The EGR valve (89) is combined with an electric EGR vacuum transducer (Y31/1).
The EGR [ARF] vacuum transducer (Y31/1) stabilizes the sharply varying intake manifold vacuum and is
actuated by the ME control unit by means of a PWM signal, frequency approx. 10 HZ, on/off ratio approx. 30 -
100%.
The EGR valve is opened to a varying extent as a result of this actuation with a vacuum of approx. 80 to 200
mbar and the quantity of exhaust gases which are recirculated, is controlled in this way.
The exhaust gases are recirculated in line with the map stored in the ME control unit as soon as the following
conditions are met:
Coolant temperature between 60C and 110C

Partial load.
The map is designed to achieve optimum fuel consumption. In this case as much exhaust gas as possible is
recirculated without impairing engine running or exhaust emissions.
Low-oxygen exhaust is inducted at the EGR valve, depending on the opening cross-section. As a result, the
fuel-air mixture contains less oxygen. The combustion temperature drops and the formation of NO X is reduced.
The inducted air mass is reduced by the quantity of exhaust gases which are recirculated. In line with this, the
ME control unit meters less fuel.

From connection VAC the intake manifold vacuum reaches the pressure regulator, which stabilizes the intake
manifold vacuum in line with engine speed and throttle valve position via a control valve to approx. -200 mbar.
The controlled vacuum flows further via a hose line to the following electric unit.
This unit is actuated by the ME control unit with a pulse width modulation signal (frequency approx. 10 Hz,
on/off ratio approx. 30 to 100%) at the ground end. The developing magnetic field influences via the coil anchor
the valve unit as follows:
No signal from control unit:
The connections OUT and ATM are linked. The exhaust gas recirculation valve is close (ventilated).
Signal from control unit:
The valve unit opens proportional to the current flow in the coil. The vacuum acts partially or fully at

The secondary air injection heats up the catalytic converter more rapidly to its operating temperature and thus
improves the emission levels in the warming-up phase.
Function
The electric air pump (M33) is actuated through the secondary air injection relay. The current consumption of
the electric air pump (M33) is as much as 35 A.
Air injection relay and air pump switchover valve (Y32) are actuated by the motor electronics control unit

The air pump switchover valve is supplied with vacuum from the intake manifold through a check valve. The
air pump switchover valve, when actuated, switches the intake manifold pressure through to the air shutoff
valve (126). The aspiration shutoff valves open and the air supplied by the air pump is forced through drillings
in the cylinder heads to the exhaust side.
The injected air reacts with the hot exhaust gases in the outlet port. An heads to the exhaust side.

The air pump switchover valve passes on the intake manifold pressure to the aspirator shutoff valve (126). This
opens and the air delivered by the air pump is pressed into the exhaust manifold.
The injected air reacts with the hot exhaust gases in the outlet port. An oxidation of carbon monoxides (CO) and
hydrocarbon (HC) takes place and results in an additional increase in the exhaust temperature.

Secondary air injection warms up the catalytic converter more rapidly to its operating temperature and thus
improves the emission levels in the warming-up phase.
The electric air pump (M33) is actuated through the air pump relay (K40/4k3) (model 202), or through the front
SAM control module with fuse and relay module, secondary air injection relay (N10/1kO) (model 203)
The current consumption of the electric air pump (M33) is as much as 35 A.
Secondary air injection relay and air pump switchover valve (Y32) are actuated simultaneously by the engine
control module for up to 150 seconds after engine start if:
coolant temperature >10C and <60C
engine speed <3000 rpm
throttle valve not fully opened
After actuation, the secondary air injection remains inhibited until the coolant temperature is greater than
approx. +60C ist and then drops to below 40C
The pump draws in air through a maintenance-free filter and pumps it to the air shutoff valve. The valve at the
same time prevents the exhaust gases from flowing back to the air pump (check valve discontinued).
The air pump switchover valve switches the intake manifold pressure through to the air shutoff valve (126).
This opens and the air supplied by the air pump is forced into the exhaust manifold.
The injected air reacts with hot exhaust gases in the outlet port. An oxidation of carbon monoxide (CO) and
hydrocarbon (HC) takes place and results in an additional increase in the exhaust temperature.
Engines fitted with supercharger
The injected air is drawn off on the pressure side downstream of the compressor. No air pump is required.

When actuating, the anchor plate (a) is pulled by the solenoid (d) and the sealing rubber (f) closes the aeration.
The connection between port 2 and port 3 is opened. So that the vacuum from the intake manifold is built up to
the aspirator shutoff valve. In the de-energized state the connection between port 1 and port 3 is re-established
and air is thus admitted to port 3.

The aspirator shutoff valve (126) is opened via the air pump switchover valve through vacuum or closed
through ventilation. The injected air of the air pump can flow through if the aspirator shutoff valve is actuated.
The check valve (126b) prevents when air injection is deactivated the flowing in of exhaust to the vacuum
diaphragm (126a) and therefore protects it against thermal destruction and contamination.

Remove oxygen sensors (upstream of
catalytic converter)

1 Remove air filter housing (1).
Removal:
Remove air filter housing by pulling it
vertically up and off the cylinder head
covers.
Installation:
Moisten the retaining rubber on the cylinder
head covers and the seal of hot film mass air
flow sensor in the air filter housing lightly
with lubricant.

TWC) out of the fixture and
