By Ranganath Dommlapati
M2014CF022

Objective of the Organization
To create a meaningful learning environment for slow learners and children with learning
difficulties that are often academically underprepared And to provide students with a tailor
made educational program which caters to their educational needs.

Objective of the student
To learn the basics of social work while working with special needs children and to bring a
positive change for the organization and the lives of the students along with working on self-
learning.

Role in the agency
The basic role of a social work in such a setting is to understand the problems of the students
and how these problems effect their social life. Further the role includes working towards
betterment of the social situation for the students and decreasing the level to which they are
segregated from the society due to their learning difficulties.

Interventions
During the few months of this term regular interventions included understanding the
problems the children face and how they can be helped by taking appropriate sessions with
them. Sometimes the counsellors Ms Shamla and Ms Varsha were also involved in taking up
sessions for the students.
Major intervention included working towards bringing all alumni of the school from the past
few years together and understanding their problems and planning to work with the alumni to
reduce their problems and senior most students so that they dont face similar problems when
they become alumni of the school.
Home visit to one of the Alumnis home was also taken up as an intervention and regular
case work with one of the students along with group work for 3 groups was taken up.

Skills/Abilities that helped during the field work
Ability to understand and connect with young children and ability to have friendly
interactions with the elder ones and teachers was the skill most helpful during the first term of
field work. These skills helped in building a rapport with the organization and students that
made a good base to work on for the future to come.
The nag of ability to create or conduct activities through which children can either express
themselves or improve their skills also helped during the initial stages.

Areas requiring Improvement
The inability to be strict, especially with younger children and being too friendly with the
elder ones allows things to go out of hand and effects the discipline of the environment and
that is something that needs to be worked upon.
The act of making students, too dependent or too close to one self also affects the students
especially when the visits are as limited to as just twice a week is also an area of concern. For
example couple of students from the youngest batch didnt have their lunch properly after my
first week of visit as they were over pampered by me during the lunch break on first two
days.

Learning/skills developed during the field work
Understanding the various learning difficulties students face, the reasons by which these
might be developed and how they affect the students.
Developing skills on how to work with Children with special needs.
Understanding that children need to be made independent and need to be empathised with
not sympathised.
Understanding that people with special needs need to be treated just as any other normal
person would be and that they have same emotions and feelings like others.
Importance of praise, acceptance and personal attention to special needs children.
Organizational skills required to plan and put together an event like Alumni meet.
Ability to observe some special talents and working on them rather than focusing on the
weaknesses of the clients.
Learning various techniques of interventions like home visit.
Skills required to interact with other organization as the representative for our
organization.
Understanding how to maintain case files and how to have systematic record of clients.
