Kimya Dawson Tree Hugger

Pre-Chorus:
The flower said, "I wish I was a tree"
The tree said, "I wish I could be
A different kind of tree"
The cat wished that it was a bee
The turtle wished that it could fly
Really high into the sky
Over rooftops and then dive
Deep into the sea

Chorus:
And in the sea there is a fish
A fish that has a secret wish
A wish to be a big cactus
With a pink flower on it
And in the sea there is a fish
A fish that has a secret wish
A wish to be a big cactus
With a pink flower on it

And the flower
Would be its offering
Of love to the desert
And the desert
So dry and lonely
That the creatures all
Appreciate the effort

And the rattlesnake said
"I wish I had hands so
I could hug you like a man"
And then the cactus said
"Don't you understand
My skin is covered with sharp spikes
That'll stab you like a thousand knives.
A hug would be nice
But hug my flower with your eyes"

Pre-Chorus

Chorus

And in the sea there is a fish
A fish that has a secret wish
A wish to be a big cactus
With a pink flower on it
And in the sea there is a fish
A fish that has a secret wish
A wish to be a big cactus
With a pink flower on it

And the flower
Would be its offering
Of love to the desert
And the desert
So dry and lonely
That the creatures all
Appreciate the effort

Justification:
The main reason we chose this song is because of its interesting rhythm and very
suitable for the students in primary school level. The singer sings this song in a relaxing
mood to make it sounds like a nursery rhyme. In other words, this song can be used for the
stated language specification as the song is very interesting and the students will be able to
enjoy this song. In other words, this song can be very useful in creating a conducive
classroom indirectly reduces the stresses among the students and make them feel more
relax whether to be used during the beginning or the end of the lesson.
Activities based on Total Physical Response (TPR) such as clapping hands also can
be used in using this song. This is because the song has a lot of lines that rhyme with each
other. The students can clap their hands by following the rhyme and the beat of the song.
The benefit of rhyme is that it helps the student to memorise word and phrase whether in
term of spelling or in term of grammar.
As we can see from the songs, it uses accurate grammars and by remembering the
lyric, the students can use the lyric to relate it with their writing or speaking in improving their
ability to use correct grammar. In term of readability, the words used in this poem are mostly
familiar words for the year four students and the message of this song is very straight
forward without any hidden meaning. These will ease the students to understand the lyric of
the song and enjoy the teaching and learning process very well.
Under the theme World of Knowledge, the students might indirectly be able to identify
the characteristic of the cactus, a type of plant that they might have never seen before. For
an example from the lyric My skin is covered with sharp spikes and And the flower, would
be its offering they will be able to know that a cactus is covered with sharp needles and a
flower can grow at the top of a cactus tree. Not only that, the phrase of love to the desert
can indicate that cactuses usually grow on the dessert area. What we conclude here is that,
this song can give new knowledge to the listeners and the students on the cactus tree.
