registrations, if space is available, will cost $75 per person.
The night of the Bus Tour, the campy fun begins with check-in at
Gregs between 5 and 6.45 p.m. This is where participants receive
their Bus Tour badge, review the Bus Tour Rules and welcome
the virgins. Buses load and promptly depart at 7. The tour
includes stops at Monument Circle, several restaurants and local
bars where the ladies solicit donations from the patrons. Over
$18,200 was raised as part of the Bus Tour in 2013.

most money was crowned Bag Lady Queen for a year. While raising money is still a major factor in
crowning The Queen, the group now hosts a Bag Lady Queen Pageant prior to the annual Bus Tour.
This years pageant will be held at Talbott Street Sunday 26th October. Candidates for 2014 Bag Lady
Queen are Cassidy Fellows-Sommers, Scarlette OHairy, Kayla Hilltop, Heidi Ho Klum, Lola Palooza,
June Taylor and Ladonna Williams. The new Bag Lady Queen will be crowned at the end of the Bus Tour
(approximately 2 a.m.) at Gregs. Everyones invited to come out and support their favourite candidate
and help raise additional money for the DEFA Fund.
In the 2013 calendar year, the Pride Bag Ladies raised and donated over $54,000. The goal for 2014 is
$70,000 in honour of Founder Coby Palmers 70th birthday. As of mid-September, the Bag Ladies had
already raised and donated over $62,000, so dig deep and help them make or pass that 70-grand goal.

The Bag Ladies could quite possibly be the nations first HIV
and AIDS fundraising organisation. Since the initial bus tour in
1981, more and more men have become part of this on-going
and growing tradition. All these years later, the Bag Ladies are
stronger than ever and the money they raise supports several local
organisations. The Damien Centre, the Gregory Powers Direct
Emergency Financial Assistance (DEFA) Fund, Indiana Youth
Group (IYG), Step Up and the Indiana AIDS Fund all benefit from
money raised by the Bag Ladies.
In 1981 around Halloween, 70 or so men dressed in drag, boarded
city buses and began a journey to help in the fight against AIDS
calling themselves The Bag Ladies. The Bag Ladies got their
name from an article out of a New York City newspaper. Coby
Palmer, one of the originals, read in the article that the New York
bag ladies were fun and campy and had lots chutspah, similar
to what the Indianapolis Bag Ladies are like today.
The Ladies have been part of several organisations throughout
the years: Indiana Cares, AIDServe and Indiana Still Cares. In
2005, when Indiana Still Cares disbanded, the Bag Ladies joined
with Indy Pride, where they march on in their high heels and
outrageous hair and continue raising money to this day.

fundraiser, raised more than $174,000 in 2013, funds that allow
the Centre to continue offering its services completely free of
charge and lowering its communitys HIV viral load. This years
Grande Masquerade will feature the theme The Wicked Event
and will be held at The Indianapolis Marriott Downtown.
Masks and costumes are optional but highly encouraged.

Grande Masquerade 2014 is expected to raise $180,000 to

support the Centres mission to lead the fight in preventing the
spread of HIV and to assist persons in Central Indiana affected
by HIV/AIDS to move forward each day with dignity. Tickets
to this years event are $135 for single general admission and
$175 for single VIP tickets. Guests may also purchase general
admission tables of 10 for $1350 or VIP tables of 10 for $1750.
Please note that pre-sale tickets end 3rd October and ticket
prices go up $25 per seat thereafter. Tickets are on sale now at
www.damien.org/tix.
The event will kick off with a VIP Reception, cocktails for all
tastes, and a silent auction packed with items and packages
for one and all. The auction will feature getaways, stay-cation
packages, adventure experiences, massages, gift baskets,
original artwork, dining certificates and more. Auction
item donations are still being accepted. Please contact Elisa
Rogowski at erogowski@damien.org or 317/632.0123, Ext. 269
for more information. The evening will also feature dinner, a
live auction, live entertainment, and of course, dancing!

The Goose
Is Loose!
By Michael Chanak Cincinnati Pundit & Commentator
So this is 65? Not exactly what I thought it would be like, but yes, the Goose
turns 65 in October.
Lady Arthritis has visited my knees and feet. I could stand to lose some
ballast. The pills keep the BP down and the cholesterol under control. Ive
stopped smoking, and believe it or not I do 45 minutes of a stationary bike
daily.
I have now outlived my father, a male cousin and an aunt all of whom died
young because of heart disease. I suppose my disposition, the pills or the
abundance of bile in my system has kept me going.
It seems to me when my mom and dad were 40 they seemed old, and certainly
my grandparents older still. Is 65 the new 40? I am not sure and I hope not.
Everyone seems old when you are a teenager.
Actually, I have another theory about aging. Unlike my heterosexual peers,
the Goose cant mark age with the birth of children, graduation and all the
standard markers. I guess there is something about hanging with others in
volunteer groups that keeps me vital. What better way than through others to
learn about the issues or the interests of today?
Sure, there are studies out there that say connectedness to others has a lot
to do with longevity and survival. When the Community Centre still had
its physical location I used to answer phone calls. More than once an older
person found themselves isolated because a partner had died or they were
closeted a good part of their life. These folks knew there was a community
out there but learning to access it was a real challenge. When I hear those
stories, I am so grateful that for whatever unique reason a long time ago
I got involved. Even when I had a boyfriend, we both had activities in the
community. Id add there are benefits we seldom hear about as we age. Goose
was a full on bitch and far more moody when she was young. Now I am far
more strategic where I put my energy. As I grew comfortable in my own skin,
I found I was less concerned about others personalities and foibles but more
focused on what we can accomplish together. It helps.
Not all comments are fine, coming from younger folks as one young queen
put it, It must be terrible to be so old and not be able to have what you want
(carne). My response was, My dear, the beauty of age is when you are older,
everything and everyone is beautiful.

Your Timing
Wont Be Off

When You Invest Systematically

If one of your worries is whether youre investing
at the right time, it shouldnt be. By investing a set
amount of money on a regular basis, you establish
a simple routine that can help make your financial
goals a reality.

In addition, investing systematically can help:

Make it possible to use market fluctuations
to your advantage
Add potential growth and diversification to
your portfolio
Keep your long-term financial goals in focus
Investing a set amount of money on a regular basis does not ensure a
profit and does not protect against loss in declining markets. Such a
plan involves continual investment in securities regardless of fluctuating
price levels of such securities. You should consider your financial ability
to continue the purchases through periods of low price levels.

Call or visit your local Edward Jones

financial advisor today.

So just what barrier does the Goose see that keeps older folks from
participating? Sometimes its simple things. If you are on diuretics or blood
pressure pills taking on 90F+ plus weather can be tricky. Other times, longer
walks (as in parades, activist rallies) on uneven terrain are hard on old knees.
Sometimes, maybe too often, I believe we older adults put mental barriers up
for ourselves. For instance, we believe: I am not pretty or do not fit in. If you
think about it, these insecurities are not unlike those of our younger peers.
I read a group of pretty rough comments recently about another citys pride
where some older adults were excoriating the organisers over certain events
being youth oriented etc. As I read and re-read the comments, I suggested
kindly that rather than shout and scream sometimes, if we just say how
something impacts (insert the issue) you might find support. Better yet,
be a part of pride or any events planning if you are interested. Im proud to
say that a number of us old timers suggested that when pride moved back
downtown in Cincinnati in 2010, there was a need for safety stations and
medical support. Sure enough that suggestion was addressed. For those who
have mobility or heat issues the local pride organisers have a so called VIP
area along the route and down at the festival to shade the weary and keep
those of us who dont need the heat out of the sun. None of these issues were
hard battles to win not at all; people got it because older people were
willing to engage and take part on the committee. I know I am beginning to
sound like Liza Minnelli in Cabaret. But, to borrow the lyric, what good is
sitting alone in your room? Come hear the music play!

