ENGLISH PROGRAMME
Autumn 2014

WELCOME TO ALL STUDENTS!

Editor: Ida Klitgrd, Director of Studies, English, Roskilde University 2014.

A warm welcome both to previous and new students to the programme. Whatever your
background, we welcome you and hope you will have a fulfilling and productive semester in the
English programme.

Please read through the whole of this document. It contains information on courses and
activities, teachers, our timetable and the calendar for the semester with important dates to
remember. Course plans can also be found at www.kursus.ruc.dk.

In addition, information will be sent out to students regularly through the semester on our
student mailing list, eng-stud@ruc.dk. Please subscribe to this list as soon as possible/as soon as
you have a RUC email address, by going to https://intra.ruc.dk/en/employees/administration/
finance-it-and-technical-services-fit/it/self-service/mailing-lists/subscribe-or-unsubscribe/
choosing Subscribe, Department of Culture and Identity and then Students at English on the
menu provided there after you have logged in.

Our semester introduction meeting takes place on Monday 1 September from 9.30 in the
morning, in the lunch room in House 3.2.5 (see full programme at the end of this letter). The
Director of Studies, Ida Klitgrd, will be present together with as many course teachers and

give you the introductory information you need to orient yourself in our wide-ranging course

3. Administrative Staff

Anette Fussing, whose office is in corridor 3.2.3., is our representative in the Exam section and
you should direct all your queries about exams to her. Her phone number is 46743067, and her
e-mail is cuid-kand@ruc.dk.

Susan Kristensen is our secretary for the Foreign Languages Board of Studies and takes care of
all administrative matters concerned with enrolments, credit transfer, etc. She is also our
secretary to go to concerning all other matters, and she is also situated in corridor 3.2.3. Her
phone number is 46742024. Mail: cuid-kand@ruc.dk

Student counsellor Lene Kristine Konrad is located in 3.2.3 and can be reached at frem-
studivejledningen@ruc.dk. See more about the services offered by the student counsellor below.

Charlotte Nielsen has been elected student representative on the Board of Studies for Foreign
Languages - charnie@ruc.dk.

Alberto Nielsen is the head Computer Technician for our section of the Department of Culture
and Identity, i.e. all the teachers, secretaries and students of 5 boards of studies. The helpdesk
address is: cuid-helpdesk@ruc.dk. If you send an email to this address, your task will go into the
queue along with many other requests from the whole department. In other words, if it is at all
possible for you to get a fellow student to help you with your computer problem, please try that
before/as well as contacting the helpdesk!

4. Important Dates and Deadlines

It is, of course, a really good idea to show up for the Semester Introduction, on 1 September, where
there will be more information and ample opportunities to ask questions, as well as a chance to
meet up with your fellow students. It is also important to familiarise yourselves thoroughly (and
repeatedly!) with the Study Regulations and the Study Guidelines, which explain these choices in
more detail, as soon as possible at the beginning of term. Both these documents are accessible
on the Intranet for the English Programme, accessible via http://ruc.dk/english

Every year we set a deadline for applying for supervision. Everybody wishing to receive project
supervision has to apply to the Board of Studies, using the special supervision application form
available at https://intra.ruc.dk/studier-og-kurser/alle-fag/engelsk/forms/. Your applications for
project supervision have to reach Susan Kristensen by mail at cuid-kand@ruc.dk no later than
Wednesday 10 September. We cannot give guarantees for specific supervisors in advance.
Please note that even though you have already indicated to us that you are doing a speciale, we
would like to have your application for supervision no later than 20 August.

5. Thesis Seminar

The Thesis Seminar is the forum in which students who are embarking on their final MA thesis
(whether a speciale/thesis or depth module project) can present their work in progress and
ideas for feedback and discussion. It also provides an opportunity for just getting together and
sharing experiences, which can be important during this final phase when students often work
alone. The seminars programme will be arranged at a brief meeting on 1 September 11 a.m.,
and we ask all new thesis writers to be at House 3.2.5 at that time so they can present their
project proposals or ideas, and discuss with other thesis writers how they want the seminar to
proceed.

6. Exam Registration

Because of new regulations, the Board of Studies for Foreign Languages has had to move the
registration so that you automatically register for exams when you sign up for a study activity,
i.e. courses and supervision. Because of the early registration requirement for projects, we will
now allow broad, preliminary project titles rather than detailed final ones.

You will not be allowed to register for your first MA exams unless/until you have a full BA
degree with English as one of your subjects. In case you have any queries in connection with this
or related matters, please contact the student counsellor.

Please note that there are special rules for the use of computers at written exams, and that it is
the students' own responsibility to make themselves familiar with these Cirkulre 16 posted in
the corridors).

7. The R.U. English Website

At the Roskilde University English homepage http://www.ruc.dk/english/ the most recent
edition of our study regulations (studieordningen) is accessible on a permanent basis, as are the
Study Guidelines, which is a more accessible version of the official rules available in English. The
regulations and guidelines for students on the old study regulations can be found in the archive
entry on the homepage. A list of faculty and staff, including a description of each teachers area
of research and selected publications and many other useful documents can also be found.
Semester documents are updated regularly.

8. Student Counsellor

The Department of Language and Culture has a student counsellor available to help answering
all kinds of questions concerning your education at Roskilde University. Among other things,
the counsellor can help answering questions concerning academic choices, language
qualifications or admission requirements, as well as questions concerning study regulations,
deadlines or exam enrolments. If you have problems in relation to group work, project work,
personal issues, your dissertation or your supervisor or you simply need to talk to someone,
6
please do not hesitate to contact the student counsellors office where of course all discussions
are strictly confidential. Student counsellor for English: Lene Kristine Konrad. Mail: frem-
studievejledningen@ruc.dk. Office: House 3.2.3, Address: Universitetsvej 1, Postboks 260, 4000
