These conce)ts3 and the de.ates re!ardin! these conce)ts3 4ill hel) /e exa/ine the dail0 ex)eriences of the + !enerations of 4o/en I studied. 2.1 2omen3s e4periences In understandin! the context of the :hinese Indonesian 4o/enCs citi<enshi) I 4ill use a historical )ers)ecti2e to anal0se the diJerent ex)eriences of citi<enshi) and .elon!in! that are ex)erienced .0 three !enerations of the :hinese 4o/en. The three !enerations are situated in diJerent )olitical situations and ti/es3 that inEuence ho4 the0 de=ne the/sel2es. The conce)ts of :iti<enshi) and identit0 are used to understand the co/)lexit0 of :hinese 4o/enCs life. The de.ate on the conce)ts of citi<enshi) and nationalit0 not onl0 focuses on the notion of ci2ic and )olitical )ossi.ilities or le!al conce)ts. In fact3 it is /ore co/)lex. In the context of :hinese Indonesians3 /isreco!nition3 /ar!inali<ation and e2en 2iolence are all )art of their histor0 throu!h diJerent re!i/es. This exclusion in their e2er0da0 life aJects their sense of .elon!in!3 their identit0 and social relations to others. 'ssi/ilation3 thou!ht to .e a 4a0 to inte!rate and ada)t to a social and cultural fra/e4or$3 is a )ro.le/ .ecause the :hinese )ositions and status ha2e .een de.ated .et4een ethnic !rou)s Qthe :hinese and others3 and a/on! the :hinese the/sel2es. Then ca/e the conce)t of >dual nationalit0?3 a le!ac0 of continuin! :olonial inEuence in the ne4 state in 4hich their lo0alt0 to the state 4as Kuestioned. In this sense3 the :hinese )osition is 2ulnera.le 4ith re!ard to the state and societ0. :iti<enshi) is not onl0 a.out accessin! their ri!hts and doin! their duties .ut it is also a.out e/otional connections. It is a.out su.;ecti2it0 and /e/ories. ence3 to understand the co/)lexit0 of this citi<enshi) re!ardin! the :hinese 4o/enCs contexts3 I 4ill use 6uth ListerCs conce)t of citi<enshi). She ar!ues citi<enshi) is a contested and a contextual conce)t. The conce)t of citi<enshi) identit0 /eans /e/.ershi) of a co//unit0O it is .et4een indi2idual and state3 indi2idual and co//unit0.
