etc3, and be sure you choose gal$ani<ed or coated hardware to a$oid rust3 (e sure you
finishing materials and products are suitable for outdoor use as well3

process easier or to allow for less e%pensi$e purchasing of materials! Read through the
entire set of instructions and all comments before beginning this project3 &f you print out
or sa$e plans, be sure to chec in on my site to be sure you ha$e the most up to date set of

started, tools and techni#ues3 &f you are unfamiliar with the finishing process, $isit my

for ages3 "dhere to all safety standards and guidelines, and be sure you follow safety

Step 7
Create your LegsA @se your Table Saw with a Dado (lade to create a >/4: % >/4: Dado on
two adjacent sides of each leg as shown below3 Bou can also create these groo$es using
the table saw without a dado blade, by simply setting your depth to >/4: and running your
post across it a number of times until you ha$e a >/4: groo$e3 Bou can also use either a
circular saw, or jig saw by setting your depth to >/4: and running it along your post a
series of times in a row until you ha$e car$ed out a >/4: gap3 " router with a straight bit
or one part of a mortise and tenon bit will also wor!
Step +
Leg LayoutA The diagram below shows the layout of the legs once you ha$e created your
groo$es3
Step >
"ttach the Side PanelsA Bour boards should be pretty snug in a rug in your groo$es and
you may need to pound them down into place using a mallet3 This is purposeful so you
don6t ha$e so much wiggle room that it is difficult to secure them in place3 Cnce you
slide all 4 boards into place on a side, you will secure them by nailing or screwing
directly through leg on the shallow side that remains after the groo$es you created3 'or an
e%ample, clic here to $iew the inspiration piece for this project, you can see the fasteners
when you enlarge the picture3
Step 4
"ttach the 'ront and (acA Do this in the same manner you did for the sides, use a mallet
or something to hammer them down into place and then screw or nail them in through the
front and bac edges of the legs3
Step ,
'asten the (ottom in PlaceA 2otch out +: s#uares from the corners of the outside bottom
panels3 "ttach the bottom panels to the bottom most front, bac and side panels using
nails or screws3 &f you use screws be sure to countersin and you will lea$e 7/4: on either
side of the center bottom panel which will aid in draining for the planter bo%3 &f you need
additional draining you can simply drill holes along the bottom in the locations you see
fit3 Don6t get too cra<y and create a planter bo% of swiss cheese, but be sure the water you
put into the bo% will drain out fairly well or you will croa your plants lie & typically do!
Step 5
"dd the Top TrimA /iter the corners for the most professional appearance and secure to
the front, bac, sides, and legs using nails or screws3
