Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Welcome to “Catholics Come Home Joliet!” You may be aware that the Diocese of Joliet
shares this important project with the Archdiocese of Chicago and the Diocese of Rock-
ford, and I am pleased that you have found your way to our website. Perhaps you have
seen one of the many television spots we are sponsoring during December and January
in English, Spanish and Polish. If not, you can view them on this website!

In a sense, the Lord Jesus is constantly calling all of us to “Come Home.” I like to reflect
on the number of times he issued similar invitations: “Come, and you will see!” “Come,
follow me!” “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men!” “Come to me, all you
who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” And to St. Peter, when he saw Je-
sus walking on the water and asked if he could do the same, Jesus answered confidently, “Come!”

As your bishop, with Jesus I say to you, “Come! Come see with the eyes of faith. Come follow in Jesus’ footsteps. Come
help gather more disciples for the Lord. Come find rest and peace. Come learn of the Lord’s compassion and forgive-
ness of sin. Come find how God’s grace helps us do even what seems impossible!”

If you have been away from the Church for any reason and are hoping to draw close once again, to you I say, “Welcome
home! We need you.” If you are an active Catholic but would like to deepen your roots in the Church, to you I say, “Come
grow in the Lord!” If you are not Catholic but would like to learn more about our Faith, to you I say, “Come in!”
This website offers resources and links which I hope you will find helpful, as well as contact information for all the par-
ishes of our diocese and our diocesan offices. We want to be servants of the Lord in helping him extend his loving invita-
tion to you. He wants everyone to be in his flock, and as Shepherd of the flock, he wants us to take full advantage of
everything he gives us in the Church, especially the Holy Eucharist.

Come Home to the Catholic Church! You will be fed, strengthened, challenged and guided by the Lord Jesus himself
through all the spiritual gifts he has lovingly entrusted to the Church.

A Sign that Someone is Thinking

About Returning to the Catholic Church
The most common sign is when someone begins to ask
questions about God, good and evil, or the meaning of
life. A lot of people in our society have lost that sense of
meaning. They begin to ask, “What is my life about? Why
do I do what I do? Is there any purpose in all of this?” As
a parent, spouse, sibling or friend, your role is not to re-
store that meaning, but to help the person find meaning
for him or herself. You can do that by active listening.

Non-threatening comments such as, “It sounds like you’re

really searching...” will encourage the person to talk in a
more open manner. You don’t have to offer solutions or
answers. Offer your opinion only when asked.

Home for Christmas and 2010

As we come to the close of the Advent Season, we are reminded by the world that Christmas is here! Christmas can
be an exciting and fulfilling time for us. We know that the holy season brings certain feelings of loneliness as well. We
miss those who have died. We walk with those who are sick. We miss those who will not be Home for Christmas. We
pray for those who have lost a job and struggle to meet the needs of their family.

As Church families we prepare for Christmas as well. We look forward in a special way to greet family members and pa-
rishioners who will be Home for Christmas. We also prepare to celebrate with those who seem to attend Church only at
Christmas, other holidays and our parish family who we see every Sunday.

Statistics tell us that a large majority of those who do not attend Church regularly would return if they were asked. Rea-
sons for staying away are many. Some simply have gotten out of the habit of attending and a little extra sleep is nice.
For others there might be misunderstandings of Church teachings and policies. Some might feel they are unwelcome to
attend due to invalid marriages or other similar issues. Others might have been hurt by the Church, words of a priest, a
parishioner or our parish family. Some might have a fear of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Others might have strug-
gles with their faith and may not know how to come for help. Some might feel embarrassed to return after a period of
absence. Lack of attendance does not mean they no longer think of the Church or that they do not wish to return.
Sometimes they simply need to know they are missed and have a graceful opportunity to return.

Part of our Christian Mission at Christ the King is Evangelization. We are to reach out in faith and welcome others. I
would like us to consider an Evangelization project, this Advent Season. I’m sure you know of someone who no longer
attends Church or does so infrequently. Perhaps you have heard someone speak of faith difficulties they might be hav-
ing. Certainly, the best thing to do is approach that person and let them know what you are feeling. Tell them you miss
them and would welcome their return. Offer to attend Church or a parish activity with them. Help them obtain any assis-
tance they might need from the Church, their parish community.

Take a few minutes to consider those you “miss” when you attend Church-our neighbors, our family. Let’s keep them in
your prayers. Consider how you might invite them to return. You might invite them by adapting part of this letter, send-
ing an e-mail, making a phone call or any of the number of creative ways of letting them know you’d be happy to see
them come Home for Christmas.

