Pets and
pumpkins
A traditional Chinese
veterinary medicine approach

By Jodie Gruenstern, DVM, CVA

id you know that pumpkins are one of the most useful

vegetables for your carnivore cat and omnivorous dog?
Stock up in fall when they are plentiful and economical.
You will be amazed at how the incorporation of this food into
your pets menu can enhance his or her well-being!
The Chi Institute in Florida teaches acupuncture and food
therapy for animals. The principles are based on traditional
Chinese veterinary medicine (TCVM) philosophies. All living
things possess energy. Utilizing food energetics can be a guiding
principle to food selection and can even manipulate health. The
wrong food choice can damage health; the right food choice can
enhance wellness and repair.
The energetics of pumpkin is variable depending on the source
one reads. Why would this be?
According to Daverick Leggett, author of Helping Ourselves
and Recipes for Self-Healing, Many foods eaten in the West are

not known in China, so information about their properties is often

more speculative. Regional variations affect energetic properties.
Foods that are common in one culture may have a stronger effect
in a culture where they are more rare. Hybrid and genetically engineered plants will probably be weaker in their energetic effect.
Paul Pitchford, author of Healing with Whole Foods explains,
Raw food is more cooling than cooked food. Foods with blue,
green or purple colors are usually more cooling than similar foods
that are red, orange or yellow.
For these reasons, when one reads that pumpkin is cooling,
neutral, or warming, one must ask, are we discussing the pumpkin
flesh or pumpkin seeds, and is it raw, cooked, crushed or canned?
This lack of clarity leads to controversy as to the thermal energetics of pumpkin. Not to worry, you can judge the energetic impact
on your own individual pet.
All sources agree that pumpkin is a balancing, sweet, qi tonic.
It regulates blood circulation, and counteracts damp and phlegm.
A qi tonic is used to manage qi deficiency. Signs of qi deficiency
can include tiredness, loose stool, reduced appetite, shortness of
breath, weak voice and more.
Pumpkin has long been used as a stool-consistency regulator. In
my holistic veterinary practice, we commonly recommend canned
pumpkin to add bulk to loose stool for dogs, but conversely it will
soften and loosen stool for a kidney yin deficient constipated cat.
The proper regulation of stool consistency can have a huge impact

can be a part of a healthy, hairball
management routine for cats.

on proper defecation habits. A constipated cat will have a decreased
appetite. A cat with kidney disease will lose water through excessive urine volume, thus lacking fluids to moisten stool, which leads
to the constipation. Dryness can lead to anal gland impaction as
well, as loose stool lacks the oompf to push the normal anal gland
secretion out of the glands upon normal defecation.
The addition of a teaspoon of canned pumpkin to a dogs every
meal can really have a positive impact on proper anal gland function. The addition of a teaspoon of canned pumpkin to a cats
every meal can manipulate stool consistency to aid an elderly kitty
with daily defecation as well as prevent anal gland impaction for
this species as well.
Most dogs and cats love the taste of canned pumpkin. Start
with a tiny amount initially to help them adapt in case it is an
acquired taste for them. The fibrous nature of pumpkin makes
it a mover. I recommend to slather a tablespoon of pumpkin on
top of a thawed, raw duck neck as a great treat, meal replacement
and dental prophylactic for your large dog. The consumption of
this fibrous vegetation mixed with the chewed up bone will give
you peace of mind that the passage of the bone will be successful.
The chomping on raw bone can be a safe and effective means to
remove tartar from teeth. In this same way, pumpkin can be used
to move potential minor gastrointestinal (GI) obstructions.
Canned pumpkin and fish oil can be a part of a healthy, hairball management routine for cats. Typical commercial hairball
remedies are made from potentially toxic petrolatums and these
will coat the GI lining preventing the absorption of nutrients.
Conversely, fish oil is nutritive, can decrease shedding and lubricate the hair for proper passage. Less shedding means less hair
ingestion. The combination of fish oil and fibrous pumpkin moves
the hair on through the stomach and intestines so that it doesnt
ball up in the stomach. This means fewer hairballs on your carpet
and less for you to step on with bare feet in the morning!
Jodie Gruenstern, DVM, CVA, has been practicing veterinary
medicine in Muskego, Wisconsin since 1987. She is a certified
veterinary acupuncturist and food therapist by the Chi Institute.

Complex, an integrated, full-service small animal practice. For

Fight
disease with
polyphenols
Why are polyphenols
such an important part
of daily health?

By Nannette Jodar

lives contain vitamin E, polyphenols and additional

natural antioxidants, which serve as natural preservatives, delaying the onset of oxidation and rancidity in
olive oil. Polyphenols are powerful antioxidants from plant foods
that can be found in a variety of foods such as berries, olives, cocoa
(cacao is best), grapes, wine, green tea and more; and could be a
source of healthier and longer living. Olive oils health benefits
are 99 percent derived from the polyphenols in the olive and not
the oil itself, without which we would not have the health benefits
of the oil it creates that we love so much. There are more than
30 polyphenols in an olive, which absorb the free radicals in our
bodies. Any Mediterranean will attest to better health than what
is known in the United States for the simple extensive use of fresh
olive oil, which is very high in polyphenols.
Help protect your arteries with plant polyphenols, advised
Michael Helwig, R.D., director of Nutritional Services at Mark
Twain Medical Center in San Andreas, California. Polyphenols
are believed to eliminate the collection of fat in blood vessels,
reduce inflammation, act as an anti-fungal, raise HDL (good
cholesterol), as well as prevent blood clots. In time, the destructive
free radical molecules, which are a part of chronic diseases, could
be eliminated. Polyphenols could also provide benefits for plasma
lipid levels and oxidative damage.
They may contain anti-tumor and anti-carcinogenic properties
(per the American Institute for Cancer) by lowering inflammation
and cellular proliferation, improve health, and have anti-inflammatory and anti-aging potential. Clinical studies have proven that
polyphenols also act as an anti-inflammatory. Oxidation and cell
damage is reduced by polyphenols acting as antioxidants. They
also reduce microbial activity and infections.
Where do you start, you ask? Olive oil is the easiest answer. But
not all olive oil is created equal. Not by a long shot! The quality
10

Natures Pathways | October 2014

level of the olive is important to the level of polyphenols in the oil.

But it does not end there. There are a variety of factors that also
come into play while the olive is still an olive, which determines
the final count of milligrams of polyphenols in your oil. For us to
gain the health benefits that the Mediterraneans have, according
to the experts, we need to become as savvy as the Mediterraneans
about olives and the oils they create.
Scientists say that the Mediterraneans are the healthiest people
on Earth. They have less cardiovascular problems and therefore
less death attributed to these diseases, nearly no incidents of
stroke, Alzheimers disease, depression or hardening of the arteries, but lower blood pressure and lower cholesterol! And thats
just a short list!
A Mediterranean, on average, uses 8 tablespoons exclusively of
extra virgin olive oil each and every day. Thats 4 ounces of the
good, old-fashioned-style olive oil that they cook and bake with,
and drizzle on their fruit and vegetables. In addition, they apply
it to their skin, and as a result, these people have the best-looking
complexions and skin compared to any other group of people.
Homer called it liquid gold. In ancient Greece, athletes ritually rubbed
it all over their body. Its mystical glow illuminated history. Drops of it
seeped into the bones of dead saints and martyrs through holes in their
tombs. Olive oil has been more than mere food to the peoples of the
Mediterranean: it has been medicinal, magical, an endless source of
fascination and wonder and the fountain of great wealth and power.
The olive tree, symbol of abundance, glory, and peace, gave its leafy
branches to crown the victorious in friendly games and bloody war,
and the oil of its fruit has anointed the noblest of heads throughout
history. Olive trees have an almost titanic resistance, a vital force which
renders them nearly immortal. There are about twenty-two varieties of
olives growing in Tunisia today.

Instant
hamstring
relief!

By Hope Zvara

ts the grabbing pain in the back of your

leg, the extreme tightness that pulls
at your back when you bend over, the
restriction that keeps you from doing what
you love, be it running, walking, Zumba or
even yoga; maybe you find yourself sitting
the majority of the day and your backside
is calling for help. Hamstring tightness and
restriction is something I hear about from
students on a daily basis. Static postures
(holding a pose for an extended period of
time) when it comes to the hamstrings isnt

always the best approach, and postures that

require you to sit on your restriction dont
always come easy, especially for those of us
who are tight in the backside. As a functional
yoga teacher, I am continuously looking at
the body and our movements and asking if
there is a better way. The answer: yes!
Many are familiar with the posture
Standing Head to Knee or what some call
Pyramid Pose, but for many this pose just
brings up a whirlwind of restriction and
misalignment, not to mention fear at the
knee joint. But when you take the stress out
of this pose and move more dynamically in
the body, the hamstrings feel instant relief.

