This unit is aimed at the third semester in-training teachers of the
Formacin Complementaria program at ESNDMM to orient them
how to use nursery rhymes in the teaching of English to Preschool
and primary school children

At the end of the unit the in-training teachers will be able to

1. Identify the basic principles of the nursery rhymes as
authentic resources to boost preschool and elementary
school students English language learning in a natural
and funny way.

2. Select nursery rhymes to design meaningful learning
English activities for primary school students with clear
basic theoretical foundation.

3. Implement a clearly aimed activity to teach English to
primary school students in a teaching demo session.

4. To promote in-training teachers communicative
competence and teaching English strategies.

5. To encourage in-training teachers to create teaching




materials using resources on line and others using ICT
tools

Complementaria Program of the Escuela Normal Superior Distrital
Mara Montessori is composed by 25 students. Most of them
belong to low and mid social class. Their estimated general level of
English is A2 according to European Frame Work.
They study from 6:30 a.m. to 2.30 p.m.
This group has two sessions of English (Monday and Tuesday 6:30-
8:20) which take place in the CRI (English resource center) which
has fifteen laptops and a video beam.
At the present moment these in-training teachers have started




they final research project which is based on their teaching
practice that follows on the five research fields the ESNDMM has
established. Currently, there are three in- training teachers
carrying their practicum and research projects in English, on for
the urban context at primary school ESNDMM and another one in
a rural school.
Their attitude to the learning of English is positive despite their
difficulties

This teaching and learning experience will take aspects of three
main approaches: the cognitive, the constructivism and the
social approaches. The idea is to give them some new
information which can be compared and complemented with
their previous knowledge. Then, they will be able to work in
teams to apply what they have learned and to design new
proposals. The purpose is to learn with and from other to make it
a meaningful experience and also learning by doing.
