Dear Prof. XXX,
I am XXX and I hold a bachelor degree holder of Social Sciences (Hons) in Sociology from XX University in Hong Kong. I am writing to express my keen interest in Masters Degree Programme in Modern Indian Studies at the University of Gttingen. I believe that my prior educational background and experience with Indian society form a solid base to expand my knowledge at the Masters Degree programme. Nearly half of the credits during the first half of my bachelor degree studies had to be gained through completion of subjects such as Information technology, translation, history etc. Although not social-scientific in their nature, they helped me established a solid knowledge base for training in social sciences during the second half of my bachelor degree studies. The main scope of latter studies was social sciences on theoretical level and their practical application and their use in research. Four-year social sciences training equips me with a strong multi-disciplinary theoretical foundation and research skills that enhance intellectual, creative and practical capacity for analyzing events occurring in ever-changing society and worldwide. Hong Kong Caritas awarded me a sponsorship to volunteer in Kolkata, India in 2011. We, a group of 10 international volunteers conducted educational programmes for under-privileged children and renovated their school. Through the programme, we achieved crossed-cultural understandings and established awareness of global citizenship. The project was successful and attracted attention of local media. I did a personal travel in India later that year for six weeks. After my return, I learnt Hindi and I am learning Bharatanatyam, a form of traditional dance used to performed in Hindu temples and Sanskrit are sung. The dance facilitates my religious understanding of Hinduism.
The trips built up my interest of Indian society, particularly in socio-economic issues and NGO development. It is alarming that poverty is transformed into commodity and consumed by tourists from developed countries. The nature of some NGOs is twisted and unable to perform charitable functions. After I finish the studies, I would like to work for NGO or even set up my own one to make contribution to improve socio- economic status of Indian. Like what is written in Mother Theresas House in Kolkata Be the fire of my life. Taking into account aforementioned ambitions, I find the opportunity study abroad highly enriching. University of Gttingen disposes with the qualities to prepare me for such a career path. I sincerely hope that you will consider my application and grant me the opportunity to utilize my potential and ambitions in Indian studies.