1. From a standing position, take a casual

(not a big) step back with your right foot.

Look to align both of your feet to face
forward (double check that the back foot
is not turned out) and parallel.
2. Ground actively through the front
foot: at the ball of the foot behind the
big toe, behind the pinky toe and also
at the inner heel of the foot.
3. Bringing your hands to your hips,
square your hips to face forward.
4. Keeping your front foot anchored, exhale
and bend the back knee (dont lift the
heel) and fold the torso half way forward.
5. As you hinge at the hips, be mindful to
keep the front foot anchored. Using your
hands at your hip folds, actively assist the
left hip (the hip of the front leg) to draw

back as you fold forward. Note that the

tighter your hips and hamstrings are,
the more crooked your hips will want to
pull. Focus on squaring them rather than
forcing your body into the fold; allow the
fold to follow the squaring.
6. Inhale as you rise, working to keep
balance.
7. Repeat this mindfully in repetition
(this does not mean quickly) 10 times
on each side. If you have discovered
that one side is tighter or has more
restriction, repeat that side an additional time for a 2-to-1 ratio approach.
This is a great runners aid and relief as
well as a yoga warmup for all those intense
hamstring and hip openers that seem so
impossible. But if you are an average Joe just
looking for relief from your computer chair,
take three minutes for a little backside rehab
and your body will be thanking you instantly.
Say hello to happy hamstrings!

In a

By Helen Borth

t seemed like an eye-opening idea to

wonder about the phrase to become as
a child. What is this about? Obviously
it concerns children and the focus, in this
moment, is with their eyes.
Without having any actual photographs
of infants or very young children around
the house, magazine pictures and pictures
from friends became an excellent source.
The most helpful pictures were ones where
the eyes showed an interesting depth not
often seen in adult eyes. Six choice pictures
were spread out on the kitchen table. When
taking a serious look at each picture, the 12
eyes seemed to have something in common.
The faces, smiles and amount of hair were
very different from one picture to another
but the eyes had a similar quality and depth.
What where the 12 eyes naturally
emanating? Whatever the eyes were
expressing, the participating adults were
filled with wonder. The wondering circled
around this idea: Could adults heighten
their own level of awareness by looking,
even at a picture, into the eyes of a baby?
Could the qualities captured in these 12
eyes affect an adults state of mind?
The time had come to create an experience.
By using the pictures as triggers or as pointers, could an adult realign his or her thinking to be more in harmony with a childlike
frequency? While looking deeply into those
baby eyes, a surprise emotion showed up. It
felt like falling into a well only this well
didnt splash with water because it was dry
www.naturespathways.com

and at the same time was filled with delicate,

delightful and delicious vibrational qualities. Remaining in that space for a moment
was like recognizing an infinite truth. Every
human being starts life with this inherited
gift of freedom and peacefulness.
Again it was time to fall into the delightful non-wet pool. This time, the sensation
was like floating and swimming in an ocean
of trust. All fear was nonexistent. There was
an endless energy of two vibrations, trust
and knowingness. The baby eyes were filled
with knowing its needs would be taken care
of. There was so much trust in the eyes,
expressing the absence of fear of falling no
matter how high the body was from the
ground. There was the feeling that trust
and a level of knowingness were the most
natural elements in the world.
Now the question arose. Can adults live
comfortably in the everyday world with
a childlike consciousness? Isnt that how
sages, masters, even highly spiritual individuals live? Is it possible for anyone to
change their way of doing ordinary life
into these realms of endless, unlimited,
natural and trusting qualities? Why not?
We inherited that awareness at birth. As
adults we simply cultivated a way to cover
up our spiritual inheritance.
In time and with practice, the pictures of
baby eyes were a possible tool to stretch and
lift personal awareness enough to recognize
our true inheritance. The baby eyes carried
no guilt, were void of self-consciousness

and lacked making judgments and having

endless attachments. No blame was placed
on others and ideas required no defense.
Participants who tried this freer way of
looking were innately ready to try living in
this world without suffering so many downfalls. Participants began to see their own
birthright vibration become more apparent
in their adult world. The goal now was to
allow the baby eyes, with that magnificent
sense of freedom and peace, permeate every
atom of their being. It seemed so logical and
simple. It became another way to live in the
world. In other words, they become more
childlike. All it took was spending some
time just sitting with a baby eyes picture;
absorbing its vibrations and consciously not
allowing the mind to bring up an endless
string of words and labels.
There is surely a piece of divinity in us,
something that was before the elements, and
owes no homage unto the sun.

10 sad truths about
the American
way
of death

By Jonas A. Zahn

he American way of death, when studied from perspectives that include carbon lifecycle analysis, biodegradability, local-sourcing, toxicity and sustainability, reveals
many sad truths. The death care industry causes significant and
unnecessary harm to our planet.
Here are 10 sad truths worth talking about:

2.5 million tons of CO2

The United States has the largest per capita carbon footprint on
the planet: more than three times the world average and more
than 10 times Indias carbon footprint.

100,000 tons of steel, brass and copper

Every year, we bury more than 90,000 tons of steel caskets, 14,000
tons of steel burial vaults and 2,700 tons of copper and brass caskets
in Americas cemeteries. We bury enough steel to build a 100-story
high-rise building every year. These metals will never be reclaimed

The carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the American way of

more than 2.5 million tons of CO2.

or recycled. These are expensive materials in terms of the carbon
footprint and also the toxic pollution required to extract, refine and
manufacture them.

1,400 degrees Fahrenheit

A typical cremation exposes human remains to a direct flame

reaching temperatures of 1,400 to 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit for a
duration of two to three hours, resulting in a carbon footprint of
350 to 600 pounds of CO2. Its high school chemistry and conservation of mass. Take the combined mass of human remains, cremation container and fuel used in cremation, less the mass of cremated
remains returned in the urn. Fossil fuel, a hydro-carbon, is composed
of hydrogen, carbon and oxygen. Our bodies are 65 percent oxygen,
18 percent carbon and 10 percent hydrogen by mass. Incineration
of our bodies with fossil fuels primarily produces CO2.

Third-largest contributor of airborne

mercury contamination

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that cremation is the nations third largest contributor of airborne mercury
contamination. The National Research Council estimates that more
than 60,000 children are born each year at risk for adverse neurodevelopmental effects due to in-utero exposure to mercury.

2,500 pounds of CO2 from wicker caskets

Many funeral homes offer natural burial caskets made of wicker,

seagrass, banana leaves or bamboo. While these 60- to 75-pound
caskets are biodegradable, distributing them to your funeral home
via air freight from our nations ports generates a carbon footprint
of 1,000 pounds of CO2. Add that to the carbon produced to grow
and manufacture the natural burial casket, and you have a larger
carbon footprint than a steel casket at 1,500 to 2,000 pounds of
CO2! Biodegradable is not the same as sustainable.

1,636,000 tons of reinforced concrete vaults

Every year, Americas cemeteries bury enough steel-reinforced

concrete to build a highway from New York to San Francisco. Prior
to 1900, concrete vaults were unheard of. While concrete vaults do
provide some function in cemetery service, vaults are not required
by law in Wisconsin. In terms of carbon, concrete production is the
worlds most expensive building material and is responsible for 5
percent of the global carbon footprint.

Full Moon chart, October 8 5:51am

Though true for everyone, the following information will feel more
relevant to you if your sun, North Node, Chiron and/or a group of
other planets are in Libra on your birth chart.

What is Libras
intention?

