SPC631 PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY

1.Give three (3) physical properties of strong acid and strong base.
STRONG ACID STRONG BASE
Electrical conductor Insoluble in water
Lower pH value than 7
High rate of reaction

2. Define the following terms:
Reversible reaction:
Non-reversible reaction
Reversible Reaction Definition: A reversible reaction is a chemical reaction where the
reactants form products that, in turn, react together to give the reactants back.

Reversible reactions will reach an equilibrium point where the concentrations of the reactants
and products will no longer change.

A reversible reaction is denoted by a double arrow pointing both directions in a chemical
equation. For example, a two reagent, two product equation would be written as

A + B C + D
These unidirectional reactions are known as non-reversible reactions, reactions in which the
reactants convert to products and where the products cannot convert back to the reactants. These
reactions are essentially like baking. The ingredients, acting as the reactants, are mixed and
baked together to form a cake, which acts as the product. This cake cannot be converted back to
the reactants (the eggs, flour, etc.), just as the products in an irreversible reaction cannot convert
back into the reactants.

3.Briefly explain the effect of temperature on equilibrium
For the Higher Tier, you need to know what happens to the amount of product in an
equilibrium mixture if the temperature is changed.
If the forward reaction is exothermic and the temperature is increased, the yield
of products is decreased. If the temperature is decreased, the yield of products is
increased.
If the forward reaction is endothermic and the temperature is increased, the
yield of products is increased. If the temperature is decreased, the yield of products is
decreased.

4. Consider the reaction below:
Fe
3+
(aq)
+ SCN
-
(aq)
Fe(SCN)
2+
(aq)

(yellowish) (blood red)
Based on the chemical reaction above, briefly explain the effect of adding sodium hydroxide
to the solution.
One of the simplest ways to think about the effect of adding sodium hydroxide is to realize that it
removes H
+
ions because of this reaction: H
+
(aq) + OH
-
(aq) H
2
O (l)
So sodium hydroxide removes H
+
ions. If there was no chemical reaction then adding NaOH
should decrease the amount of H
+
(aq). The original H
+
in the water would decrease to become
H
+

5. Briefly explain the difference between electrolyte and non-electrolyte
An electrolyte is a chemical compound which conduct electricity in the molten state or in an
aqueous solution and undergoes chemical changes.
A non-electrolytes is a chemical compounds which does not conduct electricity in any state.

6. Give three (3) examples of electrolyte and non-electrolyte
electrolyte non-electrolyte
Acid solution Naphthalene
Alkali solution Latex
Molten salt Sugar solution
