"#OA Blog
All,
The following was posted on an NTOA blog last night:
3 officers were involved in a shooting this week. An ambush was set up for the officers prior to
their arrival, the took fire while still in their cruisers. One officer was hit in the forearm, another
received wounds to his forehead from a ricochet, another was in!ured "N#$%. The suspect was armed
with a .&' handgun. The officers were armed with (lock ))*s and +,--. /01 gr. (old 2ot 3ollow
,oints.
Officers fired on the sub!ect and hit him in the left arm, completel shattering the bone. 3e was
also hit five times in the chest and abdomen. All rounds penetrated less than /4. All of the rounds
e5panded full but did not cause incapacitation due to the lack of penetration. According to the
6edical -5aminer, none of the rounds caused an life threatening in!uries. The sub!ect also
received one round into the front of his throat, it penetrated less than /4 as well. The 6edical
-5aminer stated that the recovered rounds were in pristine condition "still had rifling marks on
them%.
The sub!ect was wearing a down !acket at the time of the incident. 3e was finall taken down after
receiving rounds from an 67& .))3, with 3ornad Tap '' gr ballistic tip rounds and 3ornad Tap 8)
gr. 3ollow ,oints.
The officer with the 67& was able to shoot underneath a vehicle and hit the suspect in the ankle.
The officer then flanked the sub!ect, who continued to engage officers, and was eventuall killed b
the officer with the 67&.
The sub!ect had a trace amount of mari!uana in his sstem.
.ange between sub!ect and officers: )1 feet.
+ub!ect had a t7shirt on under his !acket.
+ub!ect received appro5imatel si5teen .))3 rounds, thirteen of these rounds went completel
through. One round struck his hip and completel shattered it. Another .))3 round struck his
aorta and another pierced and collapsed his lung. 9oth of these rounds lodged themselves inside
the sub!ect. The 6edical -5aminer stated that the .))3 rounds caused massive internal damage.
This is the second shooting that the ,2 has e5perienced where the had to shoot a sub!ect in e5cess
of ten times with .&1 +:; ammo to incapacitate or kill. There was another incident where a sub!ect
was shot inside of his vehicle. 3e was struck appro5imatel ten times, all the while continuing to
fire at officers. 3e was eventuall killed after suffering a shot to the back of his head. $n this same
incident, the back of the sub!ect*s seat was struck multiple times, the .&1 +:; rounds never
penetrated through the seat. $n this incident, all shots had passed through either the windshield or
rear window. $nvestigators assume that this was the reason for the poor ballistic performance.
"The% ,2 is now considering replacing their (lock ))*s with (lock )/*s.