Having spent the first half of the

zodiac journey developing the
ego self, our inner Venus now
attracts opportunities to apply
our self-knowledge to creating
relationship. Come hither, Libra!
It is the Libra in us all that
knows that the path to wholeness, in this world, must include

relationships with others. The dance between two egos invites

divine connection. Libras spiritual intention is to begin the softening of the boundaries that our ego has formed within the illusion of separateness that this physical world presents as reality.
When we are ready for this, relationships and commitment are
inviting and exciting. If our ego
is holding tight to the illusion,
we fear relationships as a threat
to self-preservation, though the
longing to engage still moves
within us.
Through Libra, we are all
learning to share, to see things
through anothers eyes, to become
aware of and support their needs
and communicate our own with
diplomacy and tact. When doing this well, we remain strongly
grounded in our self, while also willing to cooperate and create
win/win situations. When unconscious, we fear losing our self and
become aggressive or defensive, pushing others away, or we fear
aloneness and lose touch with ourself, over-identify with another,
compromise or capitulate altogether. This can lead to a debilitating co-dependence or trying to always be nice with an obsessive
attachment to fairness and justice and a fear of conflict.
www.naturespathways.com

What needs healing and growth?

The wounded Libra in each of us feels alone or separate. We long

for an other to complete us and bring balance to our lives. This
can be experienced as a fear of being alone, acted out as described
above. We may seek harmony around us in any way possible, and
put on masks of peace and contentment while feeling imbalance
and conflict within.
To heal our Libra selves, we need to embrace that what we seek
in others is already in ourself. Their beauty is ours. Their lovingness is ours. Their darkness is ours. In this way, we reclaim pieces
of ourself that need acceptance, appreciation and love, and add to
our sense of wholeness, completion and balance. Likewise, as we
see ourselves in others, we see through the illusion of separateness.
We see their soul reflecting our soul. Each time that happens, we
come to know who we really are as spiritual beings, already whole
and complete and always connected. In that self-knowing, there is
no aloneness to fear.

What can I do this month?

To heal and evolve your Libra self, give attention to how you are in
relationships. Can you assert your boundaries even when it feels as
though the other may reject you? Is your assertiveness and defensiveness impulsive or a conscious response to the other person?
Are you truly curious about whats going on in the other person?
Do you look for win-win solutions? Are you open to learning
about your self in situations of conflict? When you judge or praise

others, can you see yourself, too? Are you a pleaser, keeping a
smile that covers your truth? Do your relationships support how
you want to be in life?

Additional support (current planetary

transits)

This year, Venus (relationship) is tracking closely to the sun, so it is

home in Libra (relationships) this month, while Mercury (mind)
enters Scorpio (intimacy), then retrogrades back into Libra. The
combined effect is to heighten your longing for committed connection to others while alerting your mind to the deeper, shadowy
parts of relationship that challenge your ego, but lead to transformation. (See questions above.)
Pluto (power), in Capricorn (responsibility), is currently
squared with Uranus (individualism) in Aries (self-assertion).
While also temporarily squared with the Sun and Venus in Libra,
the invitation this month is to notice how the way you experience your personal relationships reflects on how you relate to the
powers around and over you.

Avoid Halloween
makeup allergies
and other
reactions

hat are the horrors of Halloween?

Many might say encountering a
gruesome ghoul or a blood-sucking
vampire is the most horrific part of Halloween.
However, an allergic reaction can be just as scary
as ghosts and goblins come Halloween.
The candy a child eats, the makeup kids use as part of their
costumes or even the costume itself can cause an allergic reaction. Parents and kids need to be careful and exercise their due
diligence to avoid possible allergens.

breathe. Accessories used for many common Halloween costumes

also may cause reactions. Crowns, magic wands and faux jewelry
that use metals like nickel may cause rashes and irritation. Beware
of nickel and cobalt, which can trigger allergic reactions.

Makeup

Decorations

According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma and

Immunology, Halloween makeup can trigger an allergic reaction or symptoms of asthma. Inexpensive makeup may contain
preservatives that can cause a rash and swelling of the skin. Formaldehyde is a very common preservative used in many of these
products, but some products labeled formaldehyde-free can still
cause allergic reactions. Certain makeup is not advisable to use
around the mouth or eyes, so be certain to check all packaging
for any warnings. High-quality theater makeup may be a better
option than the cheap crayon sticks sold at costume stores.
In any event, always test makeup on a small area of the skin well
in advance of Halloween. If a rash or any abnormality occurs, do
not use the makeup.

Costumes

Costumes can induce an allergic reaction as well. If costumes are

older and packed away in a basement or attic, trapped dust and
dust mites can make it difficult for those with allergies or asthma to
18

Natures Pathways | October 2014

Those who want to create a spooky environment at their Halloween parties should be advised that fog machines can trigger
asthma attacks in some people. Its best to check with party
attendees before firing up the fog machine.

Edible treats

Food allergies abound in children and adults. Many commercially

produced candy and chocolate bars are manufactured in factories
that also process peanuts and other tree nuts, so exercise caution
with treats. Baked goods may contain wheat, gluten, eggs, soy and
any number of other food allergens. Its wise to have a variety of
inedible treats available for trick-or-treaters or partygoers, including stickers, pencils and small toys.
Halloween should be an enjoyable day for the young and the
young at heart. This beloved holiday can be made safer by avoiding common allergy triggers.

How starches
affect blood
sugar and
weight

By Rosalie Misco

ll starches are carbohydrates. Starch does not occur alone,

it is combined with nutrients. Starch itself has no nutrients but is a carrier for various nutrients.
Foods high in starch include potatoes, rice and grains ground
into flour. When grains are ground and the bran and germ is
removed, what is left is white flour, which is almost pure starch.
Other foods contain starch in smaller amounts.
Starch is equal to sugar in the way it affects blood sugar and
weight. The body cannot tell the difference between starch and
sugar, as both raise blood sugar, create increased hunger and
cause weight gain. Starch, along with sugar, raises fat triglycerides
and can cause weight gain.
Resistant starch fiber is a carbohydrate, a starch and a fiber all
in one. It is naturally occurring in foods like cold potatoes (when
they are heated up again they convert to regular starch). Slightly
green bananas contain resistant starch fiber, but when they are
ripe the resistant starch turns into regular starch as well.
Resistant starch fiber does not raise blood sugar very much and
when combined with foods high in regular starch, they help keep
the regular starch from raising blood sugar so high and fast. Other
starches make a body hungry, resistant starch fiber makes a body
feel full and takes away the desire to overeat.
A resistant starch made from a special variety of non-genetically modified corn is available in a bag. It is called Hi-maize
260. It can be added to many different foods to lower the carb
count of those foods and reduce the blood sugar and weight gain
www.naturespathways.com

of normally high starch foods. This corn starch does not thicken
foods like the regular corn starch. It is heat stable so it can be
used in cooking and baking. It can be used in yogurt, smoothies, sour cream and many other foods without being detected.
Natural Expressions 100% Whole Grain Bakery carries this product
with instructions for its use for blood sugar and weight control. Rosalie

5 elements of
transformative thinking
and movement you
need
to know

By Jill E. Greinke, MSW, LCSW, SAC

Said its time for change; We need to change; When the seasons
change; I aint afraid to change; Oh we need a change; We all can
change.
Seasons Change, written by Brian and Brandon

Casey, performed by Jagged Edge featuring John Legend

ere we are in the last quarter of the year on the Gregorian calendar. In Wisconsin, it is autumn; we know that
a long winter is approaching. Our children are busy
learning new lessons in school and the holidays are sneaking up
right behind us.

In climate zones that demonstrate four seasons, autumn is often

cited as many peoples favorite. In a few weeks, most cities within
the United States will fall back by an hour. Many other countries
throughout the world practice Daylight Saving Time as well.
Id like to point out that our clocks arent the only things that
will change.
You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on
the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you
have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.

Jane Goodall
I believe that if people were asked the question: What do you
think you could do to change the world?, many would answer,
Well, I cant really; I am only one person. Yet, most of us would
agree that making conscious changes in our personal lives are one
of the greatest freedoms in life. Russian writer, philosopher and
political thinker Leo Tolstoy said, Everyone thinks of changing
the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.
Many people now agree that our world has become global
and interconnected in many ways (economically, socially, environmentally, etc.). We are no longer independent islands floating in a sea of isolation. Many spiritual, metaphysical and scientific experts affirm that we are all connected. In their book, The
Systems View of Life, A Unifying Vision, Fritjof Capra and Pier L.

20

Natures Pathways | October 2014

www.naturespathways.com

Luisi claim the many problems we face within our world (energy,
climate change, and water scarcity and financial security, etc.) take
on a systemic relationship because they are all interconnected and
interdependent. As a result, it will take systemic solutions to solve
these global problems.
You cant connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect
them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will
somehow connect to your future. You have to trust in something
your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let
me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.

