A Panel Discussion Keeping Arts and Culture Sustainable
in Rural Communities, Tursday, September 25 at 7 pm at
the Langham Cultural Society, Kaslo BC.
Te fourth talk in the Caf Langham Inspired Ideas
Speaker Series will consist of a panel discussion with in-
teresting and lively local and regional Basin folks, explor-
ing ideas of sustainability for the arts, culture and heritage
in rural communities. Speakers will include Joy Barrett
(Nelson), Helen Sebelius (Slocan Valley), Sarah Lawless
(Kaslo), Deb Borsos (Argenta) and others.
Te panel will explore methods of engaging community
in a larger context; how to keep culture and heritage and
the arts alive and how to stay current in rural commun-
ities. Whether the cultural issue is logging, hockey, gar-
dening or the visual, performing or literary arts, the panel
will examine the economics, public art policies, the quality
of life and ones sense of identity in rural areas.

Joy Barrett is currently the cultural development of cer
for the city of Nelson and the
executive director of the Castlegar
Sculpturewalk. Her career in-
cludes running an innovative arts
performance research lab at the
prestigious Central Saint Martins
School of Art & Design (Univer-
sity of the Arts London) and be-
ing the publicist for the Calgary
Centre for Performing Arts before
heading the Television & New
Media Co-production program at
the Banf Centre for the Arts.
Helen Sebelius currently owns
Against the Wind Nursery in the
Slocan Valley, and has worked
in the arts and culture sector as
a professional artist, arts edu-
cator/administrator/consultant,
and most recently as an in-
dependent curator. She has been
an instructor at the University
of Calgary and Alberta College
of Art and Design and held the
position of Academic Dean at
ACAD and was also Execu-
tive Director for the Kootenay
School of the Arts (KSA). Sebel-
ius has been an advocate for the
arts throughout her career, and
in 2002 was honoured with an
Alumni Award of Excellence
from the Alberta College of Art
& Design for her signifcant con-
tribution to building and sustain-
ing Canadas visual culture and cre-
ative industries.
Sarah Lawless, award winning
studio potter, currently lives in
Kaslo. Lawless is a recipient of a
BC Creative Achievement Award
for applied art & design and has
exhibited her work across

Calling All Young Seniors!

COSCO is coming to Nelson to inspire leadership train-
ing for young seniors. COSCO (Council Of Seniors Cit-
izens Organizations of British Columbia) is presenting a
two day workshop in Nelson on October 8-9, for seniors
organizations and those organizations working with sen-
iors. Learning in Retirement is organizing the event.
Seniors organizations are struggling with the fact that
their leaders are aging and their ranks are thinning. A
number of organizations have already folded and to
counter this trend, COSCO is ofering this workshop to
entice younger seniors to develop leadership skills.
Te workshop will deal with a wide range of issues such as
leadership and changing demographics, requirements and
qualities of leadership, criteria for efective seniors organiz-
ations, conducting meetings, searching out talented volun-
teers, networking and lobbying, and advocacy and referrals.

one through death, the cycle of loss
through detachment, despair and
anger to recovery can be a lone-
ly, frightening and overwhelming
experience, even when family and
friends are trying to support us. A
grief support group provides a safe,
supportive environment where the
bereaved can learn that the way
they are experiencing their grief is
normal and very individual.
Grief is a healthy response to
loss that needs to be acknowledged
and expressed before we can move
on. Working through feelings
about losses and sharing them
with others who are also grieving
decreases our isolation and lone-
liness while helping us learn how
to experience and work through
our pain. Nelson & District Hos-

to organize a community shore-
line clean-up in the north end of
Kootenay Lake. On Sunday, Sep-
tember 28, 10 am 1 pm we will
rendezvous at the Argenta boat
launch (4.3 km south from inter-
section of Duncan Lake Road
and Argenta Johnsons Landing
Road.)
Take action against shoreline
garbage by joining us. Bring your
boots and work gloves. Tere will
also be a BBQ and refreshments
on the beach to fuel the volun-
teers!
Although this is quite a pris-
tine area, there is a lot of garbage
along the shoreline at the north
end of Kootenay Lake. Tis event

And he is good. Javier is precise, observant and emo-
tionally ruthless, and his manipulations never fail until
the day he slips up. One of his clients ends up tangled in a
cult run by an ex-Nazi with torturous ties to the Pinochet
dictatorship, a man with no conscience or fear and Javier
quickly realizes that he may have met his match.
Avi Silberstein was born in Chile in 1982. He moved to
Canada in 2000. He is the director of the Grand Forks &
District Public Library. Human Solutions was featured on
CBCs All Points West Summer Reading List, quite a feat
for a frst time novelist.

