during the launch of the Africa Education and Development Trust website at Jamia
Mosque. WIth him are Alim High School director Ahmed Yusuf (Left) and the Vice
Chancellor of Umma University Prof. Abdulrazak Shaukat
Muslims in the country will tomorrow join
millions of their counter-parts around the
globe for the Eid ul Adhha celebrations
(the feast of sacrifce) which mark the com-
pletion of the Hajj.
The Imam of Jamia mosque Nairobi Sheikh
Muhammad Swalihu stressed that this
years Eid ul Adhha celebration will be
marked tomorrow coinciding with the ritual
of standing at the plains of Arafah which is
marks the climax of the pilgrimage.
Speaking during a last weeks khutbah (ser-
mon) at the Mosque, the Imam called for
Muslims to celebrate the event in unity say-
ing that the pilgrimage emboldens the unity
and brotherhood of mankind and Muslims
are supposed to uphold these values.

The government must address historical
injustices and marginalization in the Mus-
lim community as a measure to address
the challenges posed by terrorism, a new
report released by an international think-
tank said.
The present context where counter-terror-
ism operations persecute the wider ethnic
and faith communities is further alienation
of Muslims, The Brussels-based Interna-
tional Crisis Group (ICG) said in a new re-
port released on Friday.
The report titled Kenya: Al-Shabaab
Closer to Home, noted that Muslims in
the country have been victims of institu-
tionalized discrimination and marginaliza-
tion, factors which have been exploited by
extremist groups to recruit supporters for
their cause.
The think tank noted that by basing on so-
cial and economic grievances, Al Shabaab
militia group has exploited the countrys
religious and ethnic fault lines to advance
its agenda and called for a concerted ef-
fort between the state, political players and
Muslim leadership in order to address the
injustices and marginalization problem to
prevent extremists from articulating local
grievances. The Kenyan government in-
cluding county governments most affected,
opposition politicians and Kenyan Muslim
leaders, must work together to address
historical grievances of marginalization
among Muslim communities in Nairobi, the
coast and the north east, said the report.
In its campaign against the threat of terror-
ism, the report said measures being taken
by the government have served to alienate
the Muslim community in the fght against
terrorism where a whole community is vic-
timized instead of the perpetrators. ICG
called on the government to review its
counter terrorism operations to ensure that
it is not seen to be victimizing and conse-
quently alienating the community.
The present context is serving only to lose
further hearts and minds. Instead of clos-
ing ranks as they managed just in the after-
math of Westgate, Kenyas political elites
have bought into the deadly discourse of
ethnic and religious recriminations, the re-
port states.
According to the document which was re-
leased last Friday, counterterrorism op-
erations are characterized by widespread

Arafah which is in Makkah. It is not consist-
ence with the teachings of Islam to fast on
Saturday which will be a day of feasting and
celebration, said the Imam.
It is therefore, wrong for someone to imply
that Muslims in Kenya have also their own
Arafah. Is it in Kasarani or in Uhuru Park?
asked the Imam.
The Sheikh noted with concern that it is
unfortunate and regrettable to have differ-
ences during Eid ul Adhha celebration em-
phasizing that celebrations of Eid ul Adhha

In his sermon the Imam appealed to all f-
nancially able Muslims to engage in the ritu-
al of animal sacrifce saying that it is the best
deed on the day of Eid ul Adhha. Whoever

Muhoros allegation on Darul Irshad 'malicious'
'Address injustice
Comments made by the CID director Nde-
gwa Muhoro on the closure of Darul Irshad
Centre are malicious and intended to put
the institution in disrepute.
The Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar also
took issue with Muhoro for commenting
on court matters and told him to base his
comments with facts and refrain from in-
timidating Muslim institutions. The matter
is already in court and he should not use
his position to spread disinformation and
malign Muslim institutions, he said during
a consultative meeting on Tuesday called
to discuss the matter.
It appears that there is a plot to clamp
down on Muslim educational institutions on
the pretext that there are promoting radi-
calism and terrorism. The comments from
the CID director are meant to win public
opinion to support the drive, he said.
