Hi and welcome to the third edition of the Fantasy Freakos pre-season rave. With only one more week of NAB Cup games to come, there are still plenty of
unknowns as we look at finalising our squads, with the biggest of those the rookies. Injuries hit hard last week, with both James Magner and Lachie Neale
going down, while there were several others that didnt even get a game, such as Sam Darley and Steven Morris. With squad sizes reduced back to the
conventional 22 this week, its vital that you monitor the final teams, as this gives us the clearest indication of who will be in the mix for a Round 1 start.
Enjoy this weeks read and dont forget to follow me on twitter. Get exclusive AFL Dream Team information from the NAB Cup/Challenge games live and post
match.
MID-PRICED GEMS
As was outlined in the 2012 AFL Prospectus, the mid-priced strategy was on the way out, and the guns-rookies approach was now the way to go. In saying
that though, there will always be room for a mid-pricer, especially if you pick the right player. This year there is a decent group to choose from, with the likes
of Hamish McIntosh, Chris Masten and Hayden Ballantyne all players that have been spoken about glowingly this pre-season.
Of that trio, Chris Masten looks to be the one to jump on early after his scintillating early season form. A perennial underachiever, this looks to be his year. He
ranks second in the competition for DT points scored across the pre-season behind Jack Redden, scoring 89 and 96 in his two full outings. He finished with
19 disposals against the Saints in his most recent match, but he scored almost half of his points from tackles alone, applying 10.
Below I have identified a group of mid-pricers that should be considered for your starting squad, with the likes of John McCarthy and Ivan Maric presenting
great value at their second AFL club.

The term player management was one fantasy coaches heard far too often
last season. Chris Scott and Geelong led that charge, with the Cats the only
side in the AFL not to have anyone play in all 22 H&A matches. Sadly from a
fantasy perspective this was seen as a masterstroke by the rookie coach, and
several other coaches have since signalled their intentions to do likewise.
Brett Ratten has already got on the front foot and declared that Carlton was
likely to rest its stars also, with Chris Judd and Marc Murphy two prime
candidates to miss games. Several other big names, headed by Dean Cox
and Nick Riewoldt are also expected to be rested during the year. Below I
have identified which players with fantasy relevance could be rested this
season based on comments already made by key figures.

JASON PORPLYzIA
Porplyzia is making it very difficult not to pick him. I put a line through
him a few weeks ago, but hes doing his best to force his way back
into my side. He starred last week against the Magpies with four goals
straight and 84 DT points, finishing with 13 disposals, six marks and
three tackles. If he has another solid hitout against West Coast, Ill have
no choice but to reinstate him.
van Berlo finished last season off in blazing fashion, and he looks to
have taken that form into 2012. From Round 19 onwards last year only
Dane Swan scored more DT points in the league, averaging 122 points
per game. Hes definitely a unique option for your midfield if you are
looking to be a little different.

MITCHELL GOLBY
Golby has been a surprise packet for Brisbane, ranking third at the club
for DT points scored behind Jack Redden and Tom Rockliff during the
NAB Cup. With a lot of coaches opting for Brian Lake or Ryan Hargrave as
mid-pricers in defence, he could be worth a punt if youre after someone
unique.

Im sure plenty of coaches would have started with Rowe in their side,
but after his performances so far, all would have given him the boot.
He has been a massive disappointment so far, but being a key-position
player its no real surprise. He played a full match last week against
Brisbane, finishing with a dismal seven disposals and 24 DT points.

STEELE SIDEBOTTOM
TRAvIS CLOkE
I expect Sidebottom to take his game to another level this year. Hes
been a solid scorer across his career so far, averaging 80 DT points
per match, but I think hes capable of hitting the 90 mark this year. Hes
likely to spend more time in the midfield this season and his DPP status
makes picking him that much easier. He top scored for the Magpies last
week against the Crows, finishing with 21 disposals and 87 points.
As I mentioned in the first rave of the pre-season, Cloke is the only other
key-forward I would consider besides Lance Franklin. He monstered his
opponents last season, ranking equal-first in the AFL for marks and No.1
for contested marks, while also booting the equal second-most goals
behind Buddy. Even if he does have an off day in front of goal, hell make
up for that with the amount of ball he attracts. Strongly consider him.

