AERCO Gas-Fired Heaters and Hydronic Boilers
Design Choices and Design Tips

Physical Layout
Look at position and access relative to other equipment and piping.
Consider positioning heater to minimize length of flue vent.
Ensure separation from source of chlorine or corrosive chemicals.
Check wall, overhead and service clearance.
See boiler application guide for minimum space requirement. For ease of maintenance, use more than the minimum clearance between units.
Install external regulator at least 3 ft. upstream of heater.
Review gas regulator specification to see if horizontal installation is required.
Do not block access to heater with gas pipe, air duct, or wiring.

Flue Gas Venting
Choose side wall or vertical discharge.
Specify Heat-Fab AL 29-4C vent pipe which will give extended service life.
Slope horizontal vent pipe down toward boiler/heater for condensate drainage.
Consider effect of condensation at vent exit. Do not locate vent discharge over walkways, windows, or paved areas, if possible
Insulate vent pipe up to about 7 ft. height for personnel protection.
Insulate flue piping through walls & floors, or specify recommended clearances.
Multiple units:
Vent individually, if possible.
Allow 3 ft. center to center spacing for roof or wall vents.
If common vent header is required, contact C. J . Michelson Company for recommendations.
CAD drawings of vent pipe system are available when Heat-Fab is specified.

Flue Gas Condensate
Use polypropylene tubing to an appropriate drain. Clear tubing will show condition of condensate.

Combustion Air Ducting
Choose sealed combustion or wall louvers. Consider:
Additional fuel savings with sealed combustion.
Need to isolate gas-fired heating equipment from refrigerant gases, or bear cost of refrigerant sensor/burner shutdown device.
Building aesthetics.
For sealed combustion, specify inlet air adapter for each unit.

Water Piping
Contractor must thoroughly flush system before start-up.

Gas pressure
For new gas service, install the meter as closely as possible to appliances to minimize user piping costs.
Learn range from user or gas company.
Gas pressure to inlet side of AERCO supplied external gas regulator must be no greater than 14" W. C. with standard Maxitrol regulator, or
up to 10 psi with optional regulators. A minimum of 11" W. C. gas pressure to the regulator at maximum firing rate is required for
proper operation.
Note that the Maxitrol RV-81 regulator can be mounted only in the horizontal position.
Vent each regulator individually as required. Regulator vent line sizes vary by model.
Specify only AERCO approved regulators. Contact us for selection assistance for gas pressures above 14" W. C.
Engineering specifications and drawings should indicate the design gas pressure to the AERCO supplied external regulator.

Pressure Relief Valves
Available ratings: 30, 50, 75, 100, 150 psig

Ohio Power Piping Code:
If over 30 psig, a fee plus 2% of project cost is payable to State of Ohio for inspection.

Boiler Nameplate Data
If 30 psig boiler, AERCO will stamp boiler "Boiler designed for 30 psig, and tested to 150 psig".

Interface of Boilers with Building Automation System
Decide whether the BAS will simply enable the AERCO boilers or whether a 4-20 ma signal will be sent from the BAS to provide either a
supply header setpoint temperature for the boilers or a firing percentage for each Aerco boiler.
AERCO is BACnet compatible with RS-485 twisted pair communications (Master Slave / Token Passing). Drivers must be written for BAS.

Control Wiring
Specify which contractor will install wiring from Outside Air Temperature sensors(s), Building Management System, fault sensor, power
level output, etc.

Variable Speed Pumps
A low flow limit should be programmed for the variable speed pumping system, based on minimum boiler flow times number of boilers.

Multiple Boilers
Use AERCO Boiler Management System for 3 or more boilers to obtain maximum efficiency and minimum cycling.
Use individual outdoor sensors and standard controls for indoor/outdoor reset on 2 boilers or less. Consult C. J . Michelson Company for
discussion of operation.

Multiple Domestic Water Heaters - Sequencing
Use differential set points to eliminate short cycling on low load. As an example, set one heater to operate with 124 F setpoint. and second
heater with 120 F setpoint.

If differential setpoint approach results in the temperature swing being too wide, then use customized control system. Contact C. J . Michelson
Company for information.