Steve Jobs
When I work with clients, I always teach the theory of connecting the dots, meaning that patterns of thought and behaviors
(thought patterns, feelings, actions or nonactions) are connected
back throughout a persons life in a cause-and-effect fashion. The
patterns of our thoughts and behaviors are signposts and clues
that offer us direction and forward movement. But we have to
develop ways to read and decipher what they mean to us. When
we allow ourselves to be open to new ways of thinking, feeling
and doing things, we create the possibility to change our realities.
As a result, the people in our lives will also be affected by those
possibilities. We make changes to society at large in this way: first
within ourselves and then throughout the world.
So what exactly constitutes transformative thinking and
movement?
1. Get in touch with your fears (the very thing most of us avoid).
Know that the fear may be an involuntary feeling meant to
protect us. Unfortunately, it also has the power to hold us back
from transforming.
2. Know that our thoughts create our version of reality. They can
be conscious or subconscious. When they are not in our best
interest, they tend to become habitual and can create actions
that prevent us from moving forward.
3. Find ways to be still and listen. We should seek to develop
habits that help us to connect to our inner wisdom so that
we can consciously create what we want versus haphazardly
creating from a place that is not productive for us. We can do
this through meditation, taking a warm bath, relaxing, awareness exercises, becoming incredibly engrossed in an activity,
etc. Everyone has a different ways of contacting their inner
voice.
4. Trust that once you get into that inner place, ideas about
transformational thinking and movement will automatically
pop into your head.
5. Develop the courage to implement the ideas that were
presented to you in that quiet place and then do so. Reflect on
how your inner visions have the ability of unifying all aspects
of your life and how they are a microcosm of the whole world
even the whole universe.

Avoiding
the $6,100
death spiral
Biomimetic dentistry

By Carol Vander Stoep, RDH, BSDH, OMT

irst, know there is nothing natural about dentistry. Dentistry

is one of the most invasive, material and surgically oriented
disciplines in health care. You probably already know traditional dentistry is largely rescue, amputation and replacement
dentistry. It treats localized symptoms of what are really bodywide
health problems.
But revolutionary solutions exist. Biological dentists can test
to see which materials are most biocompatible for you, discern
if root-canal-treated teeth or jawbone cavitations challenge your
general health, and can help you determine if oral conditions
contribute to autoimmune problems.
But there is another angle. Failing and dead, embalmed teeth
may contribute more to poor health than the more commonly
recognized links between bleeding gums and a cascade of inflammatory diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and osteoporosis.
How do teeth fail? Beyond future health problems, standard

drill and fill dentistry puts a tooth squarely on a death spiral

that on average costs its owner $6,100 (in 2013 dollars) over a
lifetime, exclusive of advanced dentistry such as crowns on the
way to tooth failure.
Advanced imaging makes early, repeatable diagnosis a reality,
offering 90 percent diagnostic success a far cry from traditional
poke and hope diagnostic methods using only X-rays and a pick.
Early diagnosis means almost zero tooth amputation. Zero
tooth amputation means a tooth can continue to flex and bend
naturally as it should without breaking. Air abrasion gently and
selectively clears damaged tooth structure without an anesthetic.
Subsequently placing a nontraditional super sealant often
protects a tooth for a lifetime both the chewing surface on
which it was placed as well as surfaces in between teeth.
For those who want to rebuild teeth without crowns or to safely
replace traditional fillings, biomimetic dentistry helps a tooth
survive. These techniques preserve maximum tooth structure
so it can withstand chewing and clenching stresses. A myriad of
sophisticated techniques not yet taught by most dental schools
quadruple the bond strength of the filling to the tooth and allow
it to flex almost like the original tooth, helping prevent microleakage and thus future decay.
Isnt your smile, health and pocketbook worth it?
Carol Vander Stoep, RDH, BSDH, OMT wrote this article for Dr. Bryan
Schwartz because she advocates the changes in dentistry Dr. Schwartz exemplifies. A hygienist and occasional writer for Dr. Mercola, she is the author of
the book on oral/systemic connections, Mouth Matters: How Your Mouth Ages

Headaches:
Common but
not
normal

By Patrick McCann, D.C.

eadaches, though common in todays society, are not

normal. Headaches are a sign that your body is being
affected by different types of stress and the end result is
pain. According to the American Council on Headache Education, there are over 45 million people who suffer from headaches.
Headaches are also one of the most common reasons people seek
medical and chiropractic care.
Medical management of headaches consists of taking medications to relieve the symptoms of the headaches. Instead of covering up the symptoms, you should look to find the underlying
cause of why you are getting headaches in the first place. Some
of the most common causes are previous traumas, sports injuries,
environmental toxins, diet and stress.
When you experience headaches or any other pain within the
body, this is your bodys way of letting you know that something
is not right. Your body is trying to call your attention to something so instead of covering up the problem with a medication,
chiropractic looks for that underlying cause.
Chiropractic focuses specifically on the alignment of the spine,
as this can affect our nervous system and ultimately how our body
is working.
The nervous system is comprised of the brain and spinal cord and
is the master system of the body as it controls the function of every
cell, tissue and organ. When you have misalignments (subluxations)
of the spine affecting the nervous system, this can cause headaches.
Chiropractors are the only doctors who are trained in finding and
correcting subluxations. Once the subluxation is removed, the
spine and nervous system heal and function better, helping people
with headaches naturally without the use of medications.
Lets examine the case study of a 10-year-old girl with chronic,
severe migraines (six times a week for the previous three years),
who was unable to go to school due to the severity of her headaches.
www.naturespathways.com

After just her third chiropractic adjustment she was off her pain
medications, and by the third week she was back in school. She was
leading a normal and healthy life by the end of the fifth visit.
Another case study involves a 13-year-old boy who was hurt in a
football game. He was in terrible pain and had to wear dark glasses
and ear plugs because of his increased sensitivity to light and sound.
His medical doctor gave him painkillers and hospitalized him for

Transformation
How do we really heal from
emotional struggles?

Establishing balance and the emergence of of self.

We exist in these states. As they come into balance
we see the emergence of self (small s).

here is a great interest in maximizing our health in our culture:

physically, emotionally and spiritually. However, when we struggle with
our health, we often wonder, What does
health really mean? First we must distinguish between healing and feeling a bit
better. We have been taught that feeling
a bit better may be the best we can expect
if we involve ourselves in the traditional
approaches offered by our established
culture. But we can do better! We can actually heal from our distress; like a cut on
our skin that gradually heals and leaves no
trace, our humanness is designed to experience healing in every area of our lives.
We begin with the understanding that
healing is a process. Placing our emotional
injuries into a process is important because

with a process, we begin a journey and the

pathway is now clear and under control.
Process gives a direction to emotional
wandering. Often a spiritual guide is
necessary to take this important step. But
what is the goal of the process? Where do
we want it to lead?
Consider for a moment that our first
great achievement is balance between
body, mind and soul (or spirit):
As these come into balance, we have the
emergence of a sense of self (see diagram small s). This is the state of feeling better
and even integrating our lives somewhat
and knowing who we are. In our culture
this is an achievement we seek, but often
we approach this balance and are still left
wondering about the fulfillment in our
lives, and perhaps the emotional pain

continues. For the courageous people who

know their journey has not yet reached the
destination, more work needs to be done:
the work of transformation.
Each of the areas of our lives can be
transformed into a higher level and there
are specific transformative activities now
available in our culture for each. For those
seeking the highest level of human life
or for those who are suffering emotional
distress this is the pathway toward real
healing. Here are the advanced states we
can achieve:
Each of these states is accessible to us

great gifts of their founders and followers

over eons of time. Cultural gifts from the
East and Mideast are now found everywhere. However, finding the right path
through all the offerings can at times be
difficult and a guide or counselor is often
necessary.
Notice that when these advanced states
begin to form some balance there is the
emergence of the Self. This is a term used
by Carl G. Jung, a psychiatrist from the
late 19th and 20th century, who is credited
with launching the movement in which
people began seeking to look much deeper
into their psyches to discover the meaning
in their lives. Jung said that the term
meant that someone was living a unique
life, a life that had to be. He ascribed the
term to anyone who was truly achieving
the right pathway toward transformation
or what he (and others) have called The
Symbolic Life. Self, in its ultimate form,
was seen in the lives of Jesus Christ or
Siddhartha, called the Buddha, and other
great spiritual leaders and wisdom teachers. However there are many of us who are
pursuing Self and are now living as healing
souls, the life of the Self.
But how do you begin this journey and
how do you stay on the healing path?
However you begin you will need to
understand these advanced states more
and more as they appear. There are experts,
others who have walked these paths before
you and know the way. Use them!
I will dedicate my upcoming monthly

A delicious

commitment to health
Oliviva Inc. makes olive
oil an easy choice

By Grace Olson

t has been around for thousands of years, has innumerable

health benefits, and after butter and margarines heydays,
is finally getting the attention it deserves. Welcome to the
spotlight, olive oil!
But not just any olive oil deserves the limelight. All varieties are not created equal, and its easy to see that Oliviva
Inc. separates itself from the others by not only believing in
the best, but by thinking about every aspect of producing an
award-winning product starting with their business name.
It came as a result of wanting to have a name that represented
a healthy quality of life, thats what viva stands for, Nannette
Jodar explains. And then of course theres olives and using olivebased products. Thats how we came up with Oliviva.
A perfect name paired with an interest in international
commerce and the trading market; Nannette learned about
how products are transported from one country to another
and chose to become involved in something she knew would
help people on multiple levels.

