GE3244 Fundamentals of Petroleum Exploration.

This is a closed book test.

COMPULSORY SECTION A (10 minutes, 25 marks)
Interpret and label this seismic section (attached) in terms of the petroleum system. Where
would you drill the first exploration well?

You will be provided with the seismic section at the test.
OPTIONAL SECTION B (30 minutes, 75 marks)
On the answer sheet provided, answer 3 questions (10 minutes, 25 marks each) out of the following
6 options:
You will be offered 6 options from the following:
1. Draw and annotate a diagram that illustrates depth and temperature versus relative amount
of petroleum formed due to burial in the oil and gas kitchens.
2. Draw and annotate an H/C vs O/C Van Krevelin diagram, indicating the various petroleum
molecules, the various types of kerogen, and how they evolve during thermal maturation.
3. Make a list naming the common well logging techniques and list their uses.
4. Write down a definition of three types of unconformity and draw sketches to illustrate them.
5. On a labelled sketch, illustrate how the rock cycle works.
6. Draw labelled sketches that illustrate the first 5 Principles of Stratigraphy.
7. Draw a labelled diagram that illustrates how siliciclastic rocks are classified.
8. Construct a block diagram that illustrates the environments of deposition of siliciclastics on
land and in the sea.
9. Draw a series of diagrams that illustrate the different stages of transgressions and
regressions.
10. Construct a diagram that illustrates Dunhams classification of limestones.
