Iranianvoterswereintentonshowing

evenifRowhaniwantedtoimplement
evenmorefar-reachingchanges,Irans
currentpowerstructuregivesthe

therevolution,however,itsbecome
increasinglyobviousthatthesystem
establishedbyKhomeinihasossied
andisnowcorrespondinglybrittle.
Telimitedspacefordemocratic
participationoriginallyallowedbythe
rstgenerationofrevolutionarylead-
ershassteadilyyieldedtounvarnished
authoritarianism.

todayssupremeleader,AyatollahAli

Khameneihasconsistentlyfollowed
theKhomeinistprincipleofkeeping
realpowerconnedtoatinyelite.

presidentialelection,Khameneibroke
thelastlinkconnectinghisownrule
withthehallowedrevolution.Overthe
years,hehascometodependprimari-

fendtherevolutionfromitsenemiesat

tomakeafewmodestgesturesinthe

TeweaponsandmoneyfromQatarstrengthenedmilitant
groupsinLibya,reportedtheNew York Times,allowing
themtobecomeadestabilizingforcesincethefallofthe
Qadhagovernment.
InhisapparentSyriaabout-face,thepresidenthasbeen
eggedonbytheClintons.FormerSecretaryofStateHillary
ClintonhadalreadyproposedarmingtheSyrianrebels,
onlytoseecoolerheadsprevail.Herhusband,former
PresidentBillClinton,hasalsoclamoredforgreaterU.S.
involvement.
TeClintonsforeign-policyviewsarealignedwith
thoseofRepublicansenatorsJohnMcCainandLindsey
Graham.Hawksofafeatherockedtogetherinsupport
ofthebipartisanMendendez-Corkerbill,whichcontains
aprovisionforarmingSyrianrebelsandeasilypassedthe
SenateForeignRelationsCommittee.
TeonlyRepublicantovoteagainstthebillrebukedhis
colleagues.Tisisanimportantmoment,RandPaulsaid.

worldstillhasadangerousIrantocontendwith.Indeed,
Iranmayevenbemoredeadlybecauseofthemoderate
labelitspresidentnowhas.Whateverthenatureofhis
leadership,itwillbesubservienttothatofIranianSupreme
LeaderAyatollahKhamenei,whoalonecontrolsnuclear