Outside
The Box
By Dr. Fred Schloemer, LCSW / Louisville
(Authors note: This months column is a personal experience rather than a question from
a reader.)
Cancer . . . just hearing the word makes us squirmespecially when we hear this: You
have a very fast-growing prostate cancer.
Six weeks ago, I was sitting in my doctors office with my partner Ernie, hearing those
exact words. Beginning that day, my world became a whirlwind of various tests, then
surgery, followed by weeks of being trapped in a bed or chair with drain tubes and bags
needing to be changed every few hours.

First Im thankful for a vigilant, proactive physician who caught my cancer early
through frequent PSA tests in the last year, then treated it aggressively. Any men out
there who dont get annual PSAs need to change that immediately. Im also thankful
to live in a time and place where medical advances and other resources make fighting
cancer more promising than in the past.
But most of all, Im thankful for family and friends who surrounded me with love, and
whose prayers I believe made a really big difference. In closing, guys get a PSA at least
annually. Anyone else with risk factors for cancer of any type, get frequent screenings.
Most cancers are treatable, and the earlier treatment occurs the better the prognosis.
Finally, for those of you currently coping with cancer, whether yours or a loved ones,
good luck and God bless.
Fred Schloemer, Ed.D., LCSW is a gay psychotherapist in Louisville. Write him at
FredSchloemer63@gmail.com

The good news is that the surgery to remove my prostate was successful, and follow-up
radiation and hormone therapy promise to ensure no traces of cancer remain. Im at
home now recovering well, lavished with love and concern (and more food than I know
what to do with), thanks to a wonderful network of family and friends.
When I shared what I was going through with editor and life-long friend Ted
Fleischaker, he suggested I skip last months column then make my next feature a
memoir recounting my experiences. So, here goes . . .
Lots of us may wonder at times what we would do if we were ever confronted with a
diagnosis of cancer. As for me, Ive imagined myself bravely doing whatever it took
to vanquish the disease, even trying experimental drugs that hadnt been approved yet
for use on humans. Ive fantasized melodramatic scenarios where I refused debilitating
treatments in favour of cherishing what little quality time I had left with loved ones.
When the time actually came, of course, none of these things happened. Instead I
found myself taking a deep breath, reaching for Ernies hand, then calmly exploring
treatment options with my physician. Admittedly my cool exterior disguised the fact
that my heart was pounding wildly. However I managed to keep my act together
until the consultation was over and we had a clear treatment plan an immediate
prostatectomy.
There were some tears on the ride home as Ernie and I discussed how to tell the kids,
and more tears when I actually did talk to them later that day. However both my kids
are strong, optimistic people, so we were able to comfort each other with reminders
that we had caught the cancer early and the prognosis was good.
Thanks to frequent cards, visits, and phone calls from friends, I survived the interval
until surgery pretty well. The day of my surgery, going through all the pre-op
preparations, I was buoyed by the presence of Ernie, my daughter Alex, and several
other loved ones. The next thing I knew, I was waking up in recovery.
From there, things were pretty awful for a while. My physician had opted for the
traditional hands-on radical surgery where a long incision is made, rather than
the more common robotic procedure which is much less invasive. I had thought I
had a pretty high pain tolerance, but in those first hours post-surgery I found myself
watching the clock anxiously to see when I could push my pain pump again and I
pushed it every eight minutes to be sure.
Surprisingly, the hardest, most unpleasant part was being stuck in bed with a catheter
and a drain tube from the incision. Waiting for someone to come discard your bodily
fluids is a humbling experience. Because Ernie is a nurse and I too have worked in
hospitals, my treatment team soon became comfortable with us taking care of these
tasks ourselves, and I felt immeasurably better being more independent in that way.
Despite my pain and discomfort, my physician and nurses expressed great satisfaction
with my progress, telling me I was the best prostatectomy patient they ever saw. Ill
admit, Im pretty determined when confronted with obstacles, and I put all my energy
into getting out of the hospital quickly.
Home again after a mere three days, I felt like a kid on his birthday, just being able
to sit in familiar surroundings and sleep in my own bed. Gazing about me at the
comfortable rooms of our house or out the windows at the fields of our farm, I was
reminded how easily we come to take simple pleasures for granted. Now well on my
way to a complete recovery, I can look back on all Ive gone through and give thanks for
a lot of things.

ELECTIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES

Its one of the maxims heard every election season: this vote has consequences. In the
last 90 days, the community has seen exactly how much consequence. Weve seen that
and one other thing pretty clearly: judges are not immune from the public discourse
on pertinent issues. In February, we won a hard fought victory at the statehouse. We
avoided a toxic campaign for a constitutional amendment one which would surely
have cost tens of millions of dollars and untold mental capital.
Immediately after the session ended, four separate federal lawsuits were filed which
took direct aim at Indianas Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Those lawsuits were
combined into one case before the chief judge of the Southern District of Indiana,
Richard Young. He voided DOMA and 800-plus couples rushed to courthouses across
Indiana to solemnize their commitment to one another this papers publisher and
this columnist included. Within three days, Judge Youngs order was delayed while
the Seventh District Court of Appeals debated the Young ruling. Fast-forward to today:
the Seventh Circuit unanimously upheld Youngs order after oral arguments which
blistered the state for its nonsensical DOMA defence.
Its important to note how we got to this point politically. Elections. Federal judges are
lifetime appointees. Nominated by the president, supported by home state senator(s),
confirmed by the full senate. Heres what we know about the judges who heard our
cases:
Elections matter bigtime. The judges who heard these combined cases are mostly
Democratic or libertarian-leaning on civil rights matters. Young was a Clinton
appointee. He presides over the entire Southern District from Evansville. The appeals
judges who heard the case include Chief Judge Richard Posner, a Reagan appointee
whos got a fierce independent streak and David Hamilton, an Obama appointee whose
lineage includes strong Dem ties.
When (and if) the Supreme Court (SCOTUS) decides to hear the combined IndianaWisconsin cases (initial SCOTUS deliberation conference was set for 27th September,
so after presstime at which time they could grant the petition for review, ignore it or
reject it), wed face the same 5-4 Court which Edie Windsor faced on the 27th of March
2013.
Those oral arguments were epic. I was fortunate to attend and witness the historic
session. 26th June the decision came down another Reagan appointee, Justice
Kennedy, wrote the majority opinion after delivering stern remarks during oral
arguments. Just like Posner did albeit less snarky comments.

