DO OTHER INSTITUTIONS SCORING SYSTEMS COMPARE WITH UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE SCORING?
MSE uses the Melbourne Scholarships Assessment Guidelines as the method for standardising assessment of applications for candidature and scholarships. The School calculates a score for each application mainly using academic performance as indicated by transcripts; however publications, professional experience and the research profile of your last institution of study are also taken into consideration and may increase your final score slightly.

Scores are calculated on the FINAL TWO YEARS of relevant study as indicated below:
Bachelor onl y The penultimate year score will make up one- third of the final score and the final year will make up two thirds of the final score. Only technical subjects are taken into consideration.
Bachelor plus a one year Masters The final year of the Bachelor will make up one third of the final score, and the Masters will make up two thirds of the score.
Masters by Coursework 1.5 years of full time study The score will be based on the average of all subjects often listed on the transcript as a cumulative GPA. This score will only be used if all the subjects are technical, otherwise the results from individual technical subjects will be combined to calculate GPA.
Masters by Research If the qualification is ungraded, examiners reports and/or a copy of the thesis will be required for assessment by Department. Please submit your examiners report and/or thesis with your application.
WHAT IS A COMPETITIVE SCORE? Please note: these are University of Melbourne equivalent scores calculated by the Graduate Research Scholarship Committee that takes into consideration transcripts, publications, research experience and ranking of previous institution. These may change slightly each year depending on the strength of the applicant cohort