ESSENDON
COURTENAY DEMPSEY
JOBE wATSON
Prior to getting injured in Round 8 last season, Watson was the form
player of the competition, ranking No.1 for DT points scored, racking up
65 more than his closest rival Marc Murphy. He struggled with injury for
the remainder of the year, and based on that hes well underpriced going
into 2012. Coming off a career-high average of 99 points, hes a steal!
Dempsey demonstrated last week that he has fully recovered from the
serious knee injury that ended his 2011 campaign. He moved with plenty
of freedom, finishing with 17 disposals and 54 DT points and based on
his discounted price, hes worth monitoring this week. In his last full
season in 2010, he was a solid performer averaging a career-high 18
disposals and 72 points per match.

LACHIE NEALE
MATTHEw PAvLICH
Neale injured his ankle midway through the third term last week and is
now in serious doubt for Round 1. The club expects him to miss 2-3
weeks, but does that mean we jump ship and replace him? Even with
so much love for him from Ross Lyon, its hard to commit to someone
whos injured and unproven from a DT perspective. Hopefully we dont
see him until at least Round 5-6.

GEELONG CATS
ORREN STEPHENSON
TOM GILLIES
Stephenson has been far from convincing this NAB Cup, and despite
being a mature-age player at the low price, Im strongly considering
giving him the chop. Hes been sparingly used so far, managing only
five disposals and 25 DT points from half a game last week against the
Tigers. With Jonathan Giles and Jarrad Redden in decent form, theyve
now become the preferred ruck bench duo.
Gillies was always going to be given an opportunity this year, but hes
way too defensive to be considered in DT, even at his low price. He could
only manage seven disposals and 20 points last week against Richmond
despite playing 95% of the game, which says it all. Look elsewhere for a
cash cow in your defence.

FantasyFreako
@FantasyFreako - Geelong finished with 127 fewer disposals, 44 fewer
marks and 15 fewer inside 50s than Richmond last week in what was a dismal
display.
AARON HALL
All eyes will be on the Gold Coast line up this week to see if Hall finally
returns. After starring in the opening round of the NAB Cup, hes
missed the past two matches with a hamstring complaint. His fitness is
paramount given that hes one of very few rookie forwards that look like
scoring well enough to start on the ground.
I know hes only played half a game and it was against the Giants, but
its hard not to get excited about Caddy. This kid will be a DT jet in no
time, but his starting price this season is somewhat of a deterrent. He
collected eight disposals and 60 points in the second half last week
the most of any Gold Coast player and the fourth-most of any player for
the half.

FantasyFreako
@FantasyFreako - From all reports Jared Brennan will be used in a roaming
role in defence this year. He knows how to find the ball and could be a unique
option for your side.
JAMES MCDONALD
The focus has been on Dylan Shiel for some time now, but that will
surely change now that Miles has fired. He dominated last week against
the Suns, finishing with 24 disposals, seven marks, one goal and 99 DT
points the third-most on the ground. He was a prolific scorer in the
NEAFL last season, averaging the most points of any Giants player (103
per game).
I know most coaches have already McDonald pencilled into their side,
but Im starting to wonder if he will provide as much value as we expect
him to. For starters hell be a prime candidate for the red vest, so that
clearly affects his money making potential. Opting to go for fellow
mature-ager Stephen Clifton may be the way to go, even though he
costs us more.

JORDAN LEwIS
I would have been one of thousands of coaches that jumped off Hodge
last year after he lost his DPP status. He ended up having a solid year
in the end, averaging 24 disposals and 94 DT points per match, only
slightly down on his 2010 average. I expect him to reproduce those
numbers this year if not exceed them, so keep him on your radar.
Lewis is one of several midfielders from 2011 that have been awarded
DPP status this year, making him a prime target for the forward line. He
ranked seventh at the club for both disposals and DT points scored last
season, cracking the ton in nine games, scoring 120 plus four times.
Lewis is called upon to perform a defensive job at time though, so keep
this in mind before committing.

MELBOURNE
JAMES MAGNER
MITCHELL CLARk
There was genuine concern last week when Magner went off injured
early in the first quarter. As it turns out he only suffered a dislocated
finger, so he should be right to go in the season opener given he gets
promoted to the senior list. He hasnt been named to face Port Adelaide
this week though, which could be a blow to his Round 1 chances.
Theres one thing for sure, Clark will lead Melbourne for goals this
season. He looks to be the only player capable of taking a grab and
kicking a goal, but does that equate into DT selection? Clark played is
best football as a ruckman in 2009, averaging 94 DT points per game,
but sadly we wont see him in that role at the Demons, which basically
rules him out.