MUNICIPAL DECISIONS FORTHCOMING

The 2014 campaign isnt over yet but theres intense jockeying for the 2015
Indianapolis municipal elections. And not just at the top of each ticket. Republican
Mayor Greg Ballard hasnt formally declared his desire to seek a third term, although
all signs point to it. Hes been a good ally to our community on multiple fronts. Hes a
difficult candidate to beat.
On the Dem side, former U.S. Attorney Joe Hogsett has declared his intention to
actively review the mayoral campaign. He opened a campaign office. Hed be a
formidable nominee. But so would State Rep. Ed Delaney whos been a staunch
community ally in the legislature. He wont get out of that race just yet if at all. And
on the Council front: four Democratic at-large candidates will have a tough choice to
make. Theyll have to run in a district or not at all. Thanks to our meddling legislature,
Indy is the only large Indiana city to have no at-large councilpersons as of next year.
Councilman Zach Adamson (D-At-Large) has already proclaimed hell seek a district
seat. Lets see where the others fall. Council control is in the balance. And again, as
noted above with the federal judges, your vote does count, and election results do have
consequences.
Cheers.

ELECTIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES, VOL. II
Theres much hand-wringing over the potential of Republican takeover of the U.S.
Senate. I dont want that of course, but weve survived worse. Heres why its different
now than in past seasons when legislative control was on the line: Jeff Sessions,
Republican Senator from Alabama.
Sessions is in line to become chairman of the Judiciary Committee if the Republicans
regain Senate control. That committee shepherds all judicial nominations from the
White House. Sessions is dangerous because hes shown a remarkable disconnect from
the real world. His time in the U.S. Attorneys office in Alabama was marked with

Ronaldus Maximus (thats what Rush Limbaugh calls Reagan) was a different kind of
Republican. He was born to act (kind of), and he came to D.C. with that background. I
never thought Id say this because he borrowed and spent us into oblivion but on civil
rights he was remarkably calm. And he nominated some kick-ass independent jurists
who were confirmed. Heres hoping that IF the supremes take our cases, we can only
hope for the same kind of path enjoyed in Windsor and Hollingsworth. We should be
so lucky. And if you have the opportunity, give a shout-out to the brave attorneys who
accepted the Indiana cases: Lambda Legal, American Civil Liberties Union-Indiana,
and my favourite: the first responders lawsuit whose lawyers are friends and selfless.

Demint lasted awhile hes now heading up the Heritage Foundation, the think
tank right arm of the conservative D.C. crowd. More money, less accountability. There
is a very strong chance that President Obama will make one more appointment to the
Supreme Court before 2016. Do we really want a man of Sessions caliber overseeing
that process? Its a scary thought. At the very least.

Its easy to see why Guardians of the Galaxy is the runaway smash blockbuster of the
Summer, racking up more than $600 million dollars in box office worldwide. Its smart,
funny, and the action sequences are, on the whole, nicely incorporated into the plot.
The film is yet another in the Marvel Cinematic Universe series of films, but unlike
its predecessors has a stand-alone storyline, unconnected to the Iron Man, Avengers,
Captain America or Thor movies. That may change, as recent Marvel films have proven
to be highly lucrative, and part of that appeal is the interconnectedness between the
films (and, more recently, the TV spin-off Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.).
Whereas the Iron Man, Avengers and Captain America films filter contemporary issues
through comic book storylines and sensibilities, Guardians of the Galaxy is content
to play it for laughs: the film is an intergalactic comic romp, part Star Wars and part
Spaceballs.
The story is not without an emotional heart, however. It has romance, friendship and
even self-sacrifice in pursuit of the greater good.
In 1988, young Peter Quill, a 1970s pop-music obsessed pre-teen, is coping with the
death of his mother and an absentee father when he is literally snatched from earth
by a group of space pirates, called Ravagers. Jumping forward 26 years, the grown-up
Quill is now a Ravager himself, snapping up minerals and artefacts from abandoned
planets and asteroids to sell on the black market. His latest mission to find a
valuable orb that holds mysterious powers.
While he still has his Sony Walkman set permanently on play, Quill has come a long
way from being the shy and frightened youngster before his abduction. His Star-Lord
persona is a no-nonsense kick-ass space warrior, albeit for personal gain.
With a price on his head, Quill teams up with the two bounty hunters sent to capture
him a talking raccoon called Rocket and a tree-like humanoid named Groot. The
three are joined along with way by a green-skinned female assassin, Gamora, and the
muscular and poetic Drax. The unlikely fivesome takes on all manner of space villains,
eventually saving the planet Xandar (whose leader is played by a near albino Glenn
Close) from the ruthless Darth Vader-like Ronan.
Its all headily contemporary CGI-driven sci-fi stuff, with space battles, a plethora
of alien rogues and a lot of pseudo-scientific mumbo-jumbo. But none of that really
matters. Who cares if any of the worlds or their inhabitants are believable when the
action and the dialogue are this much fun?
Part of the reason for Guardians success is that the characters are so finely drawn and
the films casting department does such a good job of matching skilful actors with the
leading roles. Chris Pratt (Parks and Recreation) is a revelation as Peter Quill (a.k.a.
Star-Lord). He combines the right balance of brawn, smartass intelligence, and devilmay-care humour. Comedy is often a side feature of the Marvel Cinematic Universe
films, usually providing a sardonic commentary on the real-world issues that the films
deal with. Here, comedy takes front and centre stage.
The interactions between Quill, Drax (professional wrestler Dave Bautista), Rocket
(voiced by Bradley Cooper), and Groot (Vin Diesel), are often hilarious, and while
Gamora (Star Treks Zoe Saldana) is not given as many funny lines, the dialogue
crackles when the five extra-terrestrial misfits are onscreen together.
The screenplay by Nicole Perlman and director James Gunn is as compelling and
as smart as any of the films Marvel forebears. The sporadic references to 1970s and
80s pop culture (There is an amusing contemplation of the universal significance of
the Kevin Bacon film Footloose in one sequence.) save the film from taking itself too
seriously.
Guardians of the Galaxy wont pick up many Academy Award nominations (outside
the technical/animation categories), but it does have a great soundtrack for those
feeling nostalgic for the Seventies. The films strength lies in allowing its audience to
sit back and lose itself in a silly story about oddball space cowboys (and girls) causing
mayhem across the universe. Since a sequel has already been announced for release in
the summer of 2017, that is clearly enough for more than half a billion of this planets
residents.

