A SUMMARY OF ACCREDITATION TALK WHICH HELD ON
19
TH
MARCH 2014

Titles: The Meaning of Engineering, Engineer, Accreditation and Professionalism,
by Ir. Dr. Abdul Majid Bin Dato Abu Kassim
The Role of CIDB in Malaysia Construction Industry,
by Dr. Gerald Sundaraj

At the end of this talk, I was exposed to more details regarding to Engineering
Accreditation Council Malaysia (EAC). The most significant objective of accreditation
that I gained from the talk is to ensure that the accredited engineering programs carried
out by universities in Malaysia (local or private universities) satisfy the minimum
academic requirements for registration as a graduate engineer with the Board of
Engineers Malaysia (BEM) A body that regulates the practice of engineering under the
acts. (BEM) and for admission to membership of IEM in the grade of graduates. Via the
implementation of accreditation by EAC panels, it ensures the confirmation of that
offered program meets the criteria. In addition, accreditation would also provide public
knowledge of the offered program accredited by EAC. More importantly, EAC acts as a
basis for international comparability, reciprocal recognition and graduate mobility among
universities. Besides, accreditation is also a consultative feedback on the design of new
programs and modes of delivery and assistance in the promotion of innovation and good
educational practice in a university.
I was also revealed to the importance of engineers in Malaysia to have registered with
BEM under the act. Registration of Engineers Act (Act 138) was established in 1967, this
act provides for the registration of engineers, and the sole proprietorships, partnerships
and bodies corporate providing professional engineering services and for purposes
connected therewith.
Besides, I was introduced by Ir. Dr. the differences between Association of Consulting
Engineers Malaysia (ACEM), Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) and the Institution of
Engineers Malaysia (IEM). In short, BEM is the regulatory body constituted under the
Registration of Engineers Act 1967 which adjusts the practices of engineering under the
Act. However, ACEM is a professional trade organization registered under the Registrar
of Companies involving the directors, CEOs, chairmen or owners of engineering

consulting practices in this industry. IEM refers to a professional body registered under
the Registrar of Society which helps to promote the science and profession of engineering
in any of its disciplines, to facilitate the exchange of information or ideas in this
engineering-related field. This body comprises 30k plus memberships including student
members.
