Subject : Chemistry Strength : 20
Unit : Separation of mixture Dur : 40 mts
Topic : Fractional Distillation
Curricular statement
To get an awareness about the content fractional distillation through discussion,
observation, experiments to evaluate through group discussion and asking question

Content analysis
Fractional distillation
Fractionating column
Facts
Ethanol and Methanol are two immiscible solvents
Fractional distillation is the process by which components in a chemical mixture are
separated according to their different boiling point.
Crude oil is an example for fractional distillation
The components of crude oil are petrol, diesel, kerosene
Ammonia is manufactured by combining nitrogen and hydrogen
Nitrogen is obtained by separating it from air
The components of air can be separated by using fractional distillation
Concepts
The concept of Fractional distillation
Definitions
Fractional Distillation is the process by which components in a chemical mixture are
separated according to their different boiling points

Friendly talk with the Teacher and the Student.

Do you heard about Ethanol & Methanol

Do you Know what is the boiling point of Ethanol & Methanol

The boiling point of Ethanol is 78.29
0
c

Methanol boiling point is 64.7
0
c

Is there any difference in their boiling point

How can the component of liquids be separated if there is only a small difference
in their boiling point

Now we are learning more about the technique

Presentation
The students is divided into different groups

Activity-1

Teacher shows a picture of an equipment for the separation of Ethanol &
Methanol

Yes

No

A small
difference

We dont
know

Conclusion

Ethanol & Methanol are Completely miscible liquids, they have only small
difference in their boiling points

Activity 2

Teacher Shows images of a video of the Fractional Distillation

Discussion Points

What is fractional distillation

Conclusion

When the vapours of the mixture pass through the fractionating column, due to
the repeated condensation and evaporation. The vapours of Methanol ,with a
lower boiling point first passes out of the fractionating column, contents and get
collected in the conical flasks after this, Ethanol which has a slidely higher boiling
point can be collected in similar fashion in another flask. If there are more than
two components in the mixture, they can also be separated on the basis of the
increasing order of their boiling points. This method is called Fractional
distillation

their
different
boiling points

Discussion Points
Is there any difference between the boiling point of Ethanol &
Methanol
What is the name of this techniques

Discussion Points

What is fractional distillation

Activity 3

Teacher shows a chart for the definition of fractional distillation

Fractional Distillation
A process by which components in a chemical mixture are separated
according to their different boiling points

Activity 4
Teacher shows the picture of the separation of Crude oil

Conclusion

Crude oil can be separated by using fractional distillation

Activity 5
Teachers shows a chart for the separation of different components in air

The students
watching the
Chart

It is a mixture

etc

Discussion Points

What is a crude oil ?

What is the components of crude oil?

Review questions
What is fractional distillation?

Follow up activity
Find out more examples of situation in which fractional distillation are used and not
down in your science diary

Conclusion

The lowest boiling point component obtained first. The highest boiling
point component obtained last.

Oxygen
Nitrogen