In his comments, the Marsabit Senator
Godana Hargura said that while Muslim
leaders are frmly opposed to all acts which
are detrimental to national security, they
abhorred the attempts to collectively pun-
ish the community and its institutions. If
there have evidence that some people are
training students in terrorism, let them take
action against the law breakers instead
of closing down mosques and madrasas.
This is collective punishment, he said.
On his part, the executive offcer of Darul
Irshad Centre Furqan Chacha said the
human right violations and alienated com-
munities whose cooperation and support is
vital in the fght against terrorism. It went
further to state that the Somali-speaking
communities in Nairobi have become the
target of offcial and popular repression.
The government should carefully consider
the impact of offcial operations such as
Operation Usalama, and paramilitary op-
erations of the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit
(ATPU) when they appear to target whole
communities, and allow for transparent in-
vestigations and redress where operations
are found to have exceeded rule of law and
constitutional rights and safeguards, the
report further observed.
Among its recommendations, it called
on the government to implement the rec-
ommendations of the 2008 Presidential
Special Action Committee known as the
Sharawe report which revealed institution-
alized discrimination against Muslims. The
report was commissioned by former Presi-
dent Mwai Kibaki in 2007 and while the
committees fnal report was submitted to
Kibaki in March 2008, its contents are yet
to be offcially made public but appeared in
the 2013 Truth, Justice and Reconciliation
(TJRC) report.
The Sharawe report revealed institution-
alized discrimination, including in the issu-
ance of national identity cards and pass-
ports and criticized ATPU for operating
without due regard to the existing law of
the land.
The report also revealed the existence of a
special vetting committee for Muslim pass-
port applicants at the Immigration depart-
ment which made it diffcult for Muslims to
attain travel documents.
If the Kenyan government is successfully
to cut grassroots support for Al-Shabaab,
entrenched institutional and socio-econom-
ic discrimination against Muslims should
be addressed through implementation of
the committees sensible recommenda-
tions, the report further observed.
Machakos County Commissioner Anne
Gakuria made it clear in court that the insti-
tution was closed down on health grounds
and not security concerns as alleged by
Muhoro. Perhaps he got information that
we plan to reopen after working on the
health concerns and his comments are
meant to frustrate the reopening plans.
We have a court order and it should be
respected as this country is not governed
by roadside justice but rule of the law, he
said as he dismissed claims that students
from the centre were arrested for alleged
radicalization activities.
We are a law abiding and Darul Irshad
has never been involved in activities which
promote terrorism and radicalization. On
the contrary, we have been having a cor-
dial relationship with county security off-
cials, he added.
The centre plans to reopen next week af-
ter a three-month closure. It provides basic
Islamic course for new Muslims as well as
poultry and fsh farming, animal and crop
husbandry to promote sustained living to
students.
In Mombasa, civil Society organisations
decried the threats to close down Muslim
institutions on alleged radicalization of
youth and termed the government's action
as tantamount to infringing the freedom of
worship.
The organisations called on the police to
arrest those recruiting youths to join Al
Shabbab instead of closing the educa-
tional institution. "If the government has
evidence of people recruiting youths to go
to Somalia, they should arrest and pros-
ecute them and not close down an institu-
tion," said the Executive Director of Coast
Women in Development, Betty Sharon.
Speaking in Mombasa during a press
briefng attended by various organisations
which included Haki Africa and the Mus-
lim for Human Rights, Sharon stressed
that it was wrong for the government to
violate the rights of law abiding citizen be-
cause of the few criminals.

Closure of passport offces will hurt ordinary people-
Sheikh Ateka
The Mombasa Governor has faulted the
decision by the new Immigration director
Gordon Kihalangwa, close down regional
immigration offces.
In a press statement sent to media houses,
Hassan J oho said while he is not against
streamlining of passport issuance, the de-
cision will hurt ordinary people who will
bear an additional burden of travelling to
Nairobi to apply for the documents.
We fully support strict security measures
to be rolled out in line with global standard
practices to protect the integrity of the Ken-
yan passport, but it is unfair for the gov-
ernment to shut down the offce, he said
in reaction to the planned closure of the
Mombasa regional offce.