The Saf-T Vent
CI Plus is an air-insulated double-wall

product designed for commercial applications. It is
approved for use on individual or common vented ANSI
Category I, II, III and IV Gas Burning Appliances, Direct
Vent and for Gas and Oil fired appliances listed for
Type L-Vent applications as approved by the appliance
manufacturer.
The Saf-T Vent CI Plus factory-built Special Gas Vent
system is Tested and Listed by Underwriters
Laboratories to UL 1738/ULC S636 for used with Listed
natural gas or propane burning equipment that produce
continuous flue-gas temperatures not above 550 F.
Also Tested and Listed by Underwriters Laboratories
to UL 641/ULC S609 for use with Listed oil and gas
burning equipment that are suitable for venting with
TypeL vent which produce continuous flue-gas
temperatures not above 570 F. The system is to be
installed and sealed per manufacturers instructions
so all joints are gas tight, preventing leakage of products
of combustion into a building.
The Saf-T Vent CI Plus system is a double-wall product
that consists of a flue-gas conduit fabricated from AL
29-4C
stainless steel, which is highly suited for use

with high-efficiency gas burning equipment, which
produce excessive amounts of condensation in the vent.
The outer jacket of the system is constructed of type
430 stainless steel with a space of approximately 1
between the flue-gas conduit and the jacket.
Note: CI Plus is also available with 1 of insulation in
the annular space.
All joints in the Saf-T Vent CI Plus system are fastened
with a closure system that combines the features of
Heatfabs tapered ends with a mechanical closure
system which consists of tabs and a locking band.
The locking band is tightened from a single location
using a simple hand tool, pulling the two pieces together
making a pressure tight assembly. When installed on
positive pressure or condensing applications, the joints
must be sealed. Diameters 4 through 16 are
manufactured with a factory adhered seal. Diameters
18 through 32 must use an approved sealant on the
job site. This closure system is tested to be gas tight
at two and one-half times the Listed pressure rating of
15 water column.
When properly installed the Saf-T Vent Plus system
may safely and securely be utilized in either interior or
exterior installations. The system is capable of
withstanding reasonable wind and incidental loads as
required by UL standards.
When connected to gas-burning appliances with a
maximum continuous flue-gas temperature of 550 F,
4 through 24 diameter Saf-T Vent CI Plus can be fully
enclosed vertically by combustible materials at 1 or
greater clearance and 2632 diameter by 2 or greater
clearance. For Oil fired Type L-Vent with a maximum
flue-gas temperature of 570, 4 through 8 diameter a
fully enclosed system requires 3 clearance. For
horizontal applications refer to the Clearance Chart
(publication #11724).
The Saf-T Vent CI Plus system is to be sized in
accordance wi th appl i ance manufacturers
specifications, the most current edition of NFPA 211
Standard for Chimneys, Fireplaces, Vents, and Solid
Fuel-Burning Appliances, the most current edition of
NFPA 54 National Fuel Gas Code (ANSI Z223.1),
ASHRAE recommendations, and all applicable local
and regional codes. This proper sizing, based on
information supplied by the consumer, is reflected in
scale drawings of the system provided by Heatfab.
The Saf-T Vent CI Plus system is to be installed only
in accordance with Heatfabs, Installation and
Maintenance Instructions and with all applicable
local, regional, and national codes.

Installation Instructions
Directly On Pitched Roof. Prepare a square or round opening per the framing chart. Apply weather-
stripping or outdoor caulk to the bottom of the cone plate. Attach the cone to the roof using common
construction methods. Flash over the cone plate and seal the fastener heads using normal roofing
requirements. When the vent pipe is in place through the Tall Cone, attach the Tall Cone storm collar
around the pipe. Apply RTV sealant around the top of the storm collar and the pipe. On the last section
of pipe before the Rain Cap, install the Ventilation Collar, ordered separately, over the air space between
the inner and outer vent pipes. Install the Rain Cap on the last section of vent per the Rain Cap
installation instructions. Position the Rain Cap Storm Collar 2" above the Ventilation Collar as shown in
the figure below.

