RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
University of Oklahoma, Norman OK
Graduate Research Assistant (August 2007 December 2013)
Experienced with setting up labs and ensure smooth lab operations. Also selected to be the person in charge of the
lab when the primary investigator is not in town (over more senior colleagues).
Experienced with small organic synthesis, including design, execute, analyze, assessment, improvise, and optimization.
The small molecules synthesized includes:
o Synthesis of polymer model compounds. The model compounds synthesized were mainly nitrogen based,
oxygen based, or compounds with both nitrogen and oxygen atoms in them. The model compounds were
used to study possible lithium ion coordination on polymers.
o Synthesis of monomers for polymerization reactions. The monomers were for polymerization reactions of
new polymers from ground up.
o Synthesis of ligand functional groups to be attached to polymers for polymer modification.
o Synthesis of asymmetric acyclic carbonates. A simple and convenient method to produce asymmetric
acyclic carbonates was discovered. The acyclic carbonates were used in the Compensated Arrhenius
Formulation (CAF) studies that led to a publication in the American Chemical Society (ACS) journal.
o Synthesis of cyclic carbonates with varying tail lengths. The cyclic carbonates were used in another study
that produces another publication in an ACS journal.
Experienced with polymer synthesis and modification reactions:
o Synthesis of poly(ethylene imine) (PEI) from poly(2-ethyl-1,3-oxazoline). The PEI is the main polymer
compound used in the group for many studies.
o Synthesis of poly(propylene imine) (PPI) from its monomers.
o Synthesis of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) oligomers for studies involving the Compensated Arrhenius
Formulation (CAF). Subsequent results were presented at an international conference in the summer of
2013.
o PEI modification reactions were performed by changing the pendant groups attached to the PEI-nitrogen.
Experienced with analytical instruments and techniques:
o Hands-on handling of infra-red (IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), ultraviolet (UV-Vis), gas
chromatography (GC/GC-MS), and liquid chromatography (LC/HPLC). Also experienced with column
chromatography and staining methods. These were mainly used to analyze the products synthesized.
Experienced with common as well as niche and exotic property measurement techniques:
o Gel-permeation chromatography (GPC), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used to analyze the
polymers synthesized.
o Pulsed-field gradient NMR technique was used to get the self-diffusion in liquids.
o Dielectric spectroscopy technique was used to obtain the dielectric constant and ionic conductivity in liquid
electrolytes. Other electrochemistry techniques were also applied to measure the conductivity in liquids and
solid polymer electrolytes.
Experienced with computational modelling software and techniques:
o Classical molecular dynamics simulations were performed on PEO and PEI model compounds to study lithium
ion coordination in PEO and PEI polymers. Ab-initio quantum calculations were used to get the charge
parameters for the simulations. The simulations led to further understanding of lithium coordination in
nitrogen and oxygen based electrolytes.
o Ab-initio quantum chemistry was used to obtain the equilibrium molecular structure of various compounds.
This information led to the discovery of the chemical structure versus ionic conductivity relationship, a goal
of so many researchers in the field.
Experienced in training undergraduate student researcher.
Experienced with writing technical reports as well as writing for journal publications.
Experienced with giving presentations:
o Two seminars a research seminar and a literature review seminar were given to the academic
community.