Already, the director has ordered the clo-
sure of the Garissa, Embu and Nakuru of-
fces while those of Mombasa and Kisumu
are slated for closure by the year end.
The Council of Imams and Preachers of
Kenya (CIPK) also added its voice against
the decision with the newly appointed na-
tional chairman Sheikh Abdalla Ateka de-
scribing the directive by the immigration di-
rector, Maj Gen (Rtd) Gordon Kihalangwa
as going against the spirit of devolution.
Speaking to The Friday Bulletin, Sheikh
Ateka said closing down of the offces will
greatly inconvenience applicants who will
incur added cost of travelling and accom-
modation expenses.
He said the move goes against the spirit
of taking services close to the people and
went on to state that it is unfair to ask Ken-
yans to travel to Nairobi to apply for pass-
ports yet the same process can be done at
regional offces.
''There is no problem centralizing the ac-
tual issuing of passports but Kenyans don't
have to be subjected to long and expensive
journeys to Nairobi to apply for passport.
Regional offces should be allowed to han-
dle the application process,'' Ateka said.
Ateka pointed out that Kenyans were in
need of the immigration and passport ser-
vices hence it was wrong for the govern-
ment to close down the offces instead it
should have facilitated the opening of more
offces in other counties to provide the ser-
vices for the local residents.
He emphasized that the government
should put in place measures to prevent
non- Kenyans from acquiring passports
fraudulently instead of collective punish-
ment to applicants who are genuine and
entitled to have the traveling documents.
Security can be tightened without shutting
down the offces, he emphasized.

"Turn in prayer to your Lord and sacrifce
to Him alone." (Srah al-Kauthar (108):2)
Udh-hiyah (sacrifce) is among the great
rituals of Islam, which signify the Oneness
of Allah, His Blessings, and Bounties. It re-
minds us the exemplary obedience of our
father, Ibrahm (alaihi as-salm), to His
Lord and his great sacrifces to Him. Udh-
hiyah encompasses much goodness and
blessings and thus acquires a great deal of
importance in the lives of Muslims.
"And for every nation We have appointed
religious ceremonies, that they may men-
tion the Name of Allah over the beast of
cattle that He has given them for food. And
your Lord is One Lord, so you must submit
to Him Alone (in Islam)" [Surah al-Hajj (22):
34]
Its meaning and defnition
Udh-hiyah refers to the animal (camel, cat-
tle or sheep) that is sacrifced as an act of
worship to Allah, during the period from af-
ter the Eid prayer on the Day of Nahr (Eid
al-Adh-ha) until the last day of Tashrq (the
13th day of Dhul-Hijjah), with the intention
of offering sacrifce. Allah says: "Say (O
Muhammad (sallalahu alaihi wa-sallam)):
'Verily, my prayer, my sacrifce, my living
and my dying are for Allah, the Lord of the
Alamn (mankind, Jinns and all that ex-
ists)." [Srah al-An'm (6): 162]
The Principle of Udh-hiyah (Qurbani)
The basic rule of Udh-hiyah is that sacri-
fce is required at an appointed time from
one who is alive, on behalf of himself or
on behalf of his household. With regards to
Udh-hiyah of a deceased person, if he has
bequeathed up to one third of his wealth for
the purpose of sacrifce or included it in his
Waqf (endowment), then his wishes must
be carried out. Otherwise, offering sacrifce
on behalf of the deceased is a good deed
and it is considered to be giving charity on
behalf of the dead.
Animals prescribed for Udh-hiyah are cam-
els, cattle and sheep. With regards to shar-
ing a sacrifce, then a camel or a cow can
be shared by seven people, this is based
on the narration of J abir (radhi allahu
anhu), who said: "The Messenger of Allh
(sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) commanded
us to share camels and cattle, each seven
men sharing one animal." [Sahh Muslim]
If a sheep, a goat or a ram is offered for
Udh-hiyah, then sharing is not allowed,
since no evidence is found in the Sunnah
for it. It should be mentioned here that the
scholars agree that sacrifcing an animal
and giving its meat in charity is better than
giving its value in charity. The Messenger
of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) chose
to perform sacrifce and he did not do any-
thing but that which is best and most beft-
ting.
