COLORADO BtOOl Dear Christian Friends: Most of you have received one or two copies of "The Belem Bulletin", a quarterly report which several of us working in this area have begun to publish. If not, write to our Forwarding Agent for it, so you can see as well as read what is going on here. The first two weeks of January we attended a Missionary Conference in Anapolis, a city southwest of Brasilia, which was very helpful to us, and we trust will be to the work of Christ here in Brjiail^'Wiis year. The Bible Correspondaifce S^ta^;Cour3e. which the group working here in Belem has started has nearly 600 Enrolled,- ;::3iie course has 10 Lessons. Avery nice Certificate is given to those whp finii3Et^<"' Already several people who were not connected with the church in any,-way"^^ve begun to study, not only this course, but others which we teach personally. We have great hopes for faster progress of the church in this way. In January, Frank Horn, Stan Wohlenhaus, Clint Thomas, and I made a trip part way down the Brasilia highway, fqr. ^ mles, and saw several good opportunities there for work to be done. We hope oIl^s'wilT come here to work in order to expand more, and that we will have a way to branch out soon. Write to us in Brazil for a 3 page resume ot^that trip, which you might find interesting (Air Mail Postage 150 for i ounce). . Discipleis being used in the churches for their progress here. Classes have begun for the^irien of three churches, two here in Icoaracx where we live, to train better leaders. Already some of them have begun to preach and teach. We want to give them more instruction to do this better. Some have been removed from the churches, too, during the past year, in accordance with the Bible*s teaching. Both of these-methods-^jE^-diacipllPo have strengthened the churches. Some good workers and preachers have come from the I^a Bible Lpat^^ but the results have not been what we hoped for; thus, the progrsmf^iW Saahller than it was. We finished the past year with only^,.t^e students. Classes have begun in March with three ^'studying classes at ni^t to allow church people to take advantage of thsii. Also, this way the students are entirely on their own, not depending on us for housing, etc, T14JF"i'^^nter time, 100 miles south of the equator; but in southem Brazil it is season: 19 inches in January, and 20,7 inches in February. Vacation Bible Schools were held in February, with an average of ^.in the Outeiro Road Church, and about 60 in the Agulha Church, both in Icoaracx whe^'wl"work. BAYLESS CAIXA postal 926 BELEM, PARA, BRAZIL SEPTEMBER 1965 - NEV/S LETTER rORWAROINB AGENT J FRED BAYLESS 2010 East ISTH STREET PUEBLO, COLORAOO BIOOI Dear Friends in Christ: We're in the middle to a Revival Meeting in the Agulha Church in Icoaraci, vhere we live. This Church is beginning to show progress, after several years of troubles. I'm writing in the middle of the Meeting, and we've had increase in attendance eveiy night, with a high so far of 62. There has This month I will make a trip, the Lord Willing, with Jim Moreland, about 700 miles down the highway to Brasilia for a three-day preaching meeting. We are planning to take along Tom Crowell of Crowell, Texas, who should arrive from the U. S. soon to visit this field. It should take three days for us to reach our destination. The road is gravel or worse most of the way, but passable with care. A neighbor of ours, a young woman who has been a Christian about three years, has been sick for about a week. We put her in the hospital three days ago, and she is im proving slowly, but has many things wrong with her. We don't have the money to do things like this, but couldn't just say, "Well, that's too bad!" We haven't made any appeals for things like this, and don't plan to emphasize it, as there are medical facilities where we live. But if any of you would like to help, you may do so it will be very much appreciated. The hospital bill will be about S75.00. The young woman has four children, one about a year old. Her husband is not a Christian, We thank God for the faithful men in the other Church vre work with here. Thsy are carrying on a successful work in the interior about 50 miles from here without any help from us. The Church pays the expenses. The men preach and teach. We have two men who are good at this: one has been a Christian about a year, and the other about four years. Joanne is growing up fast, and can walk pretty well now. She tries to talk, but doesn't say anything recognizable! Next month (October 12th) she will be one year old. Write to us, and we'll send you a picture of her. (Write to Brazil address above). But please send all gifts for the work to our Forwarding Agent in the U, S. Several of the Missionaries who work together here have been trying to get a partly finished brick house ready for a new missionary family. We feel that by having it we can help prevent the loss of new families who come here, and are shocked at first by the change in culture and living standards. Work is going very slowly on it, because we do not have the money to finish it. We don't mind at all asking for help to finish this, because of the contribution it will make to the work here. After about three years, it will make a financial return to the work. We are trying to get the Churches self-sufficient, so that we will be free to work in planting new churches. Plans are being made for this in the city of Belem and on the Belea-Brasilia highway. A large tent is ready for this work. The MissiOT^nes..hpp^.J^C) have an airplane before long too, for better transportation to remote areas. Your prayers ^^TYlnSiciS support are what keep us here to teach the truth of Christ! We are thankful for your part. Please ask God to guide us to do ours. P3: Thanks to all who helped on the New Car Fund! Still a need. The new car is proving a blessing to the work, as we just have to get around! Yours in Christ, David M. Bayless