A well-rounded superfood

Olive oil benefits anything having to do with the cardiovascular

system, Nannette explains. It has anti-inflammatory properties, normalizes blood clotting, prevents the hardening of arteries and helps with insulin and blood sugar control for diabetes.
It does that and so much more. The Food and Drug
Administration states that simply consuming 2 tablespoons
of olive oil a day reduces of the risk of heart attacks, lowers
blood pressure, brings your good cholesterol up and may
even prevent stroke. Olive oil is a monounsaturated fatty acid,
which is the right kind of fat, beneficial to cardiovascular
health and more.
Emerging research shows that even depression risk can
be lowered by olive oil, perhaps attributing to the fact that
countries where a Mediterranean diet prevails report lower
cases of the condition. And thats not all they can be proud
of. Experts report Mediterraneans use approximately 8 tablespoons every day, and its paying off.

Olive oil is whats causing Mediterraneans to live longer, look

better and have healthier looking clear skin, Nannette says. They
have very little knowledge of heart attacks and cardiovascular
issues, memory loss, cholesterol, high blood pressure, Alzheimers
disease. Theyre doing something right!
The health benefits gained by using olive oil are undeniable, but
its important to know what to look for to truly reap them.

The Oliviva Inc. difference

Organic extra virgin olive oil has an exceptionally high level of polyphenols the antioxidants to look for to gain the most nutritious
value from the olives. If youre hoping to take advantage of all olive
oils health properties, Nannette warns against utilizing oils with the
words refined and light advertised.
Heavily refined or light olive oils mean chemicals and heat were
used to refine it, she says. They tend to have less than 2.7 milligram/kilogram of polyphenols. Youre spending a lot of money on
refined oil and there are no consumable health benefits to it.
Oliviva Inc.s olive oil boasts 442 mg/kg of polyphenols. In
comparison, the average level of other extra virgin olive oils sold in
the United States is 187 or less.
Throughout the manufacturing process, Olivivas high standards ensure their olive oil hasnt lost its made-at-home flavor, in
part due to one of the first steps: picking the olives. The Oliviva
orchard is nestled in Tunisia, a small country in Africa known for its
lasting olive orchards. The particular orchard Oliviva uses has been
growing trees and making olive oil since the 1600s. Not much has
changed in their practices.
Olivivas orchards handpick their olives, Nannette explains.
They do not use olive machines to pick the olives because the
minute you start bruising an olive, you reduce the polyphenols in
it you compromise the flavor and the quality of the olive oil. Its
so flavorful, silky and smooth naturally.
Nannette suggests trying Olivivas award-winning Donia Fruity
if youre starting out in the olive oil world but want the impact of
the health factor right away. It is known for its fruity flavor and is
exceptionally noteworthy as it is produced with only chetoui olives,
considered to be one of the original olives. Very similar but known
for its milder taste is the Donia Mild.
Weve been at a lot of farmers markets lately and its amazing the
stories people share with us about how our olive oil really works.
They always get excited and say Ive been doing 2 tablespoons of
olive oil a day! Then they always walk away with a bigger bottle
than they bought before, Nannette laughs.

While you can certainly drink Olivivas pure-tasting

olive oil alone, Nannette has come up with a
concoction that makes getting the daily recommended
2 tablespoons even simpler.
Mix 2 tablespoons olive oil with 2 tablespoons
juice from a fresh lemon, add 1
tablespoon raw, unprocessed honey
and a cup of warm water.
Simply shake and drink for
a quick, tasty health boost!
In an even bigger
hurry? Mix the olive oil
with your favorite fruit
juice. (Grapefruit is
Nannettes favorite!)

particular foods getting into the wood because its that hard.
A handmade soap, tentatively called Ambrosia of the
Gods is also in the works. Unlike products with coconut
oil, anything made with olive oil is incredibly moisturizing, and not surprising, the soap will be made predominantly from Olivivas polyphenol-filled olive oil.
The company will also be experimenting with taste. Flavored
extra virgin olive oil chili pepper, garlic basil, rosemary, lemon
and orange along with entirely new oils are on the horizon.
Coconut, avocado, argon oil and balsamic vinegar from Medina,
Italy are the first few being considered.
I joke that Olivivas olive oil enhances the flavor of your food and
the side effect is better health, or it will help improve your health
and the side effect is enhancing your food, Nannette laughs.
Any way you look at it, its a win-win for all of us.

A tasty, new future in olive oil

We want to do so much with it! Nannette says of Olivivas everexpanding market. We want Oliviva to represent itself throughout
the whole country, and maybe even Canada and Mexico someday.
Currently, the company sells to distributors in Wisconsin,
Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico and Texas. Their future
growth doesnt just pertain to edible items from overseas, but other
innovative products that their orchards create, starting with one of
the most often overlooked: olive wood.
Its very hard and nonporous, Nannette explains. It works really
well for cutting boards, for instance. You can cut chicken, meats and
vegetables on it and not have to worry about the flavors from those

Lavender
Lavandula angustifolia

avender is native to the Mediterranean region.

It was used in ancient Egypt as part of the
process for mummifying bodies. Lavenders use as a bath
additive originated in Persia, Greece and Rome. The herbs name
comes from the Latin lavare, which means to wash.
Historically, lavender was used as an antiseptic and for mental
health purposes. Today, lavender is used as a folk or traditional
remedy for anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, depression, headache,
upset stomach and hair loss.
Lavender is most commonly used in aromatherapy, in which the
scent of the essential oil from the flowers is inhaled. The essential oil
can also be diluted with another oil and applied to the skin. Dried
lavender flowers can be used to make teas or liquid extracts that can
be taken by mouth.

What the science says

There is little scientific evidence of lavenders effectiveness for most

health uses. Small studies on lavender for anxiety show mixed results.

Some preliminary results indicate that lavender oil, combined

with oils from other herbs, may help with hair loss from a condition called alopecia areata.

Side effects and cautions

Topical use of diluted lavender oil or use of lavender as aromatherapy is generally considered safe for most adults. However, applying
lavender oil to the skin can cause irritation. There have been reports
that topical use can cause breast growth in young boys.
Lavender oil may be poisonous if taken by mouth.
When lavender teas and extracts are taken by mouth, they may
cause headache, changes in appetite, and constipation.
Using lavender with sedative medications may increase
drowsiness.