Hike for Hospice
Walk for Life
Looking for an outdoor activity, fun
and community involvement? Partici-
pate in a community wide efort on
Sunday, September 28 to raise funds
for local Kaslo and North Kootenay
Lake Area Hospice services.
Young and old, hikers, walkers, jog-
gers, scooter riders, wheelchair par-
ticipants, and dog companions are all
welcome to participate in this event.
Hospice services in our area are
increasing as awareness of the im-
portance of supportive programs
surrounding death and dying grows.
Events such as this one are held all
over the world to raise support and
awareness for the work of
Hospice organizations.
Participants start with
pledge forms, and an infor-
mation sheet available at
Kaslo Florist, Sunnyside Nat-
urals, Cornucopia, Penny-
wise, Kaslo Seniors Hall,
and Willow Home Gallery.
Once donors have pledged
donations for the walk-
ers, they are ready to arrive
at the festive registration
area in the Kemball garden,
312 4th Street. Come by
1 pm on Sunday, and you
will be given a map and last
minute instructions.
Te 5 km route, which will
be supervised by volunteers,
covers both a 1.5 km easy
scooter portion and a long-
er, naturally beautiful Kaslo
River Trail portion. Te full
hike will take approximately
2 hours. Refreshments will be
served aferwards, and prizes
will be given for a number of
categories, including the one
with most money collected
from pledges.

In Te Valley
A new funding initiative in
the Slocan Valley will host a
series of community meet-
ings and an online survey
during September and Oc-
tober. Valley residents and organiza-
tions are welcome to contribute their
ideas on what valley-wide projects
would beneft the area the most.
With support from Columbia Basin
Trust, the Slocan Valley Economic
Development Commission (a body
of RDCK) is launching the Slocan
Valley Directed Fund. Te CBT in-
itiative helps sub-regions (a group of
communities from a recognized area)
to come together to plan, set priorities
and allocate funds for the long-term
betterment of the area as whole. Te
funds are to beneft the entire area, not
individual local community projects.
Te Slocan Valley, through the Eco-
nomic Development Commission,
will receive $300,000 in the frst three
years with the hope that the funding
continues into the future. According to
Leah Main, chair of the commission,
Its a good news story, but not without
a challenge. Te good news is we get
$100,000 a year for three years from
CBT, and get to create our priorities
and the process to use the money. Doing
that, of course, is also the challenge.
Tere will be ten meetings held in
the valley, some open community ses-
sions, where all ideas for projects will
be discussed and some meetings with
a specifc theme. Anyone may attend
any meeting. Te consulting group
Withinsight Services, of Nelson, will
facilitate the meetings and produce
recommendations for the commission.
Te commission will then choose a
small number of priorities to fund over
the next few years. All projects must
have an impact on the whole valley in
some way. According to Main, We
will thread our way through the pro-
cess and create an approach for using
the money that responds to needs of
the broader Slocan Valley Commun-
ity. Tis will help in a substantive way
to achieve the vision of social, eco-
nomic, cultural and environmental
development.

lived in Argenta (and there are many spread out across the

Great Performances Ahead!
Te Rossland Council for Arts and Culture (RCAC) an-
nual Performance Series kicks of on October 4. Te frst

the Rossland Miners Hall, with entertainment by Tillers

Announcing OBOK For 2014
Bobby Hutchinsons Blue Collar B&B, was chosen as
this years One Book One Kootenay (OBOK) because, it
made people laugh.
Te two other shortlisted OBOK titles had their cham-
pions. Te stories in, South of Elfrida by Holley Rubinsky,
were well written and insightful. Africas Unfnished Sym-
phony By Lucia Mann, was powerful and thought pro-
voking. But, the light-hearted anecdotes about the guests
at the Blue Collar B&B, struck the right note with the
readers, who voted, at their local libraries, for this years
OBOK. Im totally amazed, thrilled and delighted! Im
over the moon excited. Bobby Hutchinson exclaimed,
when she found out her book, Blue Collar B&B, was
selected. Such an efervescent reaction is typical of this

