MATLAMAT (GOALS):

To provide depth understanding of conceptual topics of fundamental hydrology, hydrological cycle,
precipitation, surface runoff, evapotranspiration and infiltration, stream gauging, hydrograph analysis, flood
control and groundwater.

SINOPSIS (SYNOPSIS):

Hydrology is the study of the earth water including their movement, chemistry and distribution. In civil
engineering, hydrology applies scientific knowledge and mathematical principles to solve water-related
problems in society regarding quantity, quality and availability. This course introduces students to physical
processes of hydrology, measurement and collection of data, model conceptualization, data analysis and
design synthesis. Scope of study includes Basic Concept of Hydrology: introduction to hydrology,
hydrologic cycle and water balance, hydrological data; Precipitation: introduction, rainfall depth and
intensity, precipitation data analysis; Evaporation, Transpiration and Infiltration: factors of meteorology,
evaporation, transpiration and evapotranspiration, methods of evapotranspiration assessment of Penman and
Thornthwaite, infiltration capacity, factors of infiltration i.e. infiltration index; Characteristics and Modelling
of Surface Runoff: catchment area, catchment characteristics, river flow determination, intensity-duration-
frequency curve, runoff determination, peak flow estimation; Analysis of Hydrograph: runoff components,
hydrograph separation, unit hydrograph, application of unit hydrograph; Flood Control: flood and river
control, flood frequency analysis, level-pool routing; Groundwater: introduction, one-dimensional
groundwater steady flow, well hydraulic.

HASIL PEMBELAJARAN (LEARNING OUTCOMES):

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
1. Apply hydrologic and hydraulic systems to the solution of a variety of problems in hydrology
engineering. (C4, PLO1)
2. Produce solutions for water related problems in the society. (P4, PLO2)
3. Display effective communication skills within group in solving the given problems. (A3, PLO3)

TUGASAN / PROJEK (ASSIGNMENT / PROJECT):

Students are required to form a group (maximum of five students per group) at the beginning of semester.
Each group is required to do stream gauging measurement. This method of discharge measurement consists
essentially of measuring the area of cross-section of the river at a selected section called the gauging site and
measuring the velocity of flow through the cross-sectional area. The gauging site location will be given later.
Additional tasks/assignments to support this project are streamflow data collection for a week on that site
and the unit hydrograph analysis from the data. The completed report will be assessed and all assessments
are based on projects rubric.
