An image of a city

A city is a living entity which grows with time. It is a part of human settlement and
provides habitat to all living beings, but primarily it is based on growing human needs. This
varies from basic needs of livelihood like food clothing and shelter to miscellaneous
requirements of education, employment and recreation. It is a hub of opportunities

City evolution is based on the evolution of society. Along with physical aspect it also
relates to socio-cultural and economical aspect .For example Jaipur is known as PINK
CITY is still imaged as pink by the tourists, but for the residents (like me) its Pink(beige)
colour is just till the walled city. Still it is a sense of pride that a city has such a huge
historical backing, also it has retained its cultural identity and growing with human
aspirations.

It is a beautiful amalgam of past, present and future.

Walled city was built in 1727 on a 9 grid pattern providing beautiful hierarchy of streets
that is still catering 3 lakh population originally designed for 40000 population. The grid
pattern is also being followed outside the walled city that favours traffic movement. Not
only development but environment is taken into consideration while planning the city that
includes topography as well as climate of the place.

For this was my perception of a city, everyone has its own perception. The royal city is rich
in historical buildings and monuments and is well equipped with jewellery making and
other crafts which is boon to the city. But since every coin has two sides a city cannot be
viewed in only one dimension. The other dimension incudes increasing congestion,
change in weather due to heat island effect. So there is an urgent need to check the
disorganised development that is taking place and one has to consider the spaces for the
people who migrate in city for better job opportunities but unfortunately they become slum
dwellers and squat on the government land..

Cities since their beginning of time ,have embodied the dreams and aspirations of a
society.

Its not just a physical entity but a living,a breathing cell of a nation. It is a crucial part of
national wealth,a generator of skills and development and a centre of hope.

For the city which we experience is much more then a physical plant, it is also a set of
powerful mythic image of values ..that gives sustenance and enrichment to our lives.
