MAJOR SOCIAL INSTITUTION

Social institution are established or standardized patterns of rule-behavior which


functions to satisfy basic social needs by providing an ordered framework linking the
individual to the larger culture.

The social institution are
1. Education
2. Religion
3. Economics
4. Government
1. FAMILY a socially defined set of relationships between at least two people
related by birth, marriage, adoption, or, in some definitions, long -standing
ties of intimacy.
Family is smallest social institution with the unique function or producing and
rearing the young.
Role of the family - is to ensure responsible citizens, preserve society, and
balance the desires of individual liberty with the demands of community
responsibility.
Function of the family include socializing children, regulating sexual behavior
and reproduction, distributing resources, providing social support.
1. EDUCATION a formal process in which knowledge, skills, and values are
systematically transmitted from one individual or group to another.
Role of Education - introduced league tables in order to provide greater
choice for parents. By comparing school results, parents can make a more
informed decision as to which school is the best one for their children.
Function of Education include transmitting shared values and beliefs,
transmitting specific knowledge and skills, sorting individuals based on skill
and establishing social control over youths.
2. Religion it is a system of beliefs and rituals that serves to bind people
together through shared worship, thereby creating a social group. It assumes
the existence of the supernatural.
Role of religion is to remind republication citizens of their duties to and
reliance upon god.
Function of religion include providing meaning for life, reinforcing social
norms, strengthening social bonds and marking status changes.
3. ECONOMIC a branch of social science that deals with the production and
services and their management.
Role of economic has variously been defined as a social science that involves
itself in the study and analysis of production, distribution as well as
consumption of goods and services.
Function of economic include production and distribution of goods,
assignment of individuals to different social roles such as occupations.
4. Government is an institution entrusted with making and enforcing the rules
of a society as well as with regulating relations with other societies. In order
to be considered a government, a ruling body must be recognized as such by
the people it purports to govern. A person or group that considers itself the
leading body of a society has no power if the members of the society do not
recognize the person or group as such.
Role of government believe that no government can exist in peace, except
such laws are framed and held inviolate as will secure to each individual the
free exercise of conscience, the right and control of property, and the
protection of life"
Function of government - is to remain in power. Governments do not
relinquish their authority unless compelled to do so. Many of the actions of
politicians and civil servants can be explained by the need to maintain and
enhance their power
