PhD/Postdoc Positions in Metabolomics and Systems Biology

The research group Dynamic Control of Metabolic Networks is looking for PhD students and postdocs, to
start in the beginning of 2015. We are an Emmy Noether research group at the Max Planck Institute for
Terrestrial Microbiology and at the LOEWE center for synthetic microbiology (SYNMIKRO) in Marburg,
Germany. Our group combines metabolomics and computational modeling to investigate how bacteria control
their metabolic networks dynamically. We ask which mechanisms for dynamic control evolved naturally and
which synthetic control circuits could improve production strains in biotechnology.

The projects will focus on acquiring and analyzing metabolomics data with a high-performance mass
spectrometry system. Depending on the interest and background of the student/postdoc, specific projects can
be more molecular biology or computationally oriented. A background in either biology, biotechnology,
chemical engineering or computer science is expected. Experience in one or more of the following fields is
beneficial: molecular biology techniques, mass spectrometry, metabolism and computational modeling.

The Max Planck Institute for Terrestrial Microbiology and the neighboring Philipps University of Marburg form
one of the largest clusters of microbiology research in Europe and offer a stimulating and interdisciplinary
research environment. Within the LOEWE center for synthetic microbiology (SYNMIKRO), more than 100
scientists from the Max Planck Institute and Philipps University explore the foundations of synthetic
microbiology.

As an equal opportunity employer, the Max Planck Society is committed to employing more individuals with
disabilities. We therefore actively encourage individuals with disabilities to apply. We also seek to increase the
percentage of female employees in areas where they are under-represented. Qualified women are therefore
strongly encouraged to apply.

Applications should be sent by e-mail to hannes.link@imsb.biol.ethz.ch. Please include your CV, a one-page
cover letter describing your research interest, and the names and e-mail addresses of academic referees.

Applications received by September 30, 2014, will be given priority.