Curb Frame
Install the storm collar, supplied with the Roof Jack, around the vent pipe that passes through the Roof Jack.
Tighten the storm collar using the screw clamp. The collar should be sitting on top of the Roof Jack to prevent
the vent pipe from slipping downward (figures 1A and 2A).
Flash over the Roof Jack utilizing normal roofing contractor methods. Flashing materials are not supplied
with the Roof Jack.
Roof Jack

The Roof Jack Support System is used for all vertical terminations through combustible and non-combustible
roof structures. The Roof Jack supports all wind loading and incidental contact with the flue system as well as
providing vertical support for up to 30 ft of venting (see chart).
Drill or hand punch screw or nail holes around the perimeter of the Roof Jack plate. Apply weather resistant
caulk to the bottom of the Roof Jack plate, gusset side down (fig. 1). Center the Roof Jack over the hole and
secure to the roof deck or curb using screws or roofing nails with neoprene washers.
Prepare the penetration location for the Roof Jack Support System on a flat roof by drilling a small hole up
through the roof at the desired location. Refer to the framing chart dimension B, and figure 1. Cut a square
hole and remove any existing roofing materials to clear the roofjack. If any roof joists must be cut in order to
locate the vent, follow local and national building codes for reframing the opening. If using a raised roof curb
refer to the framing chart, dimension C and figure 2. Roof curbs can be purchased at most building supply
companys and come in many pitches and roof configurations.

Apply weather resistant sealant around the storm collar to prevent rainwater from entering the Roof Jack.
If the vent pipe protrudes more than 6 feet above the roof, guy sections must be used above and below the
Roof Jack for stabilization. Refer to the Saf-T Vent Guy installation instructions (PI-CIGUY) if necessary.

Tall Cone Flashing

APPLICATION 1. Directly On Flat Roof. Prepare a square or round opening 4 1/2" larger than the
inner vent pipe diameter, i.e. an 8" inner vent would have a 12 1/2" opening. Apply weather-stripping or
outdoor caulk to the bottom of the cone plate. Attach the cone to the roof using common construction
methods. Flash over the cone plate and seal the fastener heads using normal roofing requirements.
When the vent pipe is in place through the Tall Cone, attach the Tall Cone storm collar around the pipe
and position at least 2" above the top edge of the cone (figure 1). This 2" air space will release any built
up heat from inside the cone. Apply RTV sealant around the top of the storm collar and the pipe. On the
last section of pipe before the Rain Cap, install the Ventilation Collar over the air space between the
inner and outer vent pipes. Install the Rain Cap on the last section of vent per the Rain Cap installation
instructions. Position the Rain Cap Storm Collar 2" above the Ventilation Collar as shown in Figures 1
& 3. When the Tall Cone is used as a vertical support (figure 1 & 2) screw the self-tapping screws
through the holes in the cone and into the wall of the Outer Vent.

APPLICATION 2. On Top Of Roof Curb (figure 3). Before installing, place the cone on top of the curb
and mark the outline of the curb on the bottom of the cone plate. Use snips to notch out the corners of
the plate to match the curb. Bend down the extra material with duckbill pliers to create a cap which fits
over the curb. Attach the cone to the curb using the same methods as described in Application 1.

The Saf-T Vent CI Plus system can be installed through any type of wall using the Saf-T Vent CI Plus
Wall Termination Assembly. The wall termination requires mechanical support from the wall sufficient
to support any incidental loads on the system. If the wall is not sufficient to support the termination
assembly, then appropriate additional framing and/or blocking is required.
Installation Procedure
The Wall Termination Assembly is packed with the screen
cover and end collar (Figure 1). Before beginning, remove this
screen cover. Prepare an opening for the Wall Termination
Assembly in the wall. The opening must be 7 inches larger than
the Inner Vent pipe diameter. The opening may be either round
or square so long as allowance for proper clearance to
combustible material is made. When passing through solid,
noncombustible construction, clearances may be reduced if
necessary. If there are not sufficient support members to
secure the Wall Termination Assembly or if there is a semi-rigid
foam insulation layer under the sheathing, the opening must be
blocked out or framed to provide support.
Position the Wall Termination Assembly into the enlarged hole from the outside (Figure 2). Secure the
assembly using common construction methods. Seal under the screw heads with caulking. The
assembly may be painted to match the exterior decor.