Finances
In Focus
By Michael Wright / Edward D Jones
As an investor, you may find that the elements of your portfolio that seem to draw
most of your attention are stocks and bonds. After all, these investment vehicles, and
others derived from them, provide you with potential growth and income opportunities which is why you invest in the first place. Yet, you also may find significant
value in a more humble financial asset: cash. In fact, you might be surprised at the
various ways in which the cash, and cash equivalents, in your portfolio can help you
complete your financial picture.
One way to understand the uses of cash is to look at the USES of cash. In other
words, consider the acronym USES:
U for Unexpected expenses and emergencies Youll need sufficient cash for
situations such as a job loss, a home repair or an unplanned medical expense. During
your working years, you should keep three to six months worth of living expenses in a
cash account specifically designed to meet unexpected expenses. Once youre retired,
you may be able to get by on a smaller emergency fund up to three months worth
of living expenses, although you will need more for everyday spending.
S for Specific short-term savings goal Are you anticipating a big expense a
wedding (once they become legal), a week in Palm Springs, a down payment on a new
home, etc. sometime within the next few years? If so, youll want to set aside sufficient cash, with the exact amount depending on your specific short-term goal.

larger percentage of your portfolio than you had intended possibly bringing with it
more risk than you had intended, too. As a general rule, no single investment should
take up more than a small percentage of your entire portfolio.
Your own life may also send you some messages regarding changes you may need to
make to your investment and financial strategies. Here are just a few of the milestones
that may trigger necessary moves:
New relationship Is he the one? If so, then you will want to consider how and
when to include him (or her) in your financial life. This is especially true if you get
legally married in one of the forward-thinking states where this is already legal (like
Illinois, Maine or California, just to name three).
New job Assuming your new job offers you a retirement plan, such as a 401(k) or
similar vehicle, youll have some choices to make. How much can you afford to contribute? How should you allocate your dollars among the investment choices offered
in the plan? How can you best integrate your 401(k) or other plan into your overall investment portfolio to avoid duplication? Also, do not forget stock options, which some
firms do offer. They allow you to invest a portion of your pay into the firms stock, but
think carefully and do some research. Just because you work somewhere does not
mean they have a good or bad stock record, so find out more before you invest, which
is a good idea with any stock purchase.
Impending retirement As you enter retirement, you may want to adjust your portfolio to help reduce its short-term fluctuations and to provide more current income
opportunities. At the same time, you may still need to invest for growth you could
be retired for two or three decades, and youll need to stay ahead of inflation.
Pay close attention to the messages coming from your portfolio and from your life.
These signals will give you a good idea of when its time to make the right investment-related moves.

E is for Everyday spending It goes without saying that youll need adequate
cash for your everyday spending needs groceries, utilities, entertainment, mortgage/
debt payments, and so on. Of course, while youre working, you will probably handle
most of these costs with your paycheques, but you may still need to set aside one or
two months worth of living expenses.
Once youre retired, though, its a somewhat different story. While your expenses may
go down in some areas (such as costs associated with employment such as uniforms,
dress clothes or commuting to and from the job), they are likely to go up in others
(such as health care). So your overall cost of living may not drop much, if at all. Consequently, it may be a good idea to set aside 12 months worth of living expenses, after
incorporating other sources of income, such as Social Security and outside employment.
In addition, youll have to decide on the most efficient way of drawing on your other
sources of income, including Social Security and investment accounts such as an IRA,
a 401(k), etc. Its especially important to create a sustainable withdrawal strategy for
your investment portfolio because you dont want to run the risk of outliving your
money.
S is for Source of investment Youll want to have some cash available in your
portfolio perhaps 2% to 3% of the portfolios value to take advantage of investment opportunities as they arise. Also, having even a small percentage of your portfolio devoted to cash can modestly improve your overall diversification and a diversified portfolio is your best defense against market volatility. (Keep in mind, though,
that diversification cant guarantee a profit or protect against loss.)
So, there you have it: four key USES of cash. Taken together, they provide some good
reasons to keep at least a modest stream of liquid assets in your portfolio. Speaking
of which, just as Mother Nature sends out signals to indicate a change in seasons
falling leaves, colder temperatures, shorter days, etc. your portfolio will frequently
tell you when you need to make adjustments. Here are a couple of indicators you
may want to heed:

The Works, an Indianapolis social and health

club catering to gay and bisexual men, operating
24-7, seeks responsible and reliable individuals
for both full and part time cash register and general maintenance/cleaning positions.

Out-of-balance portfolio Even the best stocks can lose value when the overall market is down, but if you only own stocks, you could take a big hit during a downturn
and if it happens repeatedly, you may find it hard to even stay invested. After all,
stocks will always fluctuate in value, and protection of your principal is not guaranteed. Yet you can at least help defend yourself against market volatility by balancing
your portfolio with a mix of cash, stocks, bonds, government securities, certificates of
deposit (CDs) and other investments, with the percentage of each type of asset based
on your individual goals, time horizon and risk tolerance.
Overweighting of individual investments Related to the point made above, you
can also have too much money kept in a single investment, such as an individual stock
or bond. Sometimes, this overweighting can happen almost on its own, as when a
stock, or stock-based vehicle, has increased so much in value that it now takes on a

Pink In
The Sheets
By Mz. Pink / Word Columnist
Dear Mz. Pink,
I am a proud lesbian, but I am not out to anyone yet. I am actually not sure how to
come out to my friends and family. Im worried because my family is very religious and I
know that this could go one of two ways, either they accept me or they dont.
The other issue is, I am very religious also. I consider myself a devout Christian. That
being said, I know how I feel for women, but I feel guilty all the time. Its an awful feeling,
I feel like Im lying to myself and my family and friends. What should I do?
How can I make amends with myself, my religion and my family (if necessary)? How do
I find a comfortable medium with my religious background and my sexuality? I still love
women and have no desire to be with a man, but I just dont see an easy path ahead.
Christian Queer, Indy
Dear Christian,
Coming out can be one of the most difficult tasks a person has to deal with, especially
if religion plays a part in this process. However, you can prepare yourself for the
outcomes that may arise. You always want to be as prepared for something like worst
case scenarios as possible. But first you need to be right with yourself:
Step one, establish where you are with your religion. Do you really believe that samesex love and relations are evil? Do you believe you are condemned to hell if you love
another woman? When you are with another woman, does your religion (or God)
forgive you? Do you always ask for forgiveness?
You can have both religion and homosexual acceptance. Its how you react and interact
with your religion and your God. You have to be right with yourself and accept that
who you are is not evil and how you feel and who you love is not bad before you can
embark on this process. If are are unsure of your conviction of who and what you are
then you will be easily swayed by your self-inflicted guilt. In other words, you dont
want to agree with your branch of Christianity saying homosexuality is a sin if you
dont believe that to be true.
Step two, prepare for the worst and have a back-up plan. Make sure you have security
for yourself, a job or at least money, a place to stay and transportation. If you live with
your family and they kick you out, what will happen? You do not want to be a freeloader with your friends or live on the streets just because you love another woman. Of
course these things arent necessary, but wouldnt you feel better knowing that if you
had to leave you could and that youd be independent and strong?
Step three, have a plan to tell your parents the big news. Set up a time and place;
decide if you are going to tell them together or separately. Also, are you going to tell
your friends first? Go somewhere you are comfortable and able to talk. Try not to
make the place too public, just in case the conversation gets heated. Be prepared for
your parents to yell, cry, quote scripture and lay on the guilt. These things are ways of
dealing with life-changing news. Try to stay calm and hold your ground. Remember
this is a process for them, too. Whatever you do, dont beat around the bush (no pun
intended). Say what you want to say and mean what you say.

Step four, be willing to walk away and revisit the conversation if necessary. This could
be after they or you have calmed down or until you feel the time is right for a follow
up conversation.

Step five, follow up. Following up is important because it will not let your parents
be in denial. It will remind them that you are lesbian and that you havent and wont
change your mind. Inform them of how you still feel about your religion. Offer to
go to a church group or P-FLAG group in your area to help them accept the fact that
you are who you are and show them there are other parents out there that may feel the
same way as them.
This can work and this can work in your favour, but it can also take work on your and
your parents part. Give them time to process, but dont give up on them entirely. If
they disown you or claim to never want to see you again, try to go with the flow and
revisit the process in a few days or weeks. Dont give up and dont feel bad for who you
are. Mz. Pink.