Core
strengthening
for your horse
Part 3

By: Amber Erickson, DC, MEBW

e have been discussing core strengthening for your

equine partner, and in this months article we will
continue learning new stretches and exercises. For a
quick review, core strengthening can improve almost any horses
performance, as well as lessen the chance of an injury happening.
Continue to have a safe place to work with your horse, and keep
wearing protective footwear and gloves.
By now, you and your horse should be getting pretty good at
doing the five or six stretches weve already discussed, and you may
already be noticing some differences in his topline muscling. This
month we will be focusing on true core strengthening. Up until
this point, we have done stretching and range-of-motion exercises created to strengthen and to stretch the horses upper back
and abdominal muscles. As with all core strengthening exercises,
these are best done when the horse is warm (a five- or 10-minute
walking session is usually sufficient to warm him up). Do these
exercises three to six times every day, four or five times per week.
The newest stretch is called a wither lift. The handler should
stand by the horses front leg, facing toward the horse. Using both
hands, as spread apart as you can make your fingers, apply gentle
but firm upward pressure onto the horses sternum (or chest).
Your hands should be just in front of the location of the girth,
near the pectoral muscles. The horse will respond by lifting his
withers toward the ceiling.
Continue working back on his belly into a belly lift, and transition this into a back lift. The horse should smoothly raise his entire
back, from his withers through his low back, in response to your
gentle pressure. This can be followed by asking the horse to bend
his abdomen toward you by reaching all of the way underneath and
tickling his opposite side. Please proceed with caution here, though!
It is possible to increase this stretch by asking a handler to lower
www.naturespathways.com

the horses head a small amount while hes stretching. If your horse
is less than sensitive, and he does not respond to your hands (or if
your hands lack the strength to hold his move), you can use a pen
cap to gently ask your horse to lift his back.
It is common for many horses to resist doing a belly lift when this
exercise is first introduced. He should become accustomed to it as he
gets stronger with daily exercises. However, if his resistance continues
past the first week, or becomes more aggressive, please desist doing
those exercises. Consult with your veterinarian or equine chiropractor before reintroducing them. This holds true for all of the exercises
we have discussed. If the horse displays a marked change in range of
motion or in acceptance of a stretch day by day, he may need to be
checked out by an equine bodyworker or chiropractor.
These six or seven exercises can help you to reshape your horses
back in a very positive way. Once you have performed these daily
for several weeks with no problems, the horse is ready to move on.
Now is the time to introduce cavalleti (trotting over ground poles)
and more advanced under-saddle work to continue building and
stretching his topline and abdominal muscling.
This is also the time to introduce more hill work. Hills are a
fantastic way to improve core strength, but they must always be
done correctly. This means not letting the horse charge up or
down the hills! The horse should begin by walking up all hills,
and sometimes it is advantageous to get off and hand walk him
up a hill while he learns how to efficiently use his hind end. Also
always walk down hill; at least until you are very sure that your
horse is fit enough for it.

Nrf2:
The master
regulator

By Tracy Bretl, D.O.

rf2 is short for NF-E2-related 2.

It is a powerful protein that is
present in each cell in the body
but must be released by an Nrf2 activator.
Once released, it moves to the nucleus of
the cell and bonds to the DNA at the location that is the master regulator of the
total antioxidant system available in all

human cells. The activated Nrf2 upregulate survival genes genes that enable the
cells to survive the stress from free radicals
and other oxidants or inflammatory stress
and downregulate other genes to help
the body function at an optimal level.
According to Dr. David Perlmutter,
High levels of free radicals turn on a

specific protein in the cells nucleus called

Nrf2. Activation of Nrf2 essentially opens
the door for the production of a vast array
of our bodys most important antioxidants.
It is clear that excessive free radicals induce
better antioxidant production through this
pathway, but the obvious question is, what
else activates Nrf2?

It turns out that a variety of foods are

powerful activators of the Nrf2 pathway.
While not necessarily rich in antioxidants,
they directly and dramatically amplify our
innate ability to produce vast antioxidant
protection by signaling our DNA. In this
way, specific molecules from Nrf2-activating foods can trigger the production of
thousands of antioxidant molecules, providing far better protection against the braindamaging effects of free radicals compared
to standard antioxidant supplements.
Thus, one of the responses of Nrf2 activation is to reduce free radical damage
or oxidative stress with the production
of antioxidant enzymes. Other responses
include help in cleaning up damage with
housekeeping proteins and preparing cells
for future exposure to stressors with heat
shock proteins.
Nrf2 was identified about 20 years ago
and scientists have since found that Nrf2
is not only involved in the production of
antioxidant enzymes, including superoxide dismutase, glutathione and catalase, but
also important anti-inflammatory proteins
and detoxification genes. These protective

pathways are involved in many areas of

health, ranging from immune function to
tissue repair to cognitive function. These
areas share the Nrf2 regulation, which
allows cells to protect themselves from both
internal and external challenges. Thus, Nrf2
activation allows our cells to help themselves minimize damage. Nrf2 induction
has been shown to affect gene expression
in hundreds of genes linked to superior
health of the heart, colon and brain. These
scientific findings suggest our cells have
the genetic capability needed to maintain
oxidative balance, promote health, and slow
the aging process, as long as the cells are
able to properly activate the Nrf2 pathway.
There are many natural Nrf2 activators.
Exercise will activate the Nrf2 pathway.
Intermittent fasting will also cause activation of Nrf2 and survival genes. Many
foods cause Nrf2 activation, such as blueberries, tea, coffee, broccoli, cabbage,
wasabi, Brussels sprouts and onions. A
number of spices and herbs activate Nrf2,
including milk thistle, bacopa, ashwaganda, green tea, turmeric, black pepper
and pine bark.

Many scientists believe that activation

of Nrf2 pathways is the future of cellular
protection and health promotion. Shawn
Talbott, Ph.D. (Nutritional Biochemistry),
for the past several years, has been focusing his research and writing on the concept
of psychological vigor, defined as a threetiered mood state characterized by physical energy, mental acuity and emotional
well-being. His writing indicates he feels
that the management of oxidative stress by
natural Nrf2 activation is vitally important
in improving vigor and helping us reach
our peak potential.

Protect
yourself with
glutathione
Now is the time to start
supplementing!

By Terry Lemerond

lutathione is the master antioxidant that affects everything in your health whether its how your body reacts
to a meal of junk food or whether or not you wind up
with Parkinsons disease or cancer.
Although our bodies naturally synthesize glutathione from
glycine, cysteine and glutamic acid, levels tend to drop off with
age sometimes dramatically exactly when we need it the
most. Of course, exposure to toxins, liver damage, illness and
genetics can disrupt and impact glutathione production as well.
But without glutathione, you cant make enough white blood cells
to fight off invaders, so it is absolutely essential.
Glutathione also neutralizes harmful toxins, stops free radical
damage to your DNA and helps preserve the caps on the end of
your chromosomes called telomeres. Telomeres help keep that
important strand of DNA from unraveling, much in the way the
hard end keeps shoelaces from fraying. And there is a definite link
between telomere length and longevity.

that intravenously administered glutathione dramatically reduced

nerve damage in patients being treated with certain kinds of
chemotherapy that cause neurotoxicity. Not only did glutathione
exert a neuroprotective effect, it reduced the nerve-damaging
oxidative stress caused by chemotherapy.
Glutathione has become a standard practice in the complementary treatment of tick-borne Lyme disease caused by the Borrelia
burgdorferi bacteria. Glutathione is crucial to reduce the damage
of the disease, since the bodys own levels are often depleted with
the effort of fighting off the bacteria. In fact, Polish researchers
found that patients using antibiotics to treat the skin lesion phase
of the disease still had heavy free radical activity.
Research with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients in Italy showed
a strong correlation between inflammation, oxidative stress and
lowered glutathione levels in the bloodstream. In fact, a clinical
study in Jordan found that patients with RA showed a 50 percent
depletion of reduced glutathione compared to healthy controls.

Glutathione and disease

Boost your glutathione levels easily

Glutathione protects disease-fighting lymphocytes from oxidative damage, allowing them to destroy undesirable cells, including cancer cells. Additionally, studies suggest that boosting glutathione levels can enhance your immune systems ability to tackle
infectious invaders and provide other astounding benefits.
As early as 1996, an Italian study found that after only 30 days
of treatment with reduced glutathione, the progression of Parkinsons disease was reduced and the symptoms were improved by 42
percent. The challenge was that glutathione could only be given
intravenously, which put a great limit on its daily therapeutic use
at the time.
Glutathione may also help those actively being treated for
certain types of cancer. In a 2008 study, Japanese doctors found
32

Natures Pathways | October 2014

So why hasnt everyone rushed out and started taking glutathione? Because theres a catch. Often, integrative practitioners use
intravenous (IV) glutathione, sometimes at the cost of thousands
of dollars. And, many oral supplemental forms of glutathione
become oxidized in the body by the digestive process. Even enteric
coating doesnt help, because the problem isnt acid exposure
any exposure in the stomach and intestines is the problem. And
oxidized glutathione not only becomes useless to fighting disease,
but actually adds to the free radical burden youre trying to avoid.
Rather than oxidized glutathione, what you really want is active
glutathione, otherwise known as reduced glutathione.
Fortunately, French research scientists have developed a way to
enhance glutathiones bioavailability in a supplemental form. This
www.naturespathways.com

patented process combines glutathione with protective antioxidants

to create a slow-melt tablet that dissolves under the tongue. Since
the tissues beneath your tongue are rich in capillaries that transport
the glutathione directly into your blood stream as the tablet melts,
this unique sublingual supplement bypasses the digestive tract.
In fact, in only 11 days, it increased active glutathione in the
bloodstream by 38 points, while unprotected glutathione actually
reduced the active amount by 40 points a 78-point difference
between the two groups. It also improved glutathione ratios (the
ratio of active glutathione to the oxidized form) by 230 percent
compared to unprotected glutathione.