From the conditions of Udh-hiyah is that
the animal offered for sacrifce must have
reached the required age, one year for a
goat, two years for a cow and fve years for
a camel. The animal should be completely
free of any faults because sacrifce is an
Udh-hiyah (Qurbaani) - The annual sacrifce
Muhammad Salih Al Munajid
act of worship and Allah is Tayyib (Good)
and He only accepts that which is Tayyib.
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi
wa-sallam) said: "There are four that will
not be accepted for sacrifce: a one-eyed
animal whose defect is obvious, a sick
animal whose sickness is obvious, a lame
animal whose limp is obvious and an ema-
ciated animal that has no marrow in its
bones." [(Sahh) by Shaikh al-Alban in
Sahh al-Jam]
Milder defects do not disqualify an animal,
but it is makrooh to sacrifce such animals,
for e.g. animal with a horn or ear missing,
or an animal with slits in its ears, etc. Who-
ever honours the rites of Allah; this has to
do with the taqwaa (piety and righteous-
ness) of his heart.
The sacrifcial animal is not for sale. It is
forbidden to sell the animal chosen for
sacrifce, except for a better exchange. If
it gives birth to an offspring, the offspring
must be sacrifced along with it. It is per-
missible to ride the animal. Narrated Abu
Hurayrah (radhi allahu anhu), the Messen-
ger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam)
saw a man leading his camel. He (sallal-
lahu alaihi wa-sallam) said: "Ride it." The
man replied: "It (the animal) is for sacri-
fce." The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu
alaihi wa-sallam) said: "Ride it." A second
or a third time." [Sahh Muslim]
Prescribed time for sacrifce
The animal can be sacrifced after the Eid
prayer and the Khutbah (not when the
Khutbah or the prayer starts) until before
the sunset of the last day of Tashrq, which
is 13th Dhul-Hijjah. Rasulullah salallahu
alayhi wa sallam said: "Whoever sacrifces
before the prayer let him repeat it." [Sahh
Muslim]
It is related from Ali radhiallahu anhu "The
days of Nahr (sacrifce) are the day of al-
Adh-ha and the three days following it."
Slaughtering the animal with one's own
hands is better, but if one does not do so,
it is mustahab (liked, preferable) for him
to be present at the time of slaughtering.
Anas radhiallahu anhu reported that rasu-
lullah salallahu alayhi wa sallamsacrifced
with his own hands, two horned rams with
black markings, reciting the name of Allah
and glorifying Him (saying Allhu-Akbar).
He placed his foot on their sides (while sac-
rifcing). [Sahh Muslim]
Eating from one's sacrifce is mustahab
(liked, preferable). It is also mustahab for
him, who performs the Udh-hiyah, not to
eat before he offers his sacrifce; he should
break his fast with the meat of his sacrifce
after the prayer. Rasulullah salallahu alayhi
wa sallam: Let every man eat from his sac-
rifce." [Sahh a-Jam]
Dividing the meat into three is mustahab
(liked, preferable), one-third to keep for
oneself, one-third to be given as gifts and
one-third to be given in charity. This was
the opinion of Ibn Mas'd and Ibn Umar
radhiallahu anhuma. [(Sahh) Sunan Ibn
Majah]
Selling any part of the sacrifced animal
is prohibited
Scholars agree that it is not permissible to
sell anything from the sacrifced animal's
meat, skin or fat. Rasulullah salallahu alay-
hi wa sallam said: "Whoever sells the skin
of his Udh-hiyah, there is no Udh-hiyah
for him (i.e. his sacrifce is not counted)."