The Net

Will that be wheat or white? Sweet tea or unsweetened? Cash or charge? Debit or
credit? Whole milk or 2%?
Every day in life we are faced with choices and often subconsciously make them, but
few are going to be as long-lasting or as costly (or money-saving) as all the ones which
seem to be bombarding us now with the advent of the new iPhone 6 and the Droids
which are on the market. What I refer to is not only the choice of changing phones and
upgrading (now or later) but the wide and ever-widening choice of calling plans and
packages which almost all of the major providers are just going nuts to sell us.
Do you want to just wait for the two-year old standard time frame and then upgrade?
Theres a plan for that.
Rather have that iPhone 6 now, but have months left on the old 5C or Droid you
bought last year? Plans for that.
Wanna pay nothing now, but willing to get a few extra bucks a month added to the cell
bill in trade for upgrading to the latest, greatest now? They got that.
And what about upgrading now to an iPhone 6, then getting to upgrade again next
year or anytime something new arrives? Yep, theres a plan for that out there, too.
But as Don Pardo used to say on The Price Is Right: Thats not all, Bill!
There are now a myriad of plans based around not what most folks think of a cell
phone for at all calling but based on data (browsing, texts, etc.) as the major
firms have started a data price war. While there are no bullets flying, there are offers
in every newspaper, mailbox and on every TV and radio station promising everything
from free calls from Europe and Canada to unlimited data and even cash being
dangled to buy you out of that old plan you might have elsewhere.
So what to do? What option to take?
The first thing is take a chill pill and relax. Many of the so-called best offers are really
not that good at all. Also, my dads old bromide rings true here: Are you gonna pay
me now or will you pay me later? In other words, at the end of the day you are going
to have to hand some cash to whichever phone provider you pick, both for the actual
phone and the data.

Check out www.

broadbandchoices.
co.uk (where we got the chart just above) and you might be amazed at how doing even
the simplest thing can rack up the megabytes of data used.
And to make matters worse, in our ever-more-mobile society theres only one way
to pay for the towers needed to provide all that bandwidth your and my cell bills.
Watch out or while you might roll over half the 700 minutes your plan gives a month
and end with plenty of texts left you could be faced with large overcharges for data.

You can choose to do so in monthly add-on charges or all at once or something inbetween, but trust dad, you will end up making the firm a profit albeit a good
chance that profit will be smaller than it used to be before choices rained down like
a Summer shower but they got to make money on you or why would they be in
business?

Want even worse news? Try leaving the country. While some plans and firms (most
notably T-Mobile) are good to you when you leave the US of A with that phone, other
companies (at&t here gets the black eye) hit you with costly data plans, charges,
overages and what this writer feels is an almost unfair set of draconian fees for even
downloading one photo to Facebook or a single tune from iTunes when outside the
country. The other major providers Verizon and Sprint fall somewhere between
the above extremes, but cross the border to Canada or fly off to England at your bank
accounts peril!

In other words, at the end of whatever you do or sign, its a bet: You versus your
phones service provider. They are betting you dont chew and spit out enough texts,
calls and data to break them and you are betting that you will. Think of it as an allyou-can-eat Chinese buffet or a one-size-fits-all (which usually ends up fitting none).
No matter what you or they do, its a game and chances are you will end up losing.
Remember the big phone service providers are not in business to lose money.

And finally, theres one other set of things you might not have thought of, and they
include what constitutes a family plan, what youll pay to get out of an old contract if
you wanna move and keep your number and what a phone can do. Some phones look
like others on the outside, but there are several very different ways they grab the calls
and data. Take an iPhone from one firm and try to use it on another and it may or
may not be compatible.

So what to do?

Want to have Firm A buy out whats left of your contract with Firm B so you can
move now? In some cases you will get enough money to pay off A from B...in other
cases not so much so. And a lot of folks forget (before they leave one provider for
another) to ASK their current provider what they can or might be able to do. Say, for
example, you go to Canada a lot but use a costly foreign service provider. Ask their
representative (in person or on that toll-free customer service line) if they can suggest
a calling plan to save you cash or flat out tell them I need what you do not offer, can
you negotiate to discount this? If not I plan to leave. Youd be surprised what you can
get IF you are current on the bill, a customer in good-standing and have been with
them awhile. And do not take the first no as a final answer. If you dont like what
you hear from the flunky, ask for a supervisor. Be firm, but polite. And keep in mind
sometimes theres nothing they can do so go on and switch. But other times they can
help. Give them a chance and you might be pleasantly surprised!
Like shoes, or cash or charge or white or wheat or every other choice we make, one
size does not fit all. Do your homework and then make an informed decision.

First bit of sage advice: Get all the plans and read the offers thoroughly. By that I
mean line-for-line including that small print stuff. Early cut-off penalties, a bounced
cheque or late payment might screw the whole deal. Poor credit? Maybe no deal at all.
Late pay with the old cell provider or a damaged or lost phone? You might not be able
to even come to the table.
Next, make a list (in writing really) of what you need or want. Things will be a LOT
different if you are just shopping voice and some basics, like text, than if you want
a smart phone which is really more of a mini hand-held computer with all the same
features as your desktop and a hunger for roaming data.
The latter item data is where the real competition is these days. There are old
grandfathered-in data plans you cant buy now (but with pokey speeds if you pass a

File this under Things I Never, Ever Thought Id See.
The Religion News Service has reported the formation of a new organisation called
And I am not making this up Evangelicals for Marriage Equality. It was launched on
Tuesday, 9th September and immediately began collecting signatures from evangelicals who support same-sex marriage. Its advisory board includes several evangelical luminaries: author and speaker Brian McLaren, former National Association of Evangelicals vice president Richard Cizik and former USAID faith adviser Chris LaTondresse.
Some of you may recall news articles awhile back, when Cizik resigned from his position with the National Association of Evangelicals, citing his support for same-sex civil
unions.
It is immensely heartening to see significant evangelicals come to a realisation that if
the institution of marriage is good for society, and good for opposite-sex couples, it
should be equally good for same-sex couples. This new organisation is yet another expression of the growing recognition that fidelity and stability require social acceptance
that when you demonise people, when you deny them respect and equal civil rights,
you are encouraging destructive behaviours.
So you may be late to the party, Evangelicals for Marriage Equality, but we certainly
welcome you.

That said, there may also be an element of self-preservation in this sudden turnaround. Over the past few years, membership in these conservative churches has been
declining. Young Christians, especially, have rejected a theology that seemed to place
homophobia at the very centre of its belief structure.
Polling has confirmed that the demographic split that characterises the broader American society is equally pronounced among adherents of conservative and evangelical
Christianity. Not that young evangelicals are leading the charge to embrace equal
rights for their lesbian, gay, bi & trans peers, but they are demonstrably less homophobic than their elders and changing (for the better) with dizzying rapidity.