Perhaps you yourself have become more distant from the Church. Let me apologize for anything the Universal Church
and the particular church of our diocese, a priest, religious, deacon, staff member or I may have caused you not to be
interested. Feel free to contact me, to help you start the kind of dialogue that can heal the wounds.

Christ the King staff invites you home this Christmas Season and this New Year. This is a simply loving invitation. All
our present parishioners have the privilege to provide a welcome and open door to our family members. Christmas is
truly here when everybody’s home. Let us pray together that many come Home for Christmas and the new year of grace
2010. As we celebrate 50 years as parish community, let us continue to live by the grace of God that will keep this com-
munity strong for the many years to come. Let us pray that everyone who walks through the doors of Christ the King
may feel the warmth and welcome of this community we call Home.

Dear Parents of our Academy and Religious Education Families,

The parish staff and I are hoping you are having a peaceful Advent
Season. Don’t forget to plug into parish events throughout this holy
time.

Also use this time to bring your children back to weekly mass as a
family. Efforts are being made, and will show its fruit, in the ways
you become closer as a family this new year. If there are any ques-
tions you have about your faith and wish to talk to one of my staff
members, please contact me or drop by my office. We want to wel-
come everyone home to our Catholic faith traditions. If you know of
anyone who has fallen away from the church and the practice of the
faith, welcome them and embrace them this Christmas.

It is a joy for our staff to work with you and your children. I would like
to thank the staff for their dedication to the work of Christ and for you
as a family. You are in our thoughts and prayers this Advent Sea-
son. The staff of the parish office, religious education office , acad-
emy and clergy wish all of you a Blessed Christmas day and Sea-

Christ the King Parish

Simbang Gabi Novena Mass:

December 20 5:00pm
Simbang Gabi is a traditional Filipino Novena of masses
to help the faithful prepare spiritually for Christmas. It
was introduced into the Philippines in the 17th century
by the Spanish conquistadores. On the nine days lead-
ing up to Christmas, villagers gather to celebrate mass
before dawn so that farmers and fishermen can partici-
pate before the early start of their day's labor.

Simbang Gabi is a religious festival for all, Filipino and

non-Filipino. We hope that this will be one of may cultural activities that everyone can enjoy and participate in as prepa-
ration for Christmas. The Filipino Community of Christ the King Parish is inviting everyone to join us on Sunday, Dec.
20, 2009, in the celebration of "Simbang Gabi", one of the nine-days novena commemorating the birth of our Lord Jesus
Christ.

The "Simbang Gabi" (or night mass) is a Filipino tradition observed by both young and old. In this country this tradition is
celebrated in at least nine (9) parishes in every diocese. You will surely enjoy the Christmas songs in both Filipino and
English!

it will be sent to a soldier who is currently serving in
Iraq . You can't pick out who gets it, but it will go to a
member of the armed services with your personal greet-

Think of the impact on our soldiers if we could get eve-

Holy Hour for Year of the Priest
Join us on the second Thursday of the month at 7:00pm
as we pray a holy hour for our priests. Pope Benedict has
declared this current year as the “Year of the Priest”.

Did you know…
Simbang Gabi, the Filipino
tradition and novena of nine
masses before Christmas,
was introduced at Christ the
King after Father James Divorscak became pastor in
1994 by Sister Jocelyn Valdez, director of religious edu-
cation. After two years, Rory Villamin with the help of late
Deacon Rudy Molano, formed the DuPage Simbang Gabi
Cluster involving the Filipino communities from different
area churches. Bishop Joseph Imesch approved the no-
vena, celebrated in the evening, instead of at dawn as in
the Philippines, as a yearly event in the Diocese of Joliet.
Today, the Filipino community of Christ the King Parish is
committed to this yearly wonderful tradition in preparation
for the Advent Ssason and the birth of the Prince of
Peace.
The Christmas season has always been special at Christ
the King, and everyone became less sleep deprived in
1994. Soon after Father James Dvorscak was named
pastor, he moved up the celebration of Midnight Mass to
10:30 p.m. with Christmas carols and sacred music begin-
ning at 10 p.m. Father Jim also replaced the large creche
on the altar. This year, it seems Pope Benedict XVI ids
catching on to the Christ the King tradition!

6 Steps for a Good Confession

• Examine your conscience - what sins have you com-

mitted since your last good confession.
• Be sincerely sorry for your sins.
• Confess your sins to the priest.
• Make certain that you confess all your mortal sins and
the number of them.
• After your confession, do the penance the priest gives
to you.
• Pray daily for the strength to avoid the occasion of
sin, especially for those sins you were just absolved

Carnahan were in attendance. Jill Placey director of the
