Read through the entire set of instructions and all comments before beginning this project3 &f you print out or sa$e plans, be sure to chec in on my site to be sure you ha$e the most up to date set of plans, as & occasionally update things for ease of building or buying3 &f you are new to building, read through the ;)TT&2; ST"RT)D section and other articles found under the (@&LD tab in the menu on my site, it has $aluable information about how to get started, tools and techni#ues3 &f you are unfamiliar with the finishing process, $isit my 'inishing school for some tips and trics for painting lie a pro and for special finishing practices3 @se glue to secure your joints and Consider Painting or Staining indi$idual sections prior to assembling3 This maes the paint application $irtually flawless3 Coat with a spray on Poly or =ipe on Poly to protect your finish and your piece and it will last for ages3 "dhere to all safety standards and guidelines, and be sure you follow safety protocol throughout your build3 &f you are unsure about whether you are building safely, run a #uic online search for the tool or techni#ue you are using, or contact me $ia email or post to the forum before you mo$e ahead3 /y contact info can be found in the menu of my site3 Step 7 Create your LegsA @se your Table Saw with a Dado (lade to create a >/4: % >/4: Dado on two adjacent sides of each leg as shown below3 Bou can also create these groo$es using the table saw without a dado blade, by simply setting your depth to >/4: and running your post across it a number of times until you ha$e a >/4: groo$e3 Bou can also use either a circular saw, or jig saw by setting your depth to >/4: and running it along your post a series of times in a row until you ha$e car$ed out a >/4: gap3 " router with a straight bit or one part of a mortise and tenon bit will also wor! Step + Leg LayoutA The diagram below shows the layout of the legs once you ha$e created your groo$es3 Step > "ttach the Side PanelsA Bour boards should be pretty snug in a rug in your groo$es and you may need to pound them down into place using a mallet3 This is purposeful so you don6t ha$e so much wiggle room that it is difficult to secure them in place3 Cnce you slide all 4 boards into place on a side, you will secure them by nailing or screwing directly through leg on the shallow side that remains after the groo$es you created3 'or an e%ample, clic here to $iew the inspiration piece for this project, you can see the fasteners when you enlarge the picture3 Step 4 "ttach the 'ront and (acA Do this in the same manner you did for the sides, use a mallet or something to hammer them down into place and then screw or nail them in through the front and bac edges of the legs3 Step , 'asten the (ottom in PlaceA 2otch out +: s#uares from the corners of the outside bottom panels3 "ttach the bottom panels to the bottom most front, bac and side panels using nails or screws3 &f you use screws be sure to countersin and you will lea$e 7/4: on either side of the center bottom panel which will aid in draining for the planter bo%3 &f you need additional draining you can simply drill holes along the bottom in the locations you see fit3 Don6t get too cra<y and create a planter bo% of swiss cheese, but be sure the water you put into the bo% will drain out fairly well or you will croa your plants lie & typically do!