Proceed with the installation of Saf-T Vent CI Plus sections
and terminate it through the Wall Termination Assembly
(Figure 3). Install the End Collar on the last section to
close off the 1" air space around the inner vent. Seal
between the vent and the End Collar for weather conditions.
The assembly is constructed to allow for 2 degrees (1/4"
per foot) of pitch in the vent sections. Seal the gap between
the vent and the end plate of the Assembly using silicone
caulk suitable for extended exposure to the elements.
The vent section must protrude at least 2 inches into the
screened area beyond the end plate of the Wall Termination
Assembly (Figure 4). Attach the screen cover using the
stainless screws. Align the hole in the top (solid) portion of
the screen cover with the top of the assembly and securely
screw the two together. The screen cover may be easily
removed for inspection of the venting system.

Application Information
The Support Plate is used to provide support for vertically
installed vent. The Support Plate can be installed at the base
of the stack or at various other locations throughout the stack
when additional vertical support is required.

To Install:
1. Refer to Table 1 for Minimum Vertical Spacing
between Supports. Note: A Wall Band is required at
10 intervals to provide lateral support for the vent (See Fig. 2).
2. Determine the appropriate location for mounting the Support Plate. The Support Plate should be
mounted to solid framing members (by others) capable of supporting the weight of the vent.
3. Secure the Support Plate to the framing members by installing the appropriate fastener through
the pilot hole in the plate and into the framing members (See Figs. 1 & 2).
4. Once the plate is securely mounted, connect additional vent sections to the Support Plate by
using the standard joint attachment method.

Saf-T Vent CI Plus is an AL29-4C superferritic stainless steel conduit with a one-inch air space and a type
430 stainless steel outer jacket. It is ideal for close clearance installation within building chases.
Saf-T Vent CI Plus combines the tight fit of the tapered male and female expands with a patented* closure system
which consists of tabs and a locking strap. The locking strap provides a mechanical connection between the two
assembled sections. It also serves to pull together the two pieces, making a pressure-tight assembly. The locking
strap is tightened from a single location using a simple hand tool. This single-point fastening system allows one
installer to complete an assembly without rotating the sections or rotating himself around the sections.
The double-wall construction allows for an insulating blanket of 1" air space between the inner wall and the outer
wall. This air insulation has the advantage of keeping the flue gases warmer as well as making the skin temperature
of the outer wall cooler. The reduced skin temperature allows the product to be installed in closer proximity to
combustible materials. Refer to the installation instructions for Heat-fab's Saf-T Vent CI Plus system (PI-CCINS).

Introduction:
Part Numbering System for CI Plus Saf-T Vent CI Plus parts are identified by the following numbering
system which describes the composition, use, diameter and length of each part.
1. The Product Code, or Model, is comprised of two letters. CC designates CI Plus, which has a one inch air
space insulation.
2. The Material Code is one letter and designates the type of steel or steel combination from which the part is
made. A stands for AL-29-4C inner/ 430SS outer. Other outer jacket materials are available; contact your Heat-fab
sales representative.
3. The Diameter of the inner vent is designated by two numbers, for example, a 6 inch diameter would be 06.
4. The Part shape description is 1 to 4 letters and are as follows: AD adapter, AJ adjustable, BT Boot Tee,
CV cover, DCV drain cover, E elbow, FC finish collar, FS firestop, GUY guy section, HZS horizontal support,
L for length, NCR for increaser, RC for raincap, RDC reducer, RJ roof jack, TCF tall cone flashing, TM for
termination, VTS vertical support, WP wall penetration.
5. The Qualifying description is 2 numbers and designates the length of a section, the angle of an elbow, or the
second diameter size as on increasers and reducers and boot tees with a different diameter tap. Examples are
12 for a 12" long section or 90 for a 90 degree elbow.
An example of a part number is CCA14E90, which would be a CI Plus, CC; made from AL29-4C inner and 430SS
outer, A; 14 inch diameter, 14; an elbow, E; 90 degree, 90.

Fire Stop A firestop may be required anytime Saf-T Vent CI Plus penetrates combustible floors, walls, or ceilings.
Remove any insulating material from the floor, wall or ceiling cavity for at least 1" around the vent for diameters 4" - 24" and
2" around the vent for diameters 26" - 32". Review fire codes and consult with local building code officials to determine the
necessity for a firestop. The stainless steel firestop may be trimmed provided the required clearances are maintained.