Panthers
Perspective
By Panther Daddy / Word Columnist
As a senior member of our community, I sometimes find myself questioning, How
did I get here ?
Much like being caught up in the twister that landed the little pig-tailed farm girl in a
strange new land, I find myself in a place I do not recognise. When I look in the mirror,
I still see the man Ive always seen. In spite of the additional smile lines, sometimes
semi-bright eyes and the shaved head I currently sport, its me staring back in the
reflection. I think what has changed (in addition to the above mentioned inevitable
physical transitions) is how I perceive myself and how I am now perceived as a
community member.
Now, dont get me wrong, I have become very much a fan of being referred to as Sir.

This has been happening since I broached the age of 40, but as I am sailing into my
60s, it takes on an even more erotic dimension. My friends complain that being called
Sir makes them feel old. When a younger man calls me Sir, it resonates at the core of
my being. When a younger man calls me Daddy, it tugs at my heartstrings but also at
my ever increasing senior libido.
The scenes that play out in my head certainly depend on the young man addressing
me, how the term is being used and certainly the context, but overall, it gives me an
unusually powerful sense of affirmation. The feeling might be fleeting in its presence
but long-lasting in the afterglow of the encounter. It feels like after all this time of
exploring, experimenting and extrapolating, Ive finally become comfortable in my own
skin. I consider my presence and existence as an older gay man to be a gift, not just to
myself but also to the community in general.
There is something to be said about longevity. There are those who see it as a
threat, viewing it as a hinderance to progress and moving forward. Depending on
the circumstances and situation, theyre absolutely right. There are institutions and
beliefs that do need to go away. One example that comes to mind is segregation. At
some point in time, it served a purpose. As despicable as it was, it did serve a purpose.
However, as peoples beliefs about themselves and society in
general changed, its purpose was no longer relevant to the
developing circumstances.
Had that institution stayed intact, our ability to move forward
would be greatly hindered. However, there is another facet
to longevity that lends itself to stability and provides a firm
foundation on which to build new structures and systems.
Longevity isnt about being rigid. Longevity is about being
adaptable, fluid and yielding. I think it is these components that
are missing when we consider aging in the lesbian, gay, bi & trans
community and also the community at large.
As stated earlier, I consider my senior years a gift. Ive witnessed
and been a part of many changes in my time here on earth. Had
I not changed my attitudes and beliefs and behaviours around
certain things and circumstances, I probably wouldnt be here to
write this piece.
For those in the community with the myopic view that people
like me are a threat, perhaps you need to consider that you are
holding onto an outdated belief about what it means to be a gay
senior. Had I held onto the outdated beliefs of what it meant to be
a black man or a gay man, I would have missed opportunities to
grow in my knowledge of myself, my character, my skills and my
spirit. Continually quenching my thirst for life and experience has
allowed me to continue to grow, flourish and thrive. My presence
and that of those like me are not using up available resources or
preventing you from moving into what you consider to be your
rightful place. We are a resource available to you and you are
exactly where you need to be.
Like myself and those others who came before me, you have to
make a choice. In the words of the great Kung Fu Master: Choose
Wisely, Grasshopper. I know I did.
Until next month......

pecs
and
the
by Matt Ponder
When you step into a boxing ring, you know whats coming. Trust me. The wet slap
of a glove in your eye socket, the jaw-rattling right cross that shakes your teeth inside
your mouth guard, the blows that rain across your ribs and abs and the burn of the
ropes on your back when you are corralled by your opponent. The pain is real and
bright and you knew it was waiting for you. Its kind of like the feeling right before you
get a shot or have a cavity filled. You know whats coming, you see the needle and the
pain follows, just like it is supposed to.
No one wants to see pain coming, and as you live your life day-to-day, you spend most
of it avoiding any unnecessary discomfort. When the time comes that you meet someone who ignites your heart, you automatically follow suit and do what you have to do
to avoid any pain.
Everyone has something to hide. Whether its a secret crush or a hidden rage or a
crippling emotional problem, it can lay buried beneath layers of money and designer
clothes, well-honed muscle and sexual prowess or a frozen smile that masks the real
feeling inside.
Sometimes our true nature bubbles to the surface usually when we least expect it.
The crush is revealed after a couple of drinks, the rage is ignited over a tiny slight or
the emotional barrier stays steadfast even though you are in the warm, safe confines of
a relationship.
So why do we hide the things that make us human? Why do we hide the beat of our
heart and the truth in our soul? Because we are all afraid of getting hurt.
So how do we avoid the pain? Some people become someone else, leaving their true
nature behind to make someone happy. They deny who they really are to become
someone else; someone they believe is the one their partner wants. Thats not to say
that some people cant keep an open mind and try new things with a new partner, but
some people completely transform themselves into a false representation of who they
are and what they want in order to keep the relationship alive.
Some people say things they dont mean because they believe its what the other person
wants to hear.

you will say something? Hiding from pain means losing the opportunity to find something spectacular in another human being.
Pain doesnt always count on someone else. There are the hidden fears that we
disguise so even the general public thinks we are something we are not. The pain of
hiding what we truly are: a sensitive poet, a terrified virgin or even a checkered past
can be immense. The poet becomes a callous smartass, the virgin trumpets endless
fictional conquests and the person with the skeletons in their closet reinvents himself
with a bright and shining halo.
But we all know who we are when we look in the mirror, dont we? All of us lie in the
dark with whatever secrets that weigh heavy on our hearts while trying to avoid the
pain that may come from revealing our true faces.
When we tell people we are something were not, we lose our identities in what they
want us to be. When someone rejects you or laughs at you or merely ignores your existence altogether, its not because there is something wrong with you, its because what
they want and what they truly need is not reflected in you. And if it is, and they cant
acknowledge that, then they are the ones hiding from pain. They are the ones denying themselves the joy of finally being able to be themselves with you because they are
afraid.
The saying goes that misery loves company. Well guess what? Fear loves it, too. When
someone tells you that you cant achieve what you want, sometimes its because they
are living with the fear of failure themselves. When someone tells you that you are not
good enough for them, sometimes it means that they are afraid you might decide that
they arent good enough for you. When someone tells you that your relationship is
over, sometimes they are afraid that because they truly love you, they might lose you
somewhere down the line.
Why suffer and face the pain, when fear is easier to live with? Or is that even living?
Lets face it; most people are living their lives without an ounce of courage. What you
have to realise is that courage is not the absence of fear, but realising that something
is more important than fear. Its not just that we fear that we arent good enough or
smart enough or pretty enough, its that we fear how amazing we can truly be. Its
scary to be awesome. Believe me, I should know. But giving up fear means you have to
embrace the pain that will definitely head your way. See, without pain, without sacrifice, we have nothing. Pain is what makes us human. Pain illuminates us and guides us
and forces us up off the mat to fight again.
While we are drowning in pain, it blinds us, trying to trick us to see if we are strong
enough to live to fight another day. When it passes, we are triumphant. We can see for
miles and our heads clear of the clouds of doubt. How much pain you feel is usually
directly proportionate to how much you feel the emotion it is linked with: whether its
the dedication you have to achieving a goal or the capacity to love with all your heart.
Pain can be the best teacher you have ever had. Because anything worth having,
whether its love or freedom or a knockout in the third round, is worth every drop of
pain that leaks from your body. Fear no pain. And find out who you truly are.