We live in an area that is dependent on our forests. Have
you ever wondered what its like to work in the bush?
What is going on in those cutblocks? Sometimes we see
the huge forestry machines on fatbed trailers driving by
on the highway they look intimidating massive and
complicated. But its our neighbours who operate them.
Its a living, and has been for generations for many fam-
ilies in our area.
In recognition of National Forest Week (September 21
27) the board of the Kaslo & District Community Forest
Society would like to invite you on a tour of our forests
from the mosses and fungi on the forest foor to logging
and trucking to the art and science of tending to the
new growth on the cutovers.
Peter McAllister, a woodlot owner and mushroom ex-
pert, will be your Kaslo River trail guide. Learn about for-
est ecology how to identify tree species and their uses,
mushrooms and other plants on the forest foor. Sabrina
Mutterer, the community forests silviculture manager,
will explain forest and woodlot stewardship. At cut block
#34 up Kemp Creek, watch (from a safe distance!) as Set-
tle Holdings demonstrate the harvesting equipment. Stan
Baker will be your guide to how the timber on the slopes
gets to the mill, eventually becoming the house you live in.
Two tours are scheduled for Saturday, September 27.
Te frst tour will start at 10:30 am, the second at 11:30;
the meeting place to begin is the Kaslo River Trail ped-
estrian bridge. It is expected that each tour will take be-
tween an hour and a half to two hours.
Tis is a rare chance to get a guided tour of the forest
and forestry operations in our area. Please pre-register if
you can by calling 250-353-7492. Drop-ins at the beet-col-
oured bridge are okay too. A snack and transportation to
the block and later, back to your cars or the trailhead will
be provided.

Teres No Place Like Home
He spent all summer training and fundraising, and then
another 11 days on the road cycling for local children.
Cst. Rob Gardner returned Sunday from a ten day, 1000
km cycling journey across southeastern British Colum-
bia as a part of the Cops for Kids Ride Team. Te annual
event raises funds and awareness for children in medical,
physical and traumatic crisis in our region, for the fund-
ing of medical equipment, therapies, travel to Childrens
Hospital, learning and mobility aids. Since 2001, Cops
for Kids has raised over $2.7 million in support of local
children and this years event added a record-breaking
$260,000 to that total.
During the ten day ride, Cops for Kids rode into 18 dif-
ferent communities across the region, where they were
generously hosted by local restaurants, hotels and service
groups to keep the team fueled and rested for the road.
It was great to arrive into my hometown of Castlegar
on day three, said Gardner. Afer climbing the Paulson
Summit, it was a nice coast down the hill to Boston Pizza
where we were met by our Little Ambassadors and friends
who generously opened their doors to feed and host the
team, before our overnight rest at the Super 8.
Tis was such a rewarding experience, he added. We
all know that its a tough physical challenge, but to be
rewarded by those smiling faces of the kids who beneft
from our eforts is really what makes it all worthwhile.
Cops for Kids provide assistance directly to children
who need it most from our region. Due to the over-
whelming number of grant requests, they are unable to
meet the demands and have established a wait list of chil-
dren needing essential medical equipment, specialized
therapies, and medical travel. Although their signature
event has wrapped up for the year, their need for funding
lasts throughout the year. Te group currently has a wait
list for funding, and they require year-round donations to
fund their requests until the 2015 ride.
I was one of the top fundraisers on the team this year,
summarized Gardner. And while I know Ive got my
work cut out for me to maintain that reputation as a top
fundraiser on the team, Im committed to make next year
even bigger and better.

Chorealis Vocal Ensemble In Kaslo
Chorealis Vocal Ensemble, as part of their fall tour, Path-
ways of Love, will have the pleasure of singing for a Kaslo
audience on Sunday afernoon, October 5, 2 pm at St. An-
drews United Church.
Te ensembles 11 members all live in the Okanagan,
from Salmon Arm through to Kelowna, and have been
enthusiastically singing together since 2008.
Chorealis performs a broad range of music, both sacred
and secular. Tey especially love singing early music, from
English madrigals to Latin motets, but are equally adept
at more modern repertoire, be it classical composition or
beloved Beatles tune. Te Chorealis Ensemble is a unique
vocal group, in that they do not have a conductor. Instead,
all singers contribute to create their fne, harmonious and
unaccompanied sound.
On October 5, Chorealis will present selections by Pas-
serau, Holst, Stenhammar, Corelli, Lennon and McCart-
ney and Piazzolla. Tickets are $15 and available at Sunny-
side Naturals, Willow Home Boutique and at the door.
