Picking Fruit: A Taste of Tai Chi
Wednesdays, October 1, 8, 15, 22
6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Please let the Church office know if you plan to attend by Mon, Sept. 29.
A four week workshop giving participants a
chance to learn a bit of Tai Chi, an ancient Chi-
nese health system for balance, flexibility and
vitality. Participants will learn about the mental
components of Tai Chi (meditation) that allows
for the reduction of stress and increased focus
and mental clarity. Participants will also try a few exercises. The primary one is called
Picking Fruit and we will also have fresh fruit to share and enjoy (picked locally if
available!) Provided in partnership with the Lawrence Academy of Tai Qi (also a
501c3). The workshop will be facilitated by Trish Dowd Kelne. Trish Dowd Kelne is
the director of Winter Center for Restorative Justice, a nonprofit community outreach
organization. Trish has worked in the nonprofit setting for 15 years, with community
outreach, education and empowerment. She was co-chair of Martha and Marys Way,
an interfaith organization and has facilitated poetry and prayer classes for the retired
religious professionals. She is dedicated to faith based outreach. She is a certified in-
structor for the Academy of Tai Qi through which she teaches classes and semi-
nars. Trish received her degree in Creative Writing from Kansas State University, her
facilitation certification from Winter Center and her Tai Qi certification from HuoLong
Studios. This offering is provided through a partnership with Winter Center (a com-
munity non-profit) and Fredrikson Center for Faith and Church Vitality (part of Otta-
wa University).

Our Five Points of Spiritual Formation at First Baptist
Below are the Five Points of Spiritual Formation that our ministry team and our worship series have been developing.
Let us together follow the steps of Christ in the power of the Spirit, as we form and are formed by our Creator!
Spiritual Formation is about the whole person. Like the spokes on a wheel, God forms not just our spiritual part, but all
of us: our physical, intellectual, and emotional selves.
Spiritual Formation is about honest dialogue, questions, and conversation. Like sandpaper that irritates for the sake of re
-creation, we recognize that embracing scratchy doubts and questions is more formational than easy answers.
Spiritual Formation occurs as we are a teaching church. Handing off the baton to the next generation of leaders is a critical
part of who we are and how we form and are formed.
Spiritual Formation occurs as we are a partnering church. We know that we cannot do it all ourselves, and so we belay our-
selves (as with a carabiner) to other churches and organizations to partner to do the work of formation.
Spiritual Formation occurs within the context of relationships. Like Luke Skywalker, who saved the galaxy through his rela-
tionships with both peers and mentors, our formation happens with both like-minded peers and intergenerational mentor-
ing.

First Baptist Needs You to Lead!
FBC will be electing a slate of officers at the 2015 Annual Business Gathering in January. As the Nominating Committee
begins the process of filling these elected positions, we invite you to pray for the committee and the current leadership as
we prepare for 2015. We have eight Ministries at FBC: Deacons, Evangelism, Facilities, Finance, Missions, Membership,
Spiritual Formation, and Worship. For each of these Ministries, we elect a Chair, a Vice-Chair, and a Steward (or liaison to
the Spiritual Leadership Team.) In addition, there are four officers of the church who are a part of the Spiritual Leader-
ship Team: Moderator, Treasurer, Financial Secretary, and Clerk. And there are two additional standing committees with
elected leadership: Nominating and Staff Relations. Of course, many of these positions have been filled for the coming
year, but we would invite you to read through this list of Ministries and let us know if you have an interest in serving in an
elected or volunteer capacity in the upcoming year. And again, please pray for the Nominating committee and our church
leadership as we together ask where God is leading us this year and in the years ahead. Please contact Pastor Matt, Dawn
Trent, or Sally Heilman with any interests or questions you might have.
~Nominating Committee, Sally Heilman, Chair