(Sahh al-Jami]
The butcher should not be given anything
from the sacrifce, by way of reward or pay-
ment. Ali radhiallahu anhu said: " Rasulull-
ah salallahu alayhi wa sallam commanded
me to take care of the sacrifce and to give
its meat, skin and raiment (covering used
for protection) in charity, and not to give
anything of it to the butcher as compensa-
tion. He said: 'We will give him something
from what we have.'" [Agreed upon]
Cutting of the hair and nails
Umm Salamah radhiallahu anha related
that the Rasulullah salallahu alayhi wa sal-
lam said: "If you see the hill (new moon)
of Dhul-Hijjah, and any one of you wants
to make a sacrifce, then he should not cut
(anything) from his hair and his nails." and
in one narration he said: "...then he should
not take (cut) anything from his hair, nor
from his nails, until he performs the sac-
rifce." [Sahh Muslim]. Anyone who does
any of the above-mentioned acts deliber-
ately then he should seek forgiveness from
Allah, but there is no report for any com-
pensation.
If the hairs or nails cause harm to a person,
like a broken nail, or a hair on the place of
wound, then he is permitted to cut it.
If a person cuts his hairs or nails because
he did not intend to perform a sacrifce and
then later decides to slaughter an Udh-hi-
yah (in the ten days of Dhul-Hijjah), then he
should refrain from cutting them from the
time he intends to perform a sacrifce.

`Eid Adh-ha has unique spiritual, devo-
tional, educational, and social meanings. It
implants in the Muslim's heart the spirit of
sharing and caring. It has special rituals,
ethics, and values that could, if properly
observed, change a Muslim's affairs to the
better.
On the day of `Eid, a Muslim is recom-
mended by the Sunnah to have a shower
before going to the `Eid Prayer and wear
the best of his or her clothes. This refects
Islam's care for cleanliness and beauty. A
Muslim should be careful regarding his or
her appearance, dress, and personal hy-
giene.
In the early morning of the `Eid day, a Mus-
lim goes out to pray `Eid with his or her
fellow brothers and sisters. Every member
of the community should share the happi-
ness and attend the gathering of the `Eid.
Kids, women and men, young and elderly,
should go out for the `Eid Prayer. It is well-
known that even women in their menses
are allowed to go out and watch the `Eid
Prayer and celebration in the open areas
(al-musala) to share the community this
blessed time. This implants in the Muslim's
heart the sense of brotherhood and sister-
hood, unity, and togetherness.
After the `Eid Prayer, Muslims are advised
according to the Sunnahto change their
route on returning from the Prayer. J abir
ibn `Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with
him) reported that the Prophet (peace and
blessings be upon him) used to change his
routes on the day of `Eid. (Al-Bukhari) This
wonderful recommended practice aims at,
among others, giving the Muslim a chance
to meet more friends, neighbors, and com-
munity members in order to exchange `Eid
greetings and cement social ties.
Offering the udh-hiyyaha highly recom-
mended rite of `Eid Al- Adh-hamanifests
the great spirit of sharing and caring. All
members of the family are recommend-
ed to share and witness the udh-hiyyah
Prophet Muhammad (peace and bless-
ings be upon him) used to ask his beloved
daughter Fatimah to witness the udh-hi-
yyah. It was reported that the Prophet said
to his daughter Fatimah,
"Watch your udh-hiyyah (while it is slaugh-
tered) as you are forgiven with the frst
drop of its blood." (Al-Bayhaqi)
Moreover, the desirable division of the udh-
hiyyah into three thirdsone third for the
family, another for relatives, and a third for
the pooris another brilliant example that
shows how far the Adh-ha day implants
love and care in the Muslims' hearts for
family, relatives, and for the whole society.
In the Muslim Ummah (community), no
one is ignored or
left alone, as eve-
ry member of the
Muslim community
should, not only,
take care of his or
her close family
and relatives but of
all fellow Muslims.
Many Qur'anic
verses and pro-
phetic hadiths
teach that Mus-
lims are brothers
and sisters, and it
is the established
duty of brothers
and sisters to look
after the needs of
each other. This
impressive lesson
of Adh-ha , should
be understood
and translated into
practice, could
help reform the
current conditions
of Muslims.
`Eid is a day for ex-
changing visits and
maintaining fam-
ily ties. Maintaining
ties of kinship is an
established duty
that every Muslim
should carry out.
`Eid is a golden
chance to bring the

family members together, and to visit one's
relatives, friends, and community mem-
bers. The `Eid day should not pass without
visiting, calling, or e-mailing one's relatives
and family members in order to exchange
`Eid greetings and cement family ties.
