2
Introduction
Piping systems are like arteries and veins which carry
The life blood of modern industrial civilization and provide
protection of life and property.
3
Introduction
Pipe lines play major role in following industrial area
Power Plant
Refinery industries
Chemical plants
Paper mill
Food processing
Fire protection
4
Introduction
Pipe: Pipe can be defined as pressure tight cylinder used to
convey fluids.
Piping: Pipe sections when connected with fitting ,valves
and other mechanical equipment/component and
properly supported by hangers and supports
called piping.

Piping Arrangements
Purpose: Piping cost form a significant portion of a plants total
investments, the constructions , operation and maintenance
provisions that will optimize these cost are an important aspect in
design process.
7
Piping Arrangements
General Routing Criteria:There are some criteria that
optimize piping cost and proper functioning of system.
Piping from source to destination should be as short as
possible with minimum change in direction.
Piping should not hinder any normal passage way also should
not encroach any equipment maintenance space.
Preferable
Not Preferable
8
General Routing Criteria
Valves ,strainer, instruments on pipe should be easily accessible if
needed provide separate access platform.
Specific requirements of straight length of pipe for some
components to be maintained ,like for flow orifice we need to
provide 15 D straight pipe length at up stream of orifice and 5D
pipe at down steam of orifice.
Example of Straight length requirement for Flow Orifice
9
General Routing Criteria
For pipe line which shall carry liquid we have to make sure
that all filled air allowed to vent out of the line when line is filled
to achieve this a vent connection is provided on top most point
of pipe line.
Also arrangement is kept in the pipe line so that liquid can be
drain out if required.

General Routing Criteria

Not required
Not required
Do not provide unnecessary drain and vents
11
General Routing Criteria
To avoid air pockets in
pump suction line use
top flat eccentric
reducer that will
prevents chances of
air pockets formations.
Top flat eccentric reducer
12
General Routing Criteria
Check feasibility for installation of pipe supports and make full
utilization of existing structural and concrete.
Preferably use long radius elbows where elbow are required