They say: I love you when they are not sure if thats what they are feeling.
They say: That sounds fun, even though its something they hate.
They say: Everythings fine even though it isnt.
Saying everything is fine is something we do every day. People say: How are you? and
we say: Fine, thanks, even when we are the furthest thing from it. Can you imagine
if everyone answered honestly when they were asked how they were doing? No one
would get anything done, and we would end up sharing our personal lives with complete strangers. Maybe that is why we do it.
When someone you dont know asks you how you are doing, what do you think they
would say if you said: My dog just died or My boyfriend just broke up with me or
even if you went the other direction and said: Im awesome I just got a blowjob in
the parking lot of the gym. The reason is that fine is what people want to hear. So
thats our programmed response. To hide how we truly feel.
We hide things in other ways, too. A crush on someone you see every day in the gym or
behind the counter at a bookstore or a coffee shop or even walking past your window.
Do we say anything? Not likely. And why is that? To avoid the pain of being rejected
or finding out they are already connected or even the fact that they dont share your
sexuality. So we say nothing and daydream of what it would be like to talk to them, to
hold their hand or to kiss them as rain pours down around you.
The problem with this situation is simple: what if none of that is true? What if they are
just like you, timing their workouts to coincide with yours, drinking coffee they dont
even want just to see you or taking the route past your window in hopes that one day

Metro is the first Indy gay club to take part in a new 360-degree view programme. "Google's Business View is a powerful tool to show off our city's world
class culture. They've made it possible for anyone with a cell phone to "See Inside" Indy. It's an honour for our team to document Indy's cultural districts,
businesses, landmarks, museums and institutions for Google Maps," account manager Melyssa Hubbard recently told The Word.

Hello and thanks for checking out the Music Corner, where we take a look at trends in
the dance music world. This month, it is All About the Bass, with new mixes being
released for Meghan Trainors Summer sleeper hit of the same name. All the clubs will
be spinning this one for a minute.
I was surprised to hear that Armand Van Helden has released a remix of Sam Smiths
new single Im Not the Only One. Armand doesnt release a lot of remixes, so it is
exciting for me to get this record out to the dance floor. Gorgon City drops their new
Album Sirens on the 6th of October, too. This album includes several previously
released songs like Here for You and Ready for Your Love. Its current single is
Imagination which will also be an early evening or chill out song.
Now lets check out some other great releases from around the world.

excessive machine to get rid of the pain of watching this! With fifty seven million
views on Youtube though, someone found this video interesting. I do love the song,
however, and it is club and radio ready. It should do really well.
Mary Lambert Secrets. Seattle-based Mary Lambert has released promotional
remixes of her new song Secrets. The mix I like is done by the sexy deejay Danny Verde
and has a great rhythmic sound that is easy to dance to. Lambert, who co-wrote and
sang vocals on the song Same Love for Macklemore is an avid writer and poet. This is
a great song for her in that she often writes about her personal experiences in dealing
with sexuality and growing up in a religious family.
The video is super fun with a panning technique used to move from scene to scene.
The mixture of visual material seems to want to introduce Mary to a wider audience
which I think works really well with the song. This is the lead single for her new album
Heart on My Sleeve which will be out 14th October.
Charlie XCX Break The Rules. Another big star in the making is Charlotte
Aitchison. After co-writing huge hits like Icona Pops I Love It and Iggy Azaleas Fancy
along with her own hit Boom Clap, Charlie is about to debut a new full length album
titled Suckers 21st October. Break The Rules is the second single and is a catchy,
pop explosion of a tune that will hit radio hard in the coming months. I look for
dance remixes to show up soon for this one from major re mixers as the release date
approaches. The video has already dropped and features a high school experience in
the early Britney Spears Oops I Did it Again motif. The lyrics getting high and getting
wrecked will surely have parents up in arms, too, which does wonders for sales. So
what does XCX mean? It was her original MSN screen name and stood for Kiss Charlie
Kiss.
Hey be sure and check out all your favourite music artists at your local clubs. There are
so many talented deejays in the booths here in the Midwest. Wherever I go I am truly
privileged to hear great music, but we need you to support the club culture, too. Dont
be afraid to get out there on the dance floor and work it! Now I need to get back to
building the new club. Yep, MJs On Jefferson in Dayton should be open by the end of
the month. It has taken over a year to gut and build out the space and nearly four years
of planning to get this new club together. It is now finally here this Month!

Mary J. Blige Right Now. Mary J. is back in a big way this year. Earlier this Spring
she released a song called F For You on Disclosures Grammy nominated album Settle.
She has now teamed up with them again to produce a new song included on an entire
new album tentatively known as The London Sessions.
Right Now is co-written by Disclosure, Sam Smith and Jimmy Napes. Other song titles
that have leaked are Pick Me Up produced by Naughty Boy and written by Blige and
Emeli Sande and Therapy produced by Jimmy Napes and co-written by Jimmy Napes
and Sam Smith. Right Now is a similar outing to Whitney Houstons Its Not Right, But
Its OK and should get some great dance floor remixes to push the album.
I am so glad to see Mary J. putting out some new material with great young producers
and writers behind it. However I would be hard pressed to change my opinion about
my favourite Blige remix, 1995s You Bring Me Joy (E Smooves Joyous Club Mix).
Ariana Grande F/Zedd Break Free. Ms. Grande steps out of the pop princess role
and into the EDM arena with this Zedd and Max Martin produced banger. I am not sure
who has a hotter career right now, Ariana or Iggy. Ariana seems to have more in the
tank for the foreseeable future.
The video is a space filled Barbarella style jaunt with Zedd at the ship controls and
Ariana floating around in a revealing space suit. Someone needs to place me in the

Gossip
Cats
By Gossipcats Britain & Sydney

Soooo....October is finally here...the month of pumpkins, witches (of which we got