During a Ramadhan visit to the USA few
years ago, I knew about a "`Eid Party" to be
organized by the Islamic Center in Reno,
Nevada; a party that aims at bringing the
members of the community together to
share the `Eid spirit and happiness. I,
thereby, admired the idea and encouraged
all my friends to attend the `Eid party in or-
der to come closer to each other.
On the `Eid day, Muslims are recommend-
ed to engage in public takbir (saying Al-
lahu Akbar) in the masjids, market-places,
streets, etc. This `ibadah (act of worship)
connects Muslims spiritually and spreads
mercy, peace of mind, tranquility, and hap-
piness. Hearts and bodies, therefore, enjoy
`Eid rituals and celebrations. People meet,
care for, and greet one another, and hearts
fnd peace and blessings in praising and
worshipping Allah, Most High.
`Eid is a day on which a Muslim should
bring himself or herself closer to Allah by
means of doing good deedssuch as
Prayers, caring for the poor and the needy,
visiting the sick people, helping those who
are in need, etc.and refraining from evil
practices such harming people and sever-
ing ties of kinship.
In short, `Eid Al- Adh-ha is a model for the
Muslim community which maintains love,
care, brotherhood and sisterhood, beau-
ty, and solidarity. `Eid has signifcant so-
cial, educational, devotional, and spiritual
messages that Muslims should grasp and
translate into a complete way of life.

Stakeholders asked to cooperate to improve
education standards
Muslim leaders, scholars, educationists
and professionals in the country have
been urged to come together and put in
place long term strategic plans to effec-
tively address challenges faced by Mus-
lims in education sector.
At the same time, the Muslim leadership
was also called upon to explore more av-
enues and be at forefront in supporting
education endeavours in the Muslim com-
munity to solve low enrolment trends and
mould Muslim students into better and re-
sponsible citizens who can serve the com-
munity and nation at large.
These calls were made by the Umma Uni-
versity vice chancellor Prof Shaukat Ab-
dulrazak who said that while there was an
improvement in the performance of Muslim
schools in national examinations, it is re-
grettable that the overall transition rate of
Muslim students from secondary schools,
universities and other higher institutions of
learning were still at a low level.
We have more than 60 public and private
universities which include the Muslim-
owned Umma University and the enrol-
ment rate of Muslim students stands at 4
percent. There is need for Muslims to take
advantage of these opportunities to en-
sure that more students join higher learn-
ing institutions. The glass is half full, we
need to fll it, he said.
Speaking during the offcial launch of the
Africa Education and Development Trust
(AEDT) website at the weekend, Prof
Shaukat called for more educational semi-
nars and workshops to sensitize parents
and students on the importance of educa-
tion and provide guidance on career se-
lection for students while stressing that
more out-reach programmes are needed
to enlighten Muslims on the importance
and need to participate in education.
In his address, the director of consortium
of national health research Abdulhamid
Swaleh said there is need for Muslims to
engage in soul searching process for solu-
tions to address challenges faced by the
community in education sector through
consultation with their county government
authorities.
He further urged Muslims to play their role
in matters pertaining to education in order
to improve the education standards in the
community.
Speaking at the event, the Alim High
School director Ahmed Yusuf called on
Muslims to invest more in education by
establishing more schools to improve on
education standards in the community
through to universities.
On her part, Fatuma Saman, an education-
ist and a commissioner with Independent
Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) spoke
on the predicament which Muslim female
students were facing in public universities
saying that many have been forced to pull
out from the institutions due the unfriendly
Islamic environment. She explained that
the policy where male students are al-

Muslim residents of Mpeketoni in Lamu
County are protesting against a private
developer who is said to have grabbed six
acre piece of land set aside for the con-
struction of a mosque. Consequently, the
Mpeketoni Muslim Community (MMC) has
called on the National Land Commission
to intervene and help them recover their
grabbed land.
The community maintains that it is the
rightful owner of the land which was al-
located to Muslims by the government in
1994.Chairman of Lamu West Inter-faith
Peace Forum Ibrahim Shahibu said MMC
has administered the land for the past two
decades until the private developer illegally
acquired the property.
