To Whom It May Concern:

I am happy to recommend Amit Barman for a SMART Scholarship. Although he

has had only one class with me, it is his only graduate class thus far, and he felt
that a recent reference from graduate work would be more valuable than an
older reference from his undergraduate work.

Mr. Barman was in my graduate Java programming class this immediate past
semester, Fall of 2009. The class was intense, with significant programming
assignments every week. It was targeted at graduate students majoring in
Computer Science. Mr. Barman’s work was clearly in the top tenth of the class,
and he also contributed several detailed helps to other students in our on-line
technical support forum.

Mr. Barman brings a background and a depth of knowledge in computer

hardware, software and networking that is far above the average graduate
student. His work experience in the field adds significantly to his interaction with
other students. I left Bell Labs ten years ago to teach at NJIT, and I am
dependent on students who are currently working to stay in touch with full time,
active, professional software development. I tend to get about four of five
students each semester whose substantial current professional activity gives me
information about the tools in use in the field and the knowledge required to stay
current. Mr. Barman is one of the best resources I have had recently.

In addition to programming ability, Mr. Barman is an excellent communicator,

and seems to be quite competent in research. I recommend him without
reservation.

I apologize for the ad-hoc character of this letterhead. It is the end of the
semester and I am working from home. I will not return to campus before the
deadline for submission of this letter. Your email requested the note on
letterhead and I was able to get our department letterhead from our secure site,
but I do not have any postscript editing tools at home to enter the phone
numbers and email address. I am preparing this in MS Word on an Apple iMac,
signing it with a script font, and then converting it to postscript with a conversion
tool.