plenty both good and bad!) and we pussies best buds anywhere black cats. After
we say keep your heads down and all the best to those pussies, well look at whats
been in the mailbox this month... And well start with a note from Metros assistant
manager Ruth who got some rocks in her oatmeal big-time while tending the
upstairs bar recently. Heres what she posted to Facebook and shared with we felines:
So I had a junior customer come up at the height of my rush last night when I had
a line wrapped around the bar and say, Whats good here? I replied, Everything,
what can I get for you?to which he responds, Well, what drinks do you have?At
this point, I was...over it. I said, Sugar, youve been in line for 20 minutes. If thats
not enough time to decide what you want to drink, me listing off the entire cocktail
menu right now isnt going to do a damn thing. Now decide what you want or move on,
because I have a hundred people behind you waiting for me.He ordered a Long Island.
(Of course he did.)Then, he wrote C*NT in the tip line of his credit card and walked
off.I felt like Id won a prize. As of last report she had the guys credit receipt (which
does, you know just in case he forgot, contain a name) and she has his face indelibly
etched into her psyche. If we cats were him, wed stay clear because if you really think
our pal Ruth is a C*NT you might not like the witches brew she mixes up for you at
her bar the next time at all! Just sayin... Speaking of saying, one Midwest town was
all abuzz recently when the owner of one of the local watering holes posted the
following (name of club omitted) looking for help: XXX is looking to hire full time
bartenders and servers. At this time we are interviewing people with at least one year
of experience in the bar/restaurant industry. Please have good customer service skills
and a strong work ethic. Do not waste anyones time if you have done meth, heroin,
spice or had a blood alcohol content of .20 or greater in the past 48 hours. Pot usage
is not an issue unless it has fried your brain. If you are one of the people who still
qualify for one of our open positions, we look forward to meeting you! Applications are
available and interviews are available every morning, 7 days a week... The ad brought
a lot of chuckles around the area, but the best comment that reached we pussies was
from a local wag who said, Well, that must be a new set of policies. Its very obvious
since aint none of the current staff over at Club XXX who could meet those rules!
Amen, brother, amen! ...Speaking of amens, a special shout-out to straight friend
Marianne who while watching a well-known local gay boy eat a bowl of Tortellini
and complaining about the fact that some of them were mis-shapen said, Well,
not all the holes are ever the same size, you know! A full second of dead silence passed
at the table before the peals of laughter started to ring out! No report as to whether
or not he has been able to get the sauce he spat out laughing so hard out of his shirt
and H&M shorts, but hes telling everybody its sap from a bench he sat on at a picnic!
...Speaking of shirts, we hear tell that there are a LOT of stuffed ones out there,
meaning self-important folks are everywhere. One such person was all POed with
some of last months musings in this column but despite his protestations, lost a lot of
his importance (along with that of his friends) when he was voted out as head of well,
er, ah, we wont say. We will say good bye to him. Good luck to him. And good riddance
to him, too. Please do not let the door hit ya on the way out! ...Speaking of out, when
will a certain very hot Indianapolis waiter finally kick open the door, crawl over
the shoes and see the light of day? Wed say where he works, but we cats owners are
still banned (five+ years later) from one Mass. Ave. eatery for talking by name about one
of their gay former employees, so lets not do that again, shall we?...And speaking of
employees, we were very saddened (as were Ted & Ivan) to learn that long-time
English Ivys manager Brock Mehringer has handed in his notice. He told us he
expects to move on about the first of November, but will stay till the first of the year if
need be. The reason hes leaving? Very admirable: to attend IUPUI full-time and finish
his degree so he can get him a real job. Seems that studying, getting good grades and
running a bar (think late, late hours) is just a bit more than anyone can handle. We,
the boys and the whole community wish Brock well and a fond farewell hes a true
gentleman and a gem and will be missed. Oh, and whats going on over at Ivys and who
will be taking his executive parking space? None other than Chuck, the clubs owner,
who is landing back in Indianapolis (afterall, he was a pilot) from Seattle to be handson for the foreseeable future we cats were told. A big welcome back Chuck and we
look forward to working with you again whiskers-to-face!... Also over at Ivys theyve
welcomed back a long-time staffer to the wait crew after spending more than his fair
share of time in Anderson. Good to see you back, hun! ...And finally, we hear the diva
who got a lotta free PR from us last month (the one not welcome at a whole slew
of places) has been too busy to bother to read the column which had her in its
starring role. Ah well, maybe hell catch us this time or maybe (since we hear hes still
a busy boy) well have more news next issue! Meow!

Food For
Thought
By Ted Fleischaker / Word Publisher
There was an old, old 1980s ad for Remington shavers where Victor Kiam, the guy on
the ad said, I liked the shaver so much, I bought the company. Maybe you are old
enough to recall that and maybe not, but if you do recall it, then the experience of Rob
and Shelly Odendahl will seem familiar.
Rob worked as one of the project managers on the Villaggio condos, where Virginia
Avenue, East Street and South Street all meet. Its the luxury condo building which
was developed a few years back. After he helped the Page family build the place, he
changed roles and went to work as manager, selling the condos, but then the real
estate market went south.
All the while, in the back of his mind, and that of his wife, Shelly, was always the
dream to own their own restaurant. Thus it was a natural that when a national pizza
place, which leased in the Villaggios retail space on the first floor, called it quits,
Odendahl jumped at the chance and opened Ember Urban Eatery at 435 Virginia
Avenue.
We had our first taste during the recent Summer Devour Downtown and came away
loving it. And weve been back since with friends and customers. While our 2nd visit
was not quite the rave we had the first time more on that in a minute we did
enjoy the place and will definitely be returning.
The menu is somewhere between casual dining, upscale dining and there is a carry-out
component which is perfect for the location, too about halfway between downtown
and Fountain Square and right across the road from Lilly. There probably is not a
much better spot to put a restaurant. Theres also free parking right out front, and on
warm days, outdoor dining on the Villaggios porch is pleasant. But lets be honest: the
biggest thing at any restaurant is the food. And Ember gets a 95 out of 100 from us.
The reason for the 5% missing is that a grilled cheese partner Ivan had on our second
visit was soggy. Grilled cheeses, even with tomatoes on them, should not be soggy. But
that blip on the radar mentioned, the rest of the menu is first-class. We thoroughly
enjoyed some of the Devour specials, including the Eggplant Parmigiana which was,
as they say, to die for. The sad part is that it was a seasonal special only during
Devour so you cant get it year round. It easily beats that we have had at Buca, betters
that we have had at Iozzos and most anywhere else. It was really THAT good, so we
are putting eggplant season on our calendars for next Spring.
So what can you get right now? The menu ranges from classic burgers (they did do
our extra rare as requested and it was juicy and delicious) to a 10-ounce rib eye and a
pork BBQ. They also have some of the starters we enjoyed on the first visit continuing,
including some wonderfully spicy (but not overdone) urban wings, which the menu
describes at one dozen premium chicken wings, house-smoked and prepared to
perfection. The price is $10.50 and they are fantastic and very sharable. They also
have carried over the spinach artichoke dip ($8) with tortilla chips and several of the
other items we sampled on the Devour visit.
We were also interested after reading a bit on the menu regarding it to find out about
Saturday mornings. Ember opens from mid-morning until noontime for brunch,
though asking Rob for details brought word that its not doing all that well and might
be dropped. We want to go try it but the hours (8.30-11.30 a.m.) on Saturdays are just
a bit too early in our way of thinking, so hope the owners take our suggestion it go
say 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to better accommodate weekend sleep schedules. If the food on
that buffet is anything like what we had on the menu recently, its something I and my
household wish to try, even if it does mean a bit earlier alarm clock than currently.
Two other things we would try over and over again are the desserts and the service.
There was some awesome cheesecake (Not overstated and not understated and
proclaimed by a fellow journalist recently moved to Indy from LA via NYC as some
of the best I have had anywhere.) and there was a bevy of other choices. The hours
are till 11 weeknights, so if you have say a game or concert and get out early, were
thinking dessert and a coffee here for sure.
As far as service, it was wonderful. It did two of my favourite things all at once
showed attentiveness without a staffer hovering over the table waiting to pounce. The
tea glasses got filled, the check got delivered and the things a good server should do
got done, all without us feeling we were being watched by the NSA. Bravo for that!
To quote from the Embers website and say this is probably the most honest and
complete website weve seen lately, Ember is a quaint sixty seat restaurant serving a
variety of menu items. It is American fare, plated nicely and well-priced. Most of all, it
is a place where you feel at home. We agree 100%.
Ember is adjusting hours as these words hit print but as of now its 11 a.m. to 11
p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays; Saturday mornings for the brunch then reopened
for dinner from 5 p.m. Rob and Shelly get a well-earned weekend by being closed
Sundays and Mondays.