''Mpeketoni Muslim Community has all the
necessary documents to prove and show it
owns the land.We are requesting the Na-
tional Land Commission to investigate to
establish the circumstance under which the
land was grabbed and take actions against
those involved in the illegal process,'' said
Shahibu.
The group further noted that the private
developer had already put structures on
the fve acres of land leaving only one acre
piece of land. The Muslim community reiter-
ated that they will stand frm to oppose the
grabbing of the land and vowed to protect
the property from grabbers.

Maqeel Yakub Mangia is a three-year old
boy diagnosed with Wiskott Aldrich Syn-
drom, a rare genetic disease that develops
after birth. The doctors recommended he
be seen abroad as they have exhausted all
expertise in Kenya.
Doctors in India and UK recommended
a bone marrow transplant as a possible
cure for the syndrome. The procedure in
India was less costly but none of his family
members bone marrow matched.
In the UK they are able to use the stem
cells of his parents to match it to Baby
Maqeel. This increases the success rate
of the procedure to 80%. The procedure
is planned to be made at Great Ormond
Street Hospital in London.
The cost of the procedure is GBP
621,000.00 (Over Sh 90,000,000). A fun-
draising function is planned to be held at
the Highridge Primary School on October
12 to help raise the amount. The function
will include various family and children ac-
tivities.

Welfare of Our Ummah
In the early years of Islam, Zakat, Sadaqa and Awqaf ( religious
endowments) played a large role in society - not only in poverty
alleviation, but in the building of infrastructure and provision of
social services. In the early years of Islam in this country, some
towns like Mombasa, Lamu and others were almost entirely
based on religious endowments - the real estate donated, with
the rent going towards charitable or social ends: educational and
health facilities. The endowments are credited as one of the rea-
sons for the Golden Age of Islamic civilization from the eighth
to the 13th centuries.
But due to colonization, the stagnation of Muslim institutions,
mismanagement of `awqaf and the inability of their laws to adapt
to changing times, these charitable traditions lost their central
place in the organization of society. The potential is still tremen-
dous but in most countries, it is not being used to the potential
or entirely lost its meaning. In the Malaysian state of Johor, for
example, the Zakat authority allows funds to be spent on student
loans for tertiary education and Universities.
Feeding the indigents and helping orphans are encouraged re-
peatedly in the Holy Quran and have thus become preferred
forms of Zakat. Building mosques has been a popular form of
Sadaqa, largely due to the Prophet Muhammads (S.A.W) say-
ing that he who helps build a mosque will have a castle built for
him in heaven. Ummah Foundation with other Muslim Organisa-
tions have at times struggled to convince donors to support in-
tangible activities like capacity-building or empowerment, over
these more tangible causes. The focus is to build the future that
strongly appeals to every Muslim to do something about it now.
Around ourselves, there is an increased awareness that if Zakat
and Sadaqa distribution and management is made effective, we
can bring revolutions in terms of development - not only for the
Muslims, but rest of the people around this country. The concept
of One Shilling Foundation was born from this basis. As Muslims,
we are raised with the good culture that you have to pay Zakat
and Sadaqa. The rich just go to the poor people on the streets
and give them money and they feel that theyre fulflled. To our
philosophy this is not the answer to the prevalent poverty in our
midst. Instead of giving money to the poor on the streets or or-
phans, we should try to support them in more strategic ways,
empowerment and mainstream aid activities.
Ummah Foundation appeals and is trying to change the culture
of giving among the donors, encouraging them to take more in-
terest in how the money they give is spent and whether it cre-
ates any lasting change. The lasting change comes in terms of
education- where lives of people are transformed, building health
facilities that can cater for our interests, livelihood empowerment
programs and long terms plans that will be create solid fall backs.
The challenges facing Muslims in this country are of all facets
and the only way we can counteract them is through the strong
force of Unity. Unity that will help us work together for the com-
mon good. We should have one central Zakat or Sadaqa collect-
ing body that is entrusted with the trust and mandate of collecting
our charity funds in one pool. From that universal pool we can be
able to fulfl more than what our dreams can perceive.