Condensate Drain Tube Kit This kit contains a length of high temperature silicone rubber tubing, a clamp,
and two cable ties. The silicone tubing is rated for 500F, and is translucent to allow inspection of the P-trap. Larger diameter

unique design of this part allows it to be installed in a horizontal, vertical or inclined orientation. Continuous horizontal runs in

Boot Tee Use vertically or horizontally to add appliances into a common-vent system. When installed horizontally, the
male end of the tee body may be capped off with a tee cover to allow for future appliances. When used in conjunction with
a drain tee cover, the boot tee will effectively transition a vent system from a horizontal to a vertical orientation while allowing
for proper condensate drainage. The pressure drop through the tap for this fitting is equivalent to 15 feet of horizontal vent.
Both inlet connections rotate to accommodate direction changes. Each Boot Tee comes standard with a coupler, one joint
locking strap and two rotating clamps.

A
Guy Support Section Provides vertical support using a part that is a flue-gas-carrying component of the vent
system. Guy sections are primarily installed in long, inaccessible chases or used to provide support to systems with extended
lengths above the roofline. Attach the guy section using stainless steel or galvanized cables or chain (supplied by others). Each
guy section comes with a coupler and a joint locking strap.

Floor Support Use as a support between floors. Can also be used inside an accessible chase with the addition of site
designed support brakets.
Supports:
Vertical Support Plate Use as a vertical stack support. Can be used horizontally if needed. Framework is by
others, utilizing typical construction components such as angle iron or unistrut type material. Support section is fully assembled and
includes a joint band.

SUPPORT
Support Clamp Typical for smaller diameter support. For use on horizontal systems to provide support at the
required 6-foot intervals. Support clamps by themselves do not maintain the necessary clearances to combustible materials; be sure
to consider clearances when planning the system. Support clamps are sold in pairs, with two half-shells, and two 1/4-20 nuts and
bolts. This part is made from 18-gauge Type 304 stainless steel and should not be installed in the direct path of flue gases.
Can also be used as guy support clamps, vertically as well as horizontally.

Horizontal Support for Large Diameter Typical for large diameter support. Provides horizontal
support for the Saf-T Vent CI Plus system. Diameters 24" thru 32" must have support every 6 feet of horizontal run. The support
may be attached from the center of the bracket or from the sides
of the support bracket. Support hangers by themselves do not
maintain the necessary clearances to combustible materials; be
sure to consider clearances when planning the system.

Roof Jack Support System For use with vertical terminations. Use to pass through combustible and
non-combustible roof structures. The roof jack support system must be installed on a flat roof or a level curb only. Each roof
jack support system includes a storm collar that provides support and when sealed, acts as a water barrier. Cannot be used
in a chase with a 1" clearance to vent. Refer to Tall Cone Flashing.

Tall Cone Flashing and Support Use as a vertical roof penetration/support in conjunction with a combus-
tible chase. Can be used with a roof curb if needed. Can be used on metal roofs with a 2-12 pitch. This part comes with a
storm collar and support screws and is of all stainless steel construction. A Vented Termination Collar must be used when
installed in a combustible chase and must be ordered separately. CAUTION: the support screws can only be installed with
Saf-T Vent CI Pus venting.

Terminations:
Rain Cap Use as a termination on vertical systems. Category I and II appliances require a raincap or other device to
prevent rainwater from entering the vent. Vent systems for positive pressure appliances may omit the raincap if there are
other provisions for draining rainwater from the system. The raincap may also be used as a horizontal termination. Each
raincap includes a joint locking strap as well as a storm collar. Call Heat-fab to inquire about larger diameters.

Terminations:
Exit Cone Use as a termination to increase the velocity of the flue gases exiting the stack. The exit cone may also
help to reduce ice buildup in cold climates where a rain cap may normally be used. A narrow Finish Collar is included to seal
off the 1" air space of the CI Plus vent. The Exit Cone can be attached to EZ Seal vent systems with the addition of an adapter

Ventilation Collar The ventilation collar is installed over the air space between the inner vent and outer jacket and
allows any built up heat to escape. The ventilation collar must be used on Tall Cone Flashing installations with a combustible