There is no other compound quite like glutathione. When you

need a viable option to boost your levels, this latest French development may be the revolutionary answer you need to live a longer

Faith-based
investing

By Lars M. Lewander

ver the centuries, what we now know as socially responsible investing has emerged from faith-based or valuesbased investing. Followers of Christian, Jewish and
Islamic faiths, as well as many indigenous cultures, have carefully
considered the impact of their financial decisions on future generations, the environment and other human beings.
Today, numerous organizations, such as the Interfaith Center on
Corporate Responsibility, serve as watchdogs and use shareholder
activism to promote activities by corporations that support social
responsibility, human rights, environmental justice and other causes.
Every major denomination follows investment principles, so that
investors can put their money where their faith is. Dozens of mutual
funds have emerged that follow the guidelines set by their faith, and
typically screen out stocks of companies that violate the tenets of a
given religion or religious denomination. For example, a Muslim
fund is likely to screen out companies related to pork production, for
example, while a Catholic fund can avoid a maker of contraceptives.
Below is an overview of the primary faith-based investment
principles:

Catholic

Investors with Catholic values often seek to avoid investing in

firms that pay domestic partner benefits to unmarried or samesex couples or support abortion, contraceptives, embryonic stem
cell research, and weapons of mass destruction. They often favor
firms that support human rights, environmental responsibility
and fair employment practices via the support of labor union
organizations. Many Catholic-based mutual funds comply with
the Socially Responsible Investment Guidelines set by the U.S.
Conference of Catholic Bishops. The funds also screen out companies involved with pornography and other adult entertainment.
34

Natures Pathways | October 2014

Islamic

Islamic law forbids Muslims from investing in companies that charge

interest on loans or that are in debt over a certain threshold, meaning
that most financial-industry stocks and companies with high debt are
off limits. In addition, investors seeking to follow Islamic religious
principles generally seek to avoid so-called sin stocks, such as those
issued by firms that profit from alcohol, pornography or gambling.
Investments in pork-related businesses are also not permitted.

Jewish

Jewish religious teachings are set forth in the Talmud and in terms of
investments, promote diversification. While less formal than some
of the other religions, socially responsible investing is often closely
associated with Jewish investment strategies. Some Jewish investors
also avoid investing in countries that sponsor terror. Other funds
seek to provide the compassionate use of money to foster community development in areas such as affordable housing, small
businesses and community facilities. This mandate is based on the

Jewish belief in helping the poor. One fund invests exclusively in
Israeli companies traded on Tel Aviv and U.S. markets.

Protestant

Ranging from liberal to conservative, Protestant denominations tend to encourage individuals to make investments based
on broad Christian values, such as social consciousness. They
discourage investments in sin stocks, such as those affiliated
with tobacco, gambling, alcoholic drinks, high-interest lending
or human embryonic cloning. They also seek to avoid firms that
cause environmental damage from greenhouse gasses and businesses that do not engage in fair trade.

Mennonite

According to Linda Gellman, in her article on faith-based investing (Investing as a religious practice) in the Wall Street Journal,
some other faith-based funds will use positive and negative
screens to focus their investment power on enterprises they deem
worthwhile and financially sound. One Mennonite mutual fund
family uses negative screens to avoid investing in companies
involved with abortion, military weapons, tobacco and gambling,
among other issues. These funds also use positive screens to
allocate 5 to 10 percent of their assets toward environmentally
responsible causes, a concern rooted in the belief that human
beings should tend to all of Gods creations.

Other options for putting your money where

your faith is

Many faiths have a practice of tithing, or contributing a certain

percentage of your income to the church or organization to which
you belong. Donations to nonprofit entities, including churches,
offer tax deductions in return for your good deed. Including your
church, synagogue or special cause can also be included when
planning your estate, so that you can transfer your wealth in a
manner that supports your personal religious belief.

Your personal
power
Have you given yours away?

By Carol Michalski

Youve always had the power my dear, you

just had to learn it for yourself. Glinda,

the Good Witch, The Wizard of Oz

she had given her personal power away!

Has this happened to you?
Sometimes we get caught up in the idea
that theres nothing we can do, but this is
not true. Just because there are challenges
and limitations, it doesnt mean we are
powerless to change things.
Some people see themselves in the
drivers seat of their lives, while others feel
they are in the passenger seat being taken
for a ride! Which one are you? Stop being
frustrated with how your life is going;
climb into that drivers seat and take your

few weeks ago I had a conversation

with a client who was floundering under an avalanche of work.
Although she is an upper level manager,
with authority and a budget at her disposal,
she reported feeling helpless. I asked her,
What stops you from using your power?
She was shocked speechless! She began to
recognize that somewhere along the line,

personal power back. The first step is

recognizing how you are giving it away.
Lets take a look!

The way that we talk to

ourselves

Do you recognize some of the statements

below? If so, you are giving away your
personal power just by the way you talk to
yourself!
They never let me
Jim was doing it so
I never get to do what I want to do.
I cant do it.
Its not fair.
If you hear yourself saying one or all of
these things, ask yourself, Is this really
true? For example, lets imagine you catch
yourself saying, They never let me do it
the way I think it should be done. Now
ask yourself whether this statement is true.
Have you ever presented a plan? Have you
put your idea forward? Have you tried to
demonstrate your knowledge, skills and
effectiveness to those who would ultimately OK the idea?
To regain personal power, it is imperative that we change the way we talk to
ourselves and focus on what we can do!

The way we choose to

perceive things

Do you ever view things in this way?

You feel like others control your life.
You try to be like others, thinking that
www.naturespathways.com

this is the pathway to a better life.

You feel someone is holding you back

from reaching your full potential.

You believe you lack the support to be

successful.

If you have any of these perceptions, ask

yourself if the perception is true or merely
a point of view. We choose how we perceive
the world. There are many alternative world
views for any event good, bad or indifferent! Choose to see each event as an opportunity and the world will open up for you.

Inaction

You always wait for directions.

You dont set any personal goals.
You give up if you are not immediately

good at something.

You resist change.

If you are waiting for someone your

spouse, significant other, boss, teacher,
etc. to hand you the ticket to success,
its going to be a long wait. Get into that
drivers seat we were talking about and
start steering!

Seek to be strong and nice. It is not an

either-or situation. In my work, I have
seen too many nice people get the doormat
treatment because all they had was a need
to be nice and they have given up all of
their personal power. Endeavoring to keep
everyone happy in your world is an exercise in futility, frustration and exhaustion.
Besides that, it never works!
Its not your job to make people happy;
its your job to be you not the person
others want you to be, but your authentic
self. One who has clarity about your own
values. One who is willing to accept that
not everyone will like you, or agree with
you, and thats OK. That is claiming your
personal power!

Garden pizza

By Emily Niesen

Homemade pizza is great any time of the

year, but its cheaper and more flavorful
when you can use ingredients from your
garden, a friends garden or the farmers
market! Change up the ingredients so that
everyone will enjoy. Make each third of the
pizza different in order to please a crowd:
meat eaters, all veggie, no cheese, spicy,
sweet, etc.

What you need

Favorite pizza crust: homemade or favorite healthy storebought. Recommended dough: Willy Street Co-op, Whole
Foods and Piggly Wiggly. Feeling creative? Try a flax, cauliflower or cornmeal crust.
Sauce
One jar of tomato sauce (or make your own using garden
tomatoes)
One garlic, minced
teaspoon hot sauce
teaspoon each of dried marjoram, dried basil, dried
oregano, onion powder
1 tablespoon chopped parsley
Pizza toppings
cup red onion, sliced
3 cups baby spinach
6 ounces mushrooms, sliced
cup feta cheese

Other suggested topping combinations: asparagus and mushroom; chicken, pesto and roma tomato; Canadian bacon and
pineapple; bell pepper and sweet corn. You name it!

