Block Assembly
Shape A
1. Sew eight strips together along the long edges to make a strata.
Press seams in one direction. Make two.
2. Sew the remaining fourteen strips together along the long edges
to make a strata.
3. Cut template shapes one at a
time. Place template shape A so that
it is close to one edge, but centered on
a section of strata as shown. (figure
1) Cut out one shape A.
4. Repeat to cut six shape A from
the first row. Rotate the template and cut five more shapes.
You will get eleven shape A from each of the two smaller strata
sections. (figure 2) Repeat to cut fourteen shape A from the wider
strata section for a total of thirty-six.
Sewing Shape A to Shape B
Sewing these shapes together means sewing an inside curve to an outside
curve. This is not difficult, but it does take more care than sewing a
straight seam.
5. Start by folding each shape in half along the curved side to find
and mark the center with a light crease. (figure 3)
6. Place an A and a B shape right sides together with the B shape on the
bottom. Line up the center creases and place one pin through
both layers at the crease.
7. Next, align the straight edges at the top. The two shapes will
not lie flat on each other, but this is normal. You want to get the
straight edges and the first fraction of the two curves lined up.
Using a 1/4" seam allowance, sew three or four stitches from the
straight edges around the curve. Gently lift the top layer of fabric
and align the edge with the bottom layer just as it feeds into the
presser foot. There is no need to match the entire curve, only the
section that is going under the presser foot. Take a few more
stitches, realign the top and bottomfabrics and continue to sew
in this manner until you reach the center pin. Remove the pin and
sew a few stitches, align the layers of fabric and sew a few more
stitches. Continue in this manner until you reach the end. Take
your time and slowly guide the fabrics, using tweezers, if desired,
to make it easier to align the edges.
A. Match and pin at center.
B.Bring this straight edge to line up with this straight edge.
Crease at center.
C. Start sewing from this corner.

Adding the Corner Squares
9. Press the 3" squares in half along the diago-
nal to make a crease line. Or, using a pencil
and ruler, draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of each
square.
10. Each block has two 3" squares sewn to diagonally opposite
corners. Match up the squares as follows:
Eighteen blocks have TongaB7805 Sky sewn to the shape B
side and TongaB7790 Ink sewn to the shape A side.
Eighteen blocks have TongaB7812 Grey sewn to the B shape
side and TongaB7786 Navy sewn to the A shape side.
11. Right sides together, place a 3" square on a corner of the block.
(figure 5) Stitch across the diagonal line. Flip the fabric over and press.
Trim the extra layers below the triangle,
leaving a 1/4" seam allowance. Then, right sides
together, place a 3" square on the diagonally
opposite corner of the block. Stitch, press open
and trim as before. (figures 5 and 6)
Assemble the Quilt Top
12. Arrange the blocks as shown in the quilt
photo. Sew together into rows. Press the
seam allowance of each row in the opposite direction to the
rows above and below. Then sew the rows together.
13. Piece the Inner Border strips together end to end into one long
strip. Measure the quilt top from side to side. Cut two inner border
strips to this length. Sew the strips to the top and bottom of the
quilt top. Press seams out. Measure the quilt top from top to bottom.
Cut two inner border strips to this measurement. Sew to the sides
of the quilt top. Press seams out.
14. Piece the Outer Border strips together end to end to make
one long strip. Measure the length and width of the quilt top. Cut
four strips to this measurement. Sew a strip to the left and right
sides of the top. Press seams out.
15. Sew the 5" squares of Inner Border fabric to the ends of each
of the two remaining Outer Border strips. Press seams in. Sew to
the top and bottomof the quilt. Press seams out. (figure 7)
Finishing
16. Layer the quilt top, batting and backing and quilt using an
allover design of your choice.
17. Sew the six yellow binding strips (reserved from the pre-cut
Tonga Treats) together, end to end. Fold in half, lengthwise,
wrong sides together and press. Sew onto the front of the quilt,
mitering at the corners. Press binding over and sew to the back by
hand or machine. Make a label and enjoy!