BRENT HARvEY
Anthony looks to have taken over from Brady Rawlings in that sweeping
role across half-back. This means that there will be plenty of cheap
disposals up for grabs, and as a mid-priced midfielder hes worth having
a look at. Hes a proven ball-winner, ranking in the top-three at the club
in disposals per minute in each of his three seasons so far.

FantasyFreako
@FantasyFreako - Sam Gibson has fallen off the radar, managing a teamlow 12 minutes last week against the Bulldogs.
PORT ADELAIDE
JARRAD REDDEN
ROBBIE GRAY
Even though Aaron Sandilands didnt play last week, Redden showed
enough to keep him on my radar. On form alone, he would have to go
into Round 1 as the No.1 ruckman, despite the return of Brent Renouf
against Fremantle. If youre someone that is going in with a rookie as
your No.2, he would now have to be the front-runner for the starting
berth, overtaking Jonathan Giles.
Gray finally took a step forward last season, playing in all 22 games and
averaging career-highs for both disposals and DT points. He started the
year as a small forward, averaging 65 points per game between Rounds
1-11, but upon a move into the midfield in Round 13 he exploded,
averaging 96 points per match for the remainder of the year. Gray has to
be in the mix based on those numbers.

@FantasyFreako - I always knew that John McCarthy would be a hit at the
Power. He racked up 64 DT points from only a half against the Dockers.
RICHMOND
BRETT DELEDIO
IvAN MARIC
Like many of us, I was expecting Deledio to play at least a half last week
against Geelong, but he missed out yet again. If he doesnt get named
this week against the Giants, he could go into Round 1 without any
games under his belt. Im sure Richmond will seek approval for him to
play at least one VFL game prior to Round 1, so hopefully he gets some
match practice.
Richmond identified Maric as the man to lead the ruck brigade and
he could very well end up being one of the recruits of the year. He
dominated last week against the Cats, albeit against Trent West and
Orren Stephenson, finishing with 15 disposals, five marks and 22
hitouts. He wont post massive scores regularly this year, but what he
will do is provide great value for your investment.

AHMED SAAD
After missing the Essendon no-show match a few weeks ago with
soreness and last weeks trip to Perth, Saad returns to the side to
face Collingwood this Friday. Scott Watters has declared he was in
contention to play in the season opener which is great news for us. A
good performance will hopefully see him debut against Port Adelaide in
Round 1.
Ledger has impressed this pre-season and is in the mix to play against
Port Adelaide in Round 1. He was the starting sub in both his games last
season and hell more than likely play a similar role this year when he
plays, so be wary of this. He finished with 13 disposals and 34 DT points
last week against West Coast from 63% game time.

SYDNEY SwANS
HARRY CUNNINGHAM
LUkE PARkER
With Sydney placing Alex Brown on the long-term injury list, a position
has opened for a rookie to get elevated. Considering that Cunningham
was the only rookie listed player to feature last week against Essendon,
he surely has to be first in line to get the nod. He didnt do much after
coming on as the sub, finishing with only three disposals, but two of
these resulted in goals.
If youre after an alternative to a Chris Masten as a mid-priced midfielder, you could do a lot worse than picking Parker. This kid has been
nothing short of impressive since debuting last season, attacking the
contest with as much ferocity as team mate Jude Bolton, a player he
has been earmarked to take over in the midfield. Parker finished with 21
disposals, two goals and 84 DT points last week against the Bombers.

@FantasyFreako - Stay away from Mitch Morton. Hes shown nothing so far
to even be considered for a starting squad.
kOBY STEvENS
If Stevens plays a full game this week against Adelaide, then hell be
a certain starter come Round 1. After a strong pre-season, he is one
player the Eagles expect to step up this year and considering his rookie
price, hes close to a must have. Entering his third season, a breakout
could be on the cards.

wESTERN BULLDOGS
CHRISTIAN HOwARD
CLAY SMITH
Howard could be the bolter at the Bulldogs this season. The competition
will be tough though for a place in defence, especially now that Ryan
Hargrave looks to be back to full fitness, while the likes of Easton Wood,
Robert Murphy and Lindsay Gilbee will all be fighting it out for spots. If
Howard looks like getting early games, he could be prove to be a wise
choice.
Smith is every chance of making his debut against West Coast in Round
1, but avoid starting him on the ground as hes likely be given the green
vest. In a team missing the likes of Matthew Boyd and Daniel Cross last
week against the Kangaroos, he did his chances no harm, finishing with
22 disposals, six marks and 76 DT points.

@FantasyFreako - Tom Campbell came from nowhere last week to finish
with three goals and 78 DT points. Hes a rookie though so he wont be