What to do

For sauce: Over high heat, combine all ingredients in a small

saucepan. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer uncovered
until flavors are blended, about 10 minutes. If making homemade
sauce, just cook fresh tomatoes with preferred herbs and spices
like basil and garlic. Simmer 30 minutes, blending is optional.
Meanwhile, prepare pizza crust according to package
instructions. Prebake (usually about 8 minutes at 450 degrees).
Option for toppings: Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in saut
pan and saut onions and mushrooms about 5 minutes. Add in
spinach until slightly wilted.
Spread sauce on prebaked crust, top with raw or sauted
veggies and cheese.
Bake about 10 minutes. Slice into wedges or squares. Serve
immediately with a garden salad.

Its pumpkin
season for
your
pets too!

By Kathleen Folz

he orange glow from a pumpkin signals fall is in the

air. When we see the fall harvest of pumpkins we plan
for the jack-o-lanterns that will light our porch and for
the seasonal aroma of a freshly baked pie. The goodness of the
pumpkin is something we can share with our pets too!
Pumpkins are a great source of dietary fiber. According to Dr.
Karen Becker, DVM, this fiber is well-known to be an effective
prebiotic in the gut. A prebiotic is the fiber needed in the gut to
support the good gut flora (probiotics) needed for digestion. Often,
dogs and cats suffering from loose stool may benefit from the addition of pumpkin given in their food. Likewise, the soluble fiber in
pumpkin adds bulk to the stool which may help a pet suffering from
constipation. As always, consult your holistic/integrative veterinarian if problems of diarrhea or constipation persist.
Pumpkins also provide a good source of other vitamins and
minerals, such as vitamins A, E, several B vitamins and potassium. Low in calories, pumpkin may be a helpful addition to a
weight-conscious diet for an overweight pet.
If pumpkin is new to your pets diet, here are some helpful tips
for introducing and serving.
Pumpkin should be baked or boiled and mashed when adding
to your dog or cats diet. Organic canned pumpkin is a quick and
easy addition too. Make sure you are purchasing 100 percent
pumpkin and not pie filling with added sugar and spices.
Introduce pumpkin slowly by offering a teaspoon (or
teaspoon for very small dogs) for the first day and slowly increasing to the desired amount.
Many dogs and cats enjoy pumpkin by itself. If your pet is not
so excited, mix it into your pets food.
If you are using pumpkin to help your overweight dog or cat
feel full, remember to cut back slightly on the amount of your
pets regular food.
www.naturespathways.com

Pumpkin may be used in place of peanut butter or other fattening fillers for food-stuffable dog toys. Put mashed or canned
pumpkin in a sealable plastic sandwich bag, snip off a corner and
squeeze pumpkin into the toy and freeze for a long-lasting treat.
Mix pumpkin with plain yogurt and a pinch of cinnamon.
Freeze in small portions for warm weather snacks or serve a
spoonful while you enjoy your pumpkin pie!
Dont forget the seeds! Wash and dry the seeds (no salt added
for your pooch, please!). Grind and sprinkle a bit on your dogs
food for a protein-, vitamin- and mineral-packed addition!

The wonder of water

Opening doors of wisdom

By Kim Hall

hh! Can you feel the sensation

associated with this sound? Its the
feeling of exhilaration of a cool
shower on a hot day, a quenching gulp of
water after a good work out or simply a
warm rain followed by a magical rainbow.
Water: its what we are made of; its a lifesustaining ingredient that is part of every
second of every day. In fact, each one of
us is surrounded by water upon conception and, for some, upon baptism. At this
moment, over 70 percent of our body and
85 percent of our brain is water.

immense. It quenches our thirst, reflects
like a mirror, freezes, vaporizes, steams,
melts and more. It cleanses us inside and
out, invigorates us, and nourishes us. We
can bathe in it, swim in it, float in it, sled
on it, ice skate on it and more.
Its because of water the world flourishes;
all grows because of its presence. Its more
important to our bodies than food and is
soon to be more valuable than gold. Some

Nisleits Country
Inn continues a
33-year
tradition

THE FAMILY-OWNED restaurant tradition continues for Steve

and Linda Nisleit.

Steves lifelong dream was to own his own restaurant after
spending several of his younger years working at his grandparents restaurant in Random Lake. He purchased a building in need

of much repair in 1979, and two years later opened it to the public
in 1981. Thirty-three years later, Steve and his family are still very
dedicated to the dream and to providing all of their customers a
pleasurable dining out experience.
The atmosphere is very warm and welcoming with a just like
home feel, completed by a fireplace in the main dining room. It is a
great place to go and celebrate a couples special event or larger groups
can be accommodated in the banquet room with reservations.
Linda is an avid violinist and to make your celebration dinner extra
special, will play tableside by request plus it is complimentary!
The menu offers a wide variety of selections, many of them
being deliciously homemade. The house specialties are served
with freshly baked bread and honey cinnamon butter, a choice
of potato, homemade soup or garden salad. Most main entres
include fresh seasonal vegetables. Delicious and nutritious!
The seafood selections are my personal favorites. Broiled farmraised tilapia filets, wild-caught grilled salmon filets and handbreaded butterfly shrimp are some of the best, to recommend a
few. If its a Friday night, I highly recommend the Baked Stuffed
Cod Hollandaise. The entre is an 8-ounce serving of cod, stuffed
with Nisleits homemade crab meat stuffing and served with
drawn butter. Homemade potato pancakes are offered as a potato
choice. This entre is truly a Nisleits Specialty!
The next time you are planning a special date, celebrating a
special occasion, or are simply looking for a family night out, be
sure to plan dinner with Steve and Linda at Nisleits Country Inn
near beautiful Port Washington.

Things to
consider when
choosing a
veterinarian

et owners must make a bevy of decisions regarding their

pets. What to feed their animals, how often to exercise
them and how to curtail certain behaviors are a few of the
more significant decisions facing pet owners every day.
Choosing a veterinarian is another important decision pet
owners must make. But choosing a vet is more than just finding
one close to home. The right veterinarian does more than conduct
checkups, detect illnesses and prescribe medications. A good
veterinarian will make an animal feel comfortable, even during
vet visits that tend to be stressful for pets unaccustomed to offices
and physical examinations. Pet owners who want the best veterinarian for their pets should consider a host of factors before
choosing a vet to treat their animals.

Flexibility

Pet problems do not always happen during working hours on

weekdays. If a pet is not feeling well during the day, it cant call
its owner on the phone and ask to be taken to the vet. As a result,
emergency vet visits are often after working hours when owners
arrive home and discover that their pet is sick. When choosing a
veterinarian, make sure the vets schedule is compatible with your
own, and that the office hours are flexible. This flexibility reduces
the likelihood that you will skip vet visits because they must be
scheduled at times that are inconvenient to your own schedule,
and it also provides you with peace of mind that your vet can be
contacted should an emergency arise.

Breed

Some veterinarians specialize in particular animals. For example,

equine veterinarians work exclusively with horses. But many veterinarians treat a host of animals, including birds, cats, dogs and other
common domesticated pets. However, some veterinarians are
www.naturespathways.com

known to be especially effective with certain breeds, even if they

still treat various types of animals. Some vets might specialize in
treating especially exotic breeds of cat, while others might have a
reputation for working especially well with English bulldogs.
Owners of purebred dogs or other less common pets might
want to find a veterinarian with a track record for treating their
particular type of animal. Such vets might be more comfortable
with your pet or more familiar with, and therefore quicker to
recognize, any ailments that might be common to the breed.

Payment options

Veterinary care can be expensive, especially when pets are not

insured. No pet owner wants to find himself in a position where
resources fall short of the money needed to effectively treat a
pet. Many veterinarians will work with pet owners to establish a
payment plan if owners cant pay for treatment upfront. But dont
assume all veterinarians are open to such arrangements.
Before choosing a veterinarian, discuss potential payment
options should the cost of care one day exceed your resources.
This is especially important for owners of exotic pets or purebred
dogs, which tend to encounter more unusual ailments that can be
costly to treat.

Atmosphere

The atmosphere of a veterinary office should be considered as well.

If the atmosphere is hostile or unaccommodating, pets are likely to
stress out when visiting, making it more difficult for vets to do their
job. Look for an atmosphere that aims to put pets at ease. In addition, monitor the interactions between staff and the pets, paying
close attention to how your animal is treated on its visit.

Release treatment involves applying sustained gentle pressure and movement into the fascia in order
